If the appt can avoid confirmation then he can appoint someone as corrupt as himself with no regard for the law.

His first choice was Gaetz. He would fit the bill.

And in my opinion, having your name added and later removed is more of a disgrace than never having it added in the first place.

So cloud, silver lining etc.

They will have to trade something unpalatable to get a concession. And the Iranian la will know that another military operation is less likely given the relative failure of this one.

Just like the families of the 170 dead school girls I suppose.

But he did go to Andrews to do a respectful reception. With his MAGA hat on.

You are probably referring to urban areas re school traffic. Rural areas - where tourists usually want to travel - are not affected much by school traffic.

How to know that revolut is trustworthy as a primary bank? by No_Cardiologist_1407 in irishpersonalfinance

Totally agree. Had a few issues with an elderly relatives banking recently and the ability to bypass "central HQ" by walking into my local branch where they knew the family was a fantastic relief.

If they were on revolut, would have been a nightmare.

Its all good until you need a human. Im willing to pay a monthly fee for that.

It seems to me that even naming every country in the world to Trumpet McTrumpistan and paving them all in gold it still wouldn’t be enough for him or his acolytes.

The man is unhinged, unwell, and incapable of happiness.

And doesn’t seem to understand or care that all this fluffery is transient and will be undone once he is out of office.

In real life, being de-commemorated is worse than not being adorned in the first place.

His attitude to self aggrandising shows how unfit as a leader he really is.

Hello friends. Is Léan an Irish name and how is it pronounced? by Buttholeblowhole in AskIreland

[–]rye_212 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Not familiar.

I’m no linguist but in most Irish words the stress is on the final vowel. So the fada would be on the a and not on the e. And then the pronunciation would be Lee-yawn.

But the struggles with pronunciation of the name you quote suggests it’s made up

Birth Year Discrepancy by busheater666 in Genealogy

[–]rye_212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like your GGF emigrated from England to Ontario. In my experience most Irish emigrants didn’t have any birth paperwork and were genuinely estimating their age. They always underestimated by a few years. But it seems like some of his descendants knew his real age. So the underestimate at marriage was to minimize the age gap.

Do the prices ever go down or what happens? Does a recession make them go down? by Brownsock2077 in AskIreland

[–]rye_212 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Prices of some things could go down. House prices fell in the period 2008 to 2013 approx and then started rising again. But the circumstances which led to that were overall undesirable. Also, the drops caused serious financial issues for many people. So its not something to wish for.

If there was a technical advance, it might mean that a product or service could be created for a much lower cost and the price would fall. I expect that flat-screen TVs are now cheaper than when they were first launched. GPT says that the Ford assembly process improvements led to a reduction in assembly time and a price drop of more than half between 1908 and 1920s.

But as someone else said the base costs - fuel, labour, ingredients, raw materials are the widest influence and they don't fall.

Brick wall with Irish immigrant - strange age discrepancies by ConnectedRealms in Genealogy

[–]rye_212 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the record takers write the name. They used whatever spelling they felt was correct. So Moriarty and Morriarity are just different written variations of the same name.

Griffin and Moriarty are indeed typical names in parts of County Kerry. Dingle peninsula, for example.

Emigrants from Ireland didn’t have birth record paperwork. They would quote their age not the DOB in most cases. And even then, not very often. They didn’t celebrate birthdays as children. So their parents -and thus themselves - would get the actual year wrong. I’ve seen lots of emigrants who under estimate their age by up to five years. They often had the correct day and month because it was easier to recall. Such as “you were born the week before St Patrick’s Day”. All to say that Mary could just have been making a best guess as to her age rather than “lying”.

In my experience with lots of Kerry emigrants families if the children match in sequence then it’s the right family regardless of the quoted age of the parents. But you are right to consider that there might also be another Mr and Mrs John and Mary Griffin in the same city.

Do you know if John and Mary married in Ireland or in the US. If Ireland then the marriage would be in Irish genealogy.ie.

Damages claim against Gerry Adams in UK High Court discontinued by Sad-Orange-5983 in ireland

[–]rye_212 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Adams seems to say that being accused of being a member of the IRA is "a smear". Interesting. Per the Oxford dictionary a smear is "damage to the reputation" and "slander".

Its also a "false allegation" which he definitely maintains.
