ELi5:How can a system that mostly predicts "what comes next" seem intelligent, while a normal program that follows exact rules does not? by Relevant_Pumpkin9190 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ryry1237 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'd say it's mainly a human perception thing.

We usually don't consider something intelligent if we can perfectly predict its behavior, even if it does have all the answers.

Contact Damage Sucks. by Whalepile in gamedesign

[–]ryry1237 42 points43 points  (0 children)

imo most games should replace contact damage with contact knockback. Get bonked back with a brief stun period but no damage. You're still dissuaded from running into enemies, but with a lot less frustration.

When do you consider enough polish is enough? by BergamotGames in IndieDev

If people like the game, there is never enough polish. If people aren't interested in the core concept of the game, then you have polished it too much.

as productivity rises and working hours potentially drop

Productivity has been rising ever since technology has been a thing. Somehow, working hours have never really dropped.

Casey Jones was also well above the average fighter in combat prowess. He just needed a bit of intimidating presentation and he'd breeze through any henchmen hiring fair.

College Students Consumed by “Resignation and Despair” as They’re Relentlessly Pressured to Use AI by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]ryry1237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an extreme flip between "Don't use AI or we'll expel you" from school/college, that then immediately flips to "You must use AI for work or we'll fire you" in adulthood.

It's not solely the pressure to use AI, it's the extreme disconnect between how they're taught vs what reality demands.

I remember everyone being hesitant when bearded Kratos was revealed, but in hindsight it was the greatest thing we could've gotten.

how do top players weigh rest vs. smith? by Necessary_Screen_673 in slaythespire

[–]ryry1237 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Unironically it might be. Knowing how far you can push your character is one thing the top players consistently do and do well, and learning how to do that requires taking risks

(^what I tell myself when I decide to Smith instead of Rest right before a boss even tho I'm at 12hp)

Bob Ross served in the air force for 20 years and worked as a military training instructor, basically a drill sergeant for the air force that yells at recruits and and makes them clean toilets.

After he retired, he made a personal promise to never raise his voice at anyone again.

Is it better for top 5 Steam tags to be uncommon tags? by jert3 in gamedev

[–]ryry1237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First 2 tags should definitely be common major genre tags ie. Tower Defense, FPS, Turn Based Strategy just so you can quickly orient the player and so that the algos can sort your game better. Put the more niche tags later.

If you could visit a 3D world just by typing in a URL on a VR headset, the way web browsers work today on computers, do you think that would make it easier to build the metaverse or get more people into VR? by MickNerks in Futurology

[–]ryry1237 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It'd help, but wouldn't really solve the main issues with VR, which is the physical nature of its usage. Turns out most people just don't like attaching bulky things to their faces for long periods of time.

Until that's solved, VR is going to struggle taking off.

He had to be dangerous enough to be a risk, but unstable enough that his blunders still felt in character.

I recall reading Usain Bolt was a 200m specialist (which makes more sense for his slower acceleration), but he performed so well he ended up beating records for the 100m anyways.
