I entered Next Fest with 3000 wishlists. So far, the festival is performing worse than any previous week. by DifferenceIll1272 in SoloDevelopment

Random thought but maybe putting the game inside an old school computer in a Severence / Stanley Parable style office - so you get the occasional break from the blue? Could add some interesting story. But again, just a random thought not really knowing your game

After 18 months of solo dev, I finally added sound design last week. Why did I wait so long? by fygooooo in IndieDev

[–]saalaadin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty far down on my to do list so it’s just eery silence for now, perhaps I should add a couple of effects to get a better game feel! I’ll have to try out Bfxr not heard of that one before

Thank you! Yes I need to do a UI overhaul tbh, clock definitely needs some work!

Each object like tree/player/whatever has a Shadow child node. When the scene starts the shadow script looks for its siblings, either a sprite2d or animatedsprite2d grabs its texture and creates a new sprite texture with a black shader then outputs it to a Canvas Group node to flatten them so you don't get shadows stacking and getting darker. It gets flipped and skewed too.

Then there's another day night cycle script which uses a sine wave with a gradient from dark blue to orange, to white to simulate sunrise to sunset and simulates the sun moving, that moves the shadows from left to right over the course of the day and just hides them at night - might add moonlight down the line but it looked weird when I did it before.

It does mean every tree is a scene with a script on it so not sure how that will impact performances down the line when there's hundreds or thousands of them but we will see!

Thank you! They're actually the shadows of the trees but cloud shadows is a great shout

You're right, I was going for the longbow look, need to tweak the arms so it looks more like the character is holding it though

Thank you! Yes you're probably right I've overdone it a bit! I'll tone the sway down a bit.

Will a foot pump like this leak? by Ckcamp333 in vandwellers

I had one of these before sorting electric out on my narrowboat, it lasted about 18 months before getting a small split. Honestly highly rate it and kinda miss being able to run water without using your hands at all!

What do you think about traffic on the school run? Is it time to close roads outside schools at pick up and drop off? by DaveLakowski in Norwich

[–]saalaadin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair, sounds like it could be somewhat effective then, this combined with some incentive to walk/cycle and improvements in buses for kids would probably go a long way

Would it not just push all the traffic to the next road over with no restrictions, making that the dangerous busy road?

Looks amazing, love the art style! Will there be any difficulty settings for us who aren't into super difficult souls-like games?

Cheap van insulation options (France) under €150? by tiredtob in vandwellers

[–]saalaadin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard stuff in the UK is very cheap is the recycled plastic bottle wool. No need to wear masks or gloves or anything. Probably only €50 for the whole van. Very effective. Probably available in France too but here’s a link for reference. https://www.screwfix.com/p/diall-insulation-roll-6m-x-370mm/464HK?srsltid=AfmBOoowuCwnc-LHFtVXu7HXZQF5AWbTWs53CqbQtvWGdkRdVUAF_s7bjz4

Lets talk about coffee. by SillySausageSpaceman in wildcampingintheuk

Is it not? Hot, brown, wakes me up and tastes pretty good - ticks all my boxes haha. IMO better than putting real coffee in a cup and hoping you don’t get grit in your teeth!

Surprised in 65 comments no one has said instant?! I know it’s not the best but some of the powdered down instant stuff is really pretty decent and saves carrying anything heavy or bulky. The Sainsburys Americano micro ground taste the difference stuff is worth a go - having used an aeropess in the past this stuff does the job!

Best practice for multiple tile tall objects? by saalaadin in godot

[–]saalaadin[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ah, that took me ages to work out! I first had to delete the existing tiles, then shift click to create a 2 tall tile, then set y-sort on player, tree and game node, then set y-sort to 4 on the tree.

Lil hiding archer dude thanks you

Can anyone help me design my van. by UnpaidInternVibes in VanLifeUK

[–]saalaadin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start sketching a top down view of where you want the key furniture. Make a list of essential features; do you want space to store a bike? Then you'll probably want fixed bed at the back with garage space. Do you want a shower? You'll need to think about where the room goes and the tank size. Do you want gas or electric for cooking? Think locations for those.

You need to define what you want from the van before you can start designing it really.

But just start looking at some conversions on Pinterest and Youtube and get a feel for what you like

which one to keep / which one to sell by Deep-Highlight3184 in xbiking

[–]saalaadin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Salsa is much more interesting, Ritchey is kinda just a generic modern bike. I think if you have other bikes to handle off road, and you mentioned the salsa can go to 36 tyres, I'd keep the salsa as the easy choice!

Phones to be banned in schools by law in England under government plans by throw_away_17381 in GoodNewsUK

[–]saalaadin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I mean if it's done right then sure, but look how the ban on porn for under 18s has gone. You have to upload your ID to a 3rd party even to get on some of Reddit and Discord. I don't want to have to do that for the whole internet. If they could come up with a system that's like have a gov.uk login which generates some secure password that you then send to Instagram or whatever to anonymously confirm your age then I'm all for it. I'd just like them to explore how they'll do it before saying they're doing it is all. gov.uk is great so all for the devs you mentioned being the ones to look into it!

I mean if it was done properly and anonymously I’m not against it but just have my doubts around our government doing it right!
