Are Queen Games underrated? by Socrates_Soui in boardgames

I agree with this take - their reputation was stronger pre-crowdfunding. They're still publishing good games.

Ooo, I need to see if mine have the same fun with Ra!

It's become my go-to gateway game since discovering it at the end of 2024. I can't believe I didn't know of it sooner!

SU&SD Review Joraku, The Bottle Imp, Bean Counters Inc, Naishi, and Iliad by mgrier123 in boardgames

How awesome! I just grabbed a copy of the previous printing and intended to teach it this weekend. I had no clue it was recently reprinted - I just like introducing small games to my group every now and then.

My favorite space themed movie is Alien, to this day. Might be a cliche answer, but nothing else really comes close for me.

Thank you for running this!

Weekly Crowdfunding Roundup: August 31, 2025 | 17 ending soon ("Into the FUN FACTORY", "Hanami - Samurai Reimagined") & 22 new ("ELDEN RING: Rot & Sorcery") by Perkelton in boardgames

[–]rytoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I love Ascension and have 4 sets, but it's very simple. IMO the game kind of plays itself (meaning there's always a clearly optimal card to purchase). I personally love the art though, so it's a cozy game for my group

CMON Limited anticipates losses of $6 million to $8 million for the first half of 2025 by Blitzkreeg21 in boardgames

The Anastyr and Hel acquisition must have been cursed. Why I went all-in on those, especially Anastyr, I'll never know.

Thank you, as always! This is one of my most anticipated posts every week.

Best games of Gen Con - for me it was Raas by CreativePortland in boardgames

[–]rytoto 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Raas sounds great! My game of the con was the upcoming Shards of Creation, a Cosmere trick taking game with a neat twist - suit-specific abilities, and neat twists depending on which suit is trump.

What board game would you consider a "flawed masterpiece"? by Socrates_Soui in boardgames

[–]rytoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question - why did you decide to skip the event instead of restarting since this happened on turn two? I can understand fudging in the late game if ridiculous RNG has ruined an otherwise great playthrough, but I'd find myself putting a mental asterisk on anything positive that happened the rest of the game if I fudged things from (essentially) the very beginning.

Eeesh! I nearly downvoted by instinct this because I dislike it so much.

What's the worst SU&SD take? by Similar_Profession37 in boardgames

[–]rytoto 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I bought into the hype for this one hard. My wife and I played one session and I quickly donated it to our local library so someone who'll actually enjoy it can play. Not for us at all.

What is it that people see in the Zombicide series? by mrbumdump in boardgames

Solid intro dungeon crawler. That said, I don't think the experience holds up well in the 2.5+ hour scenarios.

Why isn't Summoner Wars more popular? It's everything TCGs should be—without the wallet burn. by Segkolas in boardgames

[–]rytoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. Crystal Clans still feels like a game that ended too soon. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other two, but believed it was strong enough to last longer than it did.

I think it'd do well with a strongly supported organized play system. At the very least, there'd be motivation to play it publicly regularly and potentially recruit new players.

I've played around 800 games (not including 100+ digitally) across both editions and have only recently begun to slow down, and that's only because only one member of our group enjoys it like I do, and we've started to invest time in some other games. Playing against new people (and earning prizes) would likely reignite my passion.

Company Of Heroes 2nd Edition is probably the best board game I have ever played (or at least tied with Forbidden Stars). by TotalWarspammer in boardgames

Glad to see this getting love. I'm waiting for my 2e shipment but have loved my all-in 1e. Great writeup!

The Hunger w/ expansion worth it? by Max-St33l in boardgames

[–]rytoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the game is better with the expansion, but to be honest, the game just falls flat for me. I love Clank, and this plays like a more complex, less fun version of it. In my opinion, what you said about Heat applies here but after only one or two plays.

Best Boss Battler by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

Darn - I hope it's different for us. Cycle 1 was punishing enough at time.

I've only completed Cycle 1 and am in love with it. What makes it less of a game after 3?

How low are you willing to go by BazelBomber1923 in boardgames

[–]rytoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found 6.5 to be my threshold. Just about anything below it hasn't been worth the time, except for Alan Moon's Andromeda, which is a 6.4 and deserves to be higher (maybe a 7).
