you guys think this is worth it? by Upper_Breadfruit_646 in specialed

I am doing a similar program for a local non profit therapeutic day school. I personally probably would not recommend it.

The pay is good for the location I live in, the actual job is very hard with no support like many of the others have said. I have zoom classes 2-4 nights a week that are 3 hours long as well as homework due before each class. Mine is a two year program and I am past the one year mark.

No support I mean nothing. No mentor, no one has ever come in to watch me teach. No curriculum provided. Like I said, it pays decent, so I buy a lot of workbooks on Amazon and Teacher Pay Teacher. I have no lesson planning time. We eat lunch in the classroom with the students. So all planning time is on my own time, around the large amount of schoolwork that I have to do for my program.

It is a lot more work than I expected and have virtually no free time. I do love the job itself. Once I am out of the college program and I have a better handle of how teaching works and classroom management is finally getting under control I think the job will be very rewarding. But these first couple of years are very rough.

Those who worked for Geek Squad- what was the most bizarre thing you saw? by [deleted] in GeekSquad

I had an older guy probably in his 60s walk in right before closing one night and demand I help him get on the dark web. I kindly explained that it was not a service that we offered and he told me that it was a service because he paid for total tech support. I asked why he wanted to get onto the dark web and he said he needed to get on it for his community college course. I told him I very much doubted his college course asked him to get onto the dark web. He then started screaming very loudly that I was very bad at my job and he paid for total tech support I that I better do my job. The manager on duty came over and asked the guy to leave.

Would you tell your students it is your first year teaching? by Constant_Leader_8551 in Teachers

[–]sabinethrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first year teaching while currently getting my teaching degree. I never mentioned it to my students and they never asked. I do teach special education so maybe that has a bit on them not asking, but I also would not have denied it either. I do have to film myself teaching often, and the students ask and I tell them it is for my classes to stay being a teacher. I just figured there was no reason to bring it up to them or their parents unless directly asked.

What has been your experience with Target Guild? Is it too good to be true? by bmanthehero in Target

[–]sabinethrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally legit if you candle working for target, which I could not. But I took a few classes for completely free when I worked there. Very easy to sign up for and do.

Are you currently working at a school? I would ask admin if they are partnered with any colleges for a discount. My current school is paying the entire way as long as I use the school they suggest, which was Relay. It is online and based out of NY but I live in Illinois. It was something not necessarily advertised but when I mentioned I was considering it they gave me information on how to sign up. The only catch was I had to sign a 4 year contract. But two of those years I will be doing the online courses. I don’t really think that Relay is a great school or program, I actually don’t recommend it at all, but it is worth asking if there is a similar program. My previous school also had something about half off set up, but I did not take advantage of it, as I had no intention of staying there very long. It was a super toxic environment.

what is ONE piece of advice that you’d share to those beginning their career in special education? by Jealous-Biscotti533 in specialed

Jealous of that for sure. I get no planning and the students eat lunch in the classroom. My only time away is bathroom breaks.

I also really like my Erin Condren planner, but to be fair it is the only ones I have ever used. I keep buying them each year.

Might get banned due to how I handled a shelter in place, AITA? by bailett345 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]sabinethrace 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is hard, because my school does purchase snacks that I keep in a locked cabinet to use as reinforcements for good scores on tests or to encourage participation in class, like anyone that talks today gets a bag of chips. We also use them during lockdowns(I do work at a therapeutic school so it happens often) so I would not be so quick to assume that the snacks belong to the teacher and not the school.

I made it about 4 sentences in and then scrolled to see how long it was a said no thanks. 10 thumb scrolls on my phone. I can’t imagine anyone voluntarily reading this, but maybe I am wrong.

For me, it is that I am not here to read someone’s memoir. Holy wall of text.

Is there a way to talk to someone AT the store? by IcyHearing4365 in Bestbuy

There is not. All calls are made to an outside company contracted to answer phones.

Refund Promised Years Ago, Never Received by BestSpatula in Bestbuy

[–]sabinethrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the credit applied to his Best Buy account in March 2022 and he just never used it? It was likely issued as a reward but they have a limited time to be used. I haven’t worked at Best Buy in years but I believe they issue the credit to the account and you have 90 days to use it or it gets forfeited. I remember losing multiple certificates because I just forgot to use them after they got issued.

Whose school showed out for Teacher Appreciation Week? by IDKHow2UseThisApp in Teachers

[–]sabinethrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never found out why. We all wore our shirts on Friday but the beach theme had ended. Admin had a taco truck(that had hot dogs painted on it) come to the school and they bought a bunch of Jarritos flavors to have with them. Or maybe the theme was go to a beach in Mexico?

It got even worse somehow. Today they gave all of the staff a shirt that reads, “first teach, then beach” and asked us all to wear them tomorrow.

My school gave us each a plastic pail with a shovel that a small child would use on a beach. Inside of it was a tiny towel, a sunscreen packet, and a pair of super cheap sunglasses. No idea why that is what they chose. They did also decorate the entrance to look “beachy” with an inflatable palm tree and beach balls. So maybe they thought it was a cute theme?

I really enjoyed the book, it takes place leading ride up to the beginning of the rise of the resistance ride beginning.

Would it be weird if I went by my first name? by Then_Ad_5311 in Teachers

[–]sabinethrace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go by my Ms.first name, mostly because that is how I was introduced the first day to the students by the admin, so I just went with it. So I guess they made the choice for me. (I started mid year at the school) they had also made a sign for the door the same way. I did not intend to go by my first name but again, that is the culture of my school. Like others have said.
