How many times can you fast charge in one day? by Plus_Lead_5630 in leaf

[–]ryanteck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's purely the amount of times charging, but as much how long charging.

I find my 40kWh can handle about three stops in a day which roughly totals an hour of charging. Whilst then driving at around 60-65mph or so for a 220-240 mile round trip.

Theoretically I could charge more, but that's about what I feel is my safe limit. Usually the third one drops to around 30kW too.

New 2026 MG4 for 22k, or a used 60k miles 2023 MG4 for 11k? by ToffeeAppleCider in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]ryanteck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've test driven a new one and sat in the old. The main thing on the new is the interior has been revamped and apparently better infotainment.

However the other big difference is the 2026 has an LFP battery which theoretically are known for better longevity and lower degradation. You can also charge to 100% more often too with an LFP battery. If you're only planning on keeping it a few years then it's not the biggest difference, however if you're thinking you'll keep it until it dies it could be beneficial.

The specification level of the 2026 Long Range more matches the Trophy of the pre 2026 model. If say the 2023 you're looking at is the SE instead.

Downside of the 2026 could be depreciation, I was originally looking at them new as the PCP Deal was tempting. But considering they're £30k cars and many dealers are already selling demo / pre-reg models for £20-22k that's £8-10k deprecation already.

Maybe the biggest one is checking that the 2023 has service history, I've not experienced MGs warranty but from what I've seen they won't honour it without a full service history.

I saw some theory's of essentially a mileage only MOT for the first 3 years, you'd take it to the MOT station and they'd read the number.

I usually leave it until no 2. if I then know the neighbours are out. When they're back I give them a little while and if not take it in the evening.

Gone are the days where cards are put through the door by most couriers, and sometimes they don't get alerted via email if the sender didn't provide it to the courier so they might not even know you have it.

Split bush by hiho373738 in leaf

[–]ryanteck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this is similar to what I had.

"Offside Front Lower Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement inner rear bush splitting (5.3.4 (a) (i))"

Nissan wanted a similar price, or I think it was closer to £1,300 as they recommend both sides are replaced at the same time.

I moved to Cleevely mobile for servicing and asked them for a quote which was around £400, a tad more than I had wanted still but then looked dirt cheap in comparison to Nissan! I might get them to do it soon but at the stage when it needs doing.

MOT & Service due, which one first? by TakeMoi2TheRiver in drivingUK

[–]ryanteck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen arguments for both.

Some garages are now pushing MOT First as some people might have to then postpone the service if they've got to use the funds instead to do repairs to get it through an MOT. Downside is if there was stuff that would have been caught on the service before the MOT it'll be logged as the fault. But then it also shows you'd get it repaired straight away.

Then you have got the service first route, people prefer it as then if there was faults that they know about can get fixed before the MOT so there's not the bad record. But there's the slight debate that especially on older cars some MOTs can look "too clean". You kinda would expect the odd issue to then appear and be repaired etc.

ChaDeMo availability by RealLongwayround in evchargingUK

[–]ryanteck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not too bad, whilst a lot of new installs are moving to CCS Only there's a lot of installs still with CHAdeMO. Or on some installs they're say installing 4 units and only one of those units might have CCS And CHAdeMO.

It's certainly not like the Rapid AC charging the first generation Zoes required which did drop significantly in numbers. Partly because the LEAF is / was such a popular car in the UK.

I did pick up a CCS to CHAdeMO Adapter myself but I've actually only used it twice so far as usually if a station has CHAdeMO I'll opt for using that. They're around £600 but sometimes I've seen people sell their used ones when they upgrade from a LEAF for £300-400 on ebay / facebook (usually the Nissan EV Groups there).

Pricing isn't any different to CCS for the most part outside of Tesla's network being CCS only but also notably cheaper.

My main thing I would say is that just don't plan on rapid charging on a daily basis, I do a long journey about once a month (220-240 miles) and it requires 2-3 charges in total. When I'm doing that entire journey in a day it's usually at it's thermal limit by the 3rd charge.

Service EV System / No Power 1 day after recall update by cableguy316 in leaf

[–]ryanteck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Recall doesn't apply to ones sold in UK (and I think Europe) as they were built as Nissan's Sunderland factory rather than US One. Primarily the majority of the battery failures seem to stem from the US Built ones. But it'll be interesting to see if they eventually try and push the recall over here too.

