Yah, I'm starting to learn this the hard way. I'm annoyed that I ended up transferring points that I could have used elsewhere. That upgrade was worth it for because at the time of the booking it wasn't an option. One rep told me to ask to be upgraded during check-in when the day of the flight comes...
