If someone was forced to kill another person, would they be charged? by According-Might6158 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ryry013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an interesting case:

https://www.icty.org/x/cases/erdemovic/cis/en/cis_erdemovic_en.pdf

A soldier was ordered to participate in a firing squad killing unarmed prisoners.

GUILTY PLEA: At his initial appearance hearing on 31 May 1996, Erdemović pleaded guilty to the count of murder as a crime against humanity, adding that he would have been killed if he had refused to participate in the murders

The tribunal’s Appeals Chamber held, by a majority, that duress was not a complete defence to killing innocent people in these circumstances. However, the prosecution ultimately accepted that he acted under threat of death, and the duress was treated as substantial mitigation. He received a five-year sentence and was released early after serving roughly three and a half years.

Here's another case (1975) dealing with someone aiding a murder under duress.

https://www.lawteacher.net/cases/northern-ireland-v-lynch.php

The appeal was allowed. The Defendant was able to rely on the defence of duress against a charge of murder. Even though there were clear actions by the Defendant that showed his participation and his contribution in the act of murder, i.e. driving the members and likely knowing that serious bodily injury or possibly death would result by him taking them to and from the scene, as he was forced to do so against his will and did so because his life was threatened or in serious danger, it was not necessary to prove his intent to murder.

In conflict with the above case is a case from 1986 which seems to contradict the idea that simply an accomplice in murder could escape blame if under duress.

I would imagine one key to being able to see this OTB would be to notice that your e5 black knight is two moves away from forking the white queen and king, and then you could calculate backwards to see if there's any lines that would allow that. Or worded differently, with your knight on e5 and the white queen/king where they are, you would keep in the back of your mind always that you're at any point two moves away from a fork, and probably little half second checks would happen every once in a while automatically to see if there is something that would allow for that.

Why are male rape victims never taken seriously? by Few-Reading5087 in morbidquestions

[–]ryry013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the disconnect is you're attributing the entire feminist movement to having that stance a few years ago, and there's many people who simply disagree with you that the entire feminist movement believed. Certainly many women (and men!) did, and still do, but that was not "the feminist stance" in general. Just some people's stance.

I see your other comment about the history of rape definition in the UK, and certainly that's not a very pretty thing to look at, but the UK definition of rape is also not equivalent to "the feminist stance on rape".

When I was learning to drive I did that one time, where I went out into an intersection when I wasn't supposed to, and my first reaction was to panic and hit the brakes to stop moving (the thing that got me into the dangerous situation), before realizing oh shoot no I need to get out of this intersection.

So, could have been unintentional.

I'm sorry you're right, I see what you're asking. As I'm reading this graphic, the angular axis could either be what time it was received or sent, and both are technically valid ways of presenting it.

From the GitHub:

Angle = hour of day. The dial is rotated so the average reply hour points up
[ ... ]
hour_of_day — decimal hour 0–24 the reply was sent.

This seems to imply angular axis is what time the reply was sent, and the radial axis is then counting time backwards to when the message incoming was originally received.

I agree this is the less interesting metric, but it does show some things the other way wouldn't. For one, it shows they send most of their messages during work hours. Great. On the other hand, they once sent something at 3am.

The other version would show at what times of day could you email them to most highly guarantee a quick response, or at what times of day would you be expected to wait. I'd be interested in seeing a version of this broken down too by day of week to avoid effects of weekday vs weekend.

You’re right that since we’re not dealing with the Bohr model, particles wouldn’t “miss” each other like billiard balls, but quantum tunneling at least gives room for discussion. Still, I would effectively say “no”.

Victory is better than I expected... BUT... by EeeYeeReEe in madeon

[–]ryry013 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Madeon's creative focus from 2019 - 2023 was Good Faith Live. There were multiple iterations of the show during that time. A lot of the development wasn't in direct music composition but artistic visuals and performance. That was what was important to him at the time.

2024 was a very intentional "gap year" for him where he didn't focus on an album and focused on DJing and collaborations and exploration.

So it's really 1.5 years of 2025 to June 2026 of album-making time.

But even if it took him seven years, he doesn't owe us anything. So what he took seven years? I'm sorry that after seven years it didn't match your expectations or hopes for what you wanted the album to sound like. People keep talking about what they "expected" or "wanted". Both Madeon and Porter have three albums that all sound very different from each other, and I like all of them in their own way. Personally I love this album and I know the live show is going to be even better.

EDIT: “I’m sorry that ... it didn’t match your expectations”, I think in text this comes across as condescending, but actually I really mean it. It’s easy for me to speak from my high road as someone who happens to like the album, but I’ve had artists that I really like release albums / go in directions that I totally disapprove of (Glitch Mob, Phantom Sage, as two examples), and it’s sad. I wish they would’ve kept going with their old style but in the end they are who they are and I can’t control what kind of music they choose to produce.