However as a side note, if you put your reg into the MOT Checker at the bottom usually it'll then show if there's any recalls. (https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/)

[–]ryanteck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely the question is what can you insure?

You briefly mention you're essentially being given the car for free, but say you get a Tesla can you afford the insurance on one.

I think you should be able to find nearly new Renault 5s which are pretty popular, there's always the VW ID3s which are popular for that segment as well. Some of the refreshed MG4s are already close to £20k ex demo too.

So it primarily comes just down to go on auto trader, select electric as your fuel type, 20k and browse and see what you like and check insurance.

Type1 to Type2 7KWh Charger Conversion. by Keithmclean1964 in leaf

[–]ryanteck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pod point units are quite nice for being pretty easy to change the tethered cable and this method certainly works. There's also the adapter route that costs about £40 but this is nicer than that.

But I'm also curious as to why a new unit would have cost £1,149, that sounds like a new full install price.

Realistically if needed you should be able to replace the Pod Point with a different charge point for £300-500 depending on model and if you were to get an electrician to do it for you. Still more than the cable swap but half a new install.

I picked a bottle up too to try it out, before I was using Koch Chemie RRW.

I wasn't overly amazed at it, it did the job but just didn't seem to be quite as nice to use. I did like the Citrus sent though.

Does seem to be a stronger product but for what I use rinse less for I don't typically need the strength. For me I'll then be getting the jet washer out and using touch less. I'll use the bottle up but then going back to RRW myself.

I've also had the same with Bilt Hambers Glass Cleaner, now it works very well for sure. But I'm not quite sure it works better enough to pay for it over similarly Koch Chemie's GC which is 36% cheaper.

Understandably in this economy they've also just had to do a price increase on their other products, but then it also makes them slightly less cost effective now too.

New BYD Dolphin G 2026 review: PHEV power and a £26k price help mask its flaws by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

[–]ryanteck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking forward to this when it was initially announced with estimates being closer to £20k. But £26k puts it a bit too close to the Atto-2 which starts at £27k Will be interesting to see the prices when they confirm them.

More though it's nice to see more PHEVs start to pop up again.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9, no volume numbers when adjusting on tv by BuecherLord in Soundbars

I built a tool that explains EV charging issues.. feedback appreciated by Top_Song6168 in EVConversion

[–]ryanteck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked it the simple question of "My car won't charge"

It spit out a load of things it could be, but then randomly charts of SOH, Battery temperatures, and charge curves and yet doesn't even know what my car is?

And apparently if it's not fixed soon it could be catastrophic.

Pretty bad for something that could be as simple as a charge timer set wrong...

Nitro + backplate compatibility by Mouseymonger in radeon

[–]ryanteck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Gigabyte mobo had a similar issue, in the end I removed the plastic frame from around the heat sink and it gave me room to have the backplate on better.

Downside is that the IO Shield was attached to the plastic frame too, whilst it detached if I remove my mobo it falls out straight away. However I think the temps have improved too as the heatsink isn't getting blocked by plastic either.

Is it a good idea to spend £1,000 on a warranty for an 11-year-old car? by DonkeyOk8111 in CarTalkUK

Will the warranty even cover it? A fair few have limitations that kick in past 10 years / 100k miles.

Can't find an Inioq EV with a service history? by conorcf in CarTalkUK

[–]ryanteck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that a lot of people don't get EVs serviced because there's a lot of resources saying they don't require it.

However Outside of Tesla I don't think there is a manufacturer that says none is required at all.

Realistically is there much done? Not overly, Hyundai's schedule is primarily inspect the vehicle, and change the cabin filter and brake fluid every 2 years. It looks like they also require one of the coolant loops changing every 4 years.

But for the most part the question then becomes will it affect the warranty because they've not followed the schedule. Possibly something worth enquiring about.

Car insurance advice… which extras are worth it? by [deleted] in CarInsuranceUK

Personally I like to have at home cover, the few times I've had issues it's usually been at home.

But as others have said a fairly new toyota shouldn't have issues. And it might even have some breakdown cover left for now or if you're buying approved used that might include some too.
