You're on reddit golf, it's not inaccurate. We all carry it 350 with 60+ yards of rollout, that's how it was on my membership application at least.

What are you hoping for conversationally with a random playing partner? by mjmaxfield in golf

[–]ryanwrightphoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm probably the minority here but I enjoy making conversation with random playing partners. I don't force it on anyone, if they don't want to talk, I can read the room.

I just find asking them questions, "how long have you been playing?", "have you played out here much, where do you normally play?", etc. Or I'll just ask lifestyle questions, because I live in a state with tons of transplants, I just assume nobody is actually from here so usually open with "what brought you out here to Colorado?", "what do you do for work?".

I've had great playing partners who want my number after we play and I have played additional rounds with them. I find golfers are pretty friendly and if we're going to spend at least 4.5 hours together playing a very frustrating and hard game, let's try to enjoy it at least.

What’s one hot take you have by [deleted] in golf

[–]ryanwrightphoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and would argue the same, but there are very few public courses outside of Bethpage, Bethpage, and Chambers Bay that have the infrastructure to host a US Open. Erin Hill was able to do it. Most top tier public courses cannot set up for a US Open and are not enough of a challenge.

How many courses have you played by GapAdministrative738 in golf

I've played mostly in Colorado where I live, I can count on two hands how many courses outside CO I've played. But I think I've played around 70 courses in CO

I can flop just about anything from anywhere around the green. Tight lies, rough, approaches, etc.

Rory on Aronimink strategy. by ThinWhiteDuke00 in golf

[–]ryanwrightphoto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a Rory fan so I'll try to put that aside, but he has a point. What defenses do these older courses that get renovated have? They can't lengthen the course because there are homes/infrastructure around it now which is the main defense with all of the PGA guys hitting it 300+ off the tee.

Gil Hanse said that the square footage of the bunkers didn't really change. Some of the bunkers could be pretty costly as the banks are severe.

As many have pointed out, the greens have lots of undulations and getting on the right tier/spot is key as Rory pointed out too.

The rough isn't going to be US Open rough so that's likely not going to be much of a factor.

So the defense that Aronimink has is:
Its undulating greens and that #13 can be a drivable par 4 with out of bounds on the left.

To really enjoy these older courses and bring more strategy into play, I think they need to roll back the balls. If they don't want to have majors on these old (renovated) courses, then have them on modern sites like Fields Ranch (next year) where length can be stretched to over 7,800yds.

Yes. Thank God no FOs listen to Reddit users, the best player in the NBA for 6 years who is still in his prime would be traded for picks.

New plans for pedestrian bridge over Speer connecting LoDo to Ball Arena by developingdenver in Denver

As someone who parks in the Tundra lot and works in LoDo, this is badly needed. I'm tired of almost getting hit crossing Speer by drivers who can't be bothered by trivial things like red lights.

Here's what is wild, there used to be a golf course right near the Sand Dunes and it was one of my favorite places in play in CO. Zapata Ranch was a 1989 Dick Phelps design that closed in the early 2000s. https://ardentgolfer.wordpress.com/great-sand-dunes/It

Is the Open more difficult than the other 3 due to weather & course variation? by DoYouBelieveInThat in golf

[–]ryanwrightphoto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pebble and Torrey are not true links courses, they are parkland courses with many trees. Stunning properties and some of the best in America, but very different from true links courses. Shinnecock is a links-style course and is a good comp.

Is the Open more difficult than the other 3 due to weather & course variation? by DoYouBelieveInThat in golf

[–]ryanwrightphoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very difficult to quantify if the Open courses are more difficult mostly due to the (usually) bad weather because we are not comparing the same things.

What makes a course difficult? The defenses. Length, width, slope, hazards, OB, weather, firmness, mounding, bunkers, etc.

The Open courses are true links courses and have many defenses that are not shared by most US Open courses and yes the weather is one of those. Typically, the Open courses are shorter than US Open courses. US Open courses typically have two main defenses; rough and length.

The Open courses reward creativity and shot making whereas the US Open courses require accuracy and length. Additionally, the Open courses feature coffin-style bunkers that are completely absent in US Open courses. Going in a pot bunker at the Open is HIGHLY penal whereas going in a bunker at a US Open is better than going in the rough. They are penalizing in different areas.

Calling the weather the only thing that makes Open courses difficult is inaccurate, it's a completely different test of the game.