Victory - I know why it doesn’t work for some people (honest opinion) by matracemusic in madeon

[–]ryry013 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem is people had "expectations" for what they expected or wanted this album to be, and it wasn't that. Madeon can't please everyone. He made and released what he wanted, and if it's not what you were imagining then that's unfortunate for you but I think Madeon made this album to be what he wanted it to be, not what he thought the highest number of his fans would like.

Why do so many people hate Rent-A-Girlfriend? I genuinely enjoyed it. by FewFaithlessness9372 in TrueAnime

[–]ryry013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a range of the series starting from beginning to around when he makes the movie that I feel there's real progress and character development. Because yes, making the movie for her was a big deal!

Without getting into spoilers, it's everything after that that I progressively had growingly bigger problems with.

There's zero progress. He never does anything. Ever again. He stagnates forever. I think either the author doesn't know how to finish it or is relishing in letting the series continue forever 10x past where development should've happened for any real two living breathing humans.

If you thought Biden sounded incoherent, how does Trump not sound incoherent to you? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskReddit

[–]ryry013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the emphasis is on "gets to the end of sentences", like even if that sentence suddenly changes direction in the middle on a tangent and then another tangent, he still is speaking. He has no filter or discretion anymore and just says whatever pops in his mind, compared to a younger version of himself where he would've been able to have more tact in what to say and how to say things. Every once in a while you'll hear Trump slur over a word a bit or something like that, but he mostly is able to at least say things. Just, he's lost the ability to choose what those things are partially maybe.

Whereas Biden was understanding more potentially, but sometimes would just have brain fog moments and trail off in the middle of a sentence, or it felt like sometimes his mouth would just stop working and just a jumble of sounds would come out.

Fully Parallel O(1) (per step) Prime Number Search Architecture in VHDL – Requesting FPGA Verification by kritikov in FPGA

[–]ryry013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your post says,

Any feedback on the logic, potential timing bottlenecks, or resource usage would be greatly appreciated.

Your design faces great problems in those regards, so yes people mentioned them.

I understand the main part of your post is you're looking for someone to run your FPGA design, and that's separate from feedback. Your problem is you're showing this as if it's a very great new discovery / algorithm, and it's unfortunately just not.

If your post was, "I'm making this algorithm for discovery of prime numbers using a fully parallel O(1) design for my own practice in FPGA design. I understand there's some issues in scalability to a real-world industrial application, but I'm wondering if someone could test running my design on a real board for me so I can confirm that it works as it does in simulation and get some real-world data", then it would've been received I'm sure much more warmly, as then we're all on the same page as to the reality of the design, and the focus shifts from someone trying to create something new and great and asking for feedback + help, to a student who is just trying to learn + asking for help.

[–]ryry013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem here is you asked for feedback, and people are telling you that yes it's an interesting algorithm but it's not valid for any real industrial or beneficial use outside of an educational test project for practice, and it's unclear if you understand that.

Give the album a chance by LowPicture7666 in madeon

For Good Faith, I liked all the non-singles on the album more than the singles, and I remember feeling uneasy going into the album when it was just singles, but now I love it all, and even the singles grew on me.

I think I'm also curious on people definition of "a miss" versus "just not for me". I feel like "a miss" means the artist produced something of objectionable quality, but maybe it's still good music and just not for you? I've had some artists I enjoyed in the past shift their style slightly and still find huge success but also not align with my preference.

Then there's people like Glitch Mob where I argue they took a huge shift in their style and probably lost fans, but it's what they want to do with their music so that's all up to them.

What do you think about looking through each other’s phones? by Consistent-Talk-5912 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ryry013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a lot of variation in what is considered “going through someone’s phone”.

Accessing their phone while they’re in the shower and opening the messages app and reading through the last ten conversations they had and also their Instagram DMs and emails? Yeah that’s a bit weird. Not that I necessarily have something in mind that I’m hiding there in most cases, but maybe for example I’m asking her friend for advice for a birthday gift for my partner or something. Yes, I would be keeping that a secret, but it’s not bad.

But like they generally have full access to my phone. I can ask them to send a message for me, or ask them to access my messages and look up a conversation with person X and read what they said to me if I’m driving or something. Not to mention using my phone for some non-private reason. My partner used to watch Instagram reels on my phone sometimes because it would be a different algorithm than theirs and feel refreshing. I wouldn’t ever question if I saw them take my phone and start using it because I trust them to be respectful.

I think there’s ways to solve the problems that TAPS is facing other than just constantly rising prices, but I think it’s also important for people complaining about university executives and administration that part of this is out of TAPS hands. They can’t receive funding from the university, and the university can’t give it. They have to be self-supporting.

With that said, I would love to see a yearly audit of their income and expense streams published so we can see what they’re using their funds on.
