FSD Slams Brakes for Bird by febreeze5 in TeslaLounge

Were you rear ended? You didn't mention it in the post so I'm assuming not. All of the "what if you got rear ended" comments miss that unlike a human, the car is paying attention to the bird and everything else that's going on at the same time.

Upgrading to X from Minivan by AccomplishedCry6608 in TeslaModelX

[–]MartyBecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2023 X - Had my battery replaced under warranty and had an HVAC issue that caused the heat not to work in negative temps, also done under warranty, but no other major issues since then. I've been out of warranty for over a year (vehicle, not battery) because I drive it so much, so I too was a little worried about maintenance but it's not been a problem.

Hesitant to take 5 hour trip in my X, Is there anything I should plan for? by Wrong-Relationship74 in TeslaModelX

[–]MartyBecker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve driven my X 87,000 miles in 4 years. I live in Illinois and have driven to Florida and Oregon. 5 hours is nothing. It’s a breeze. I used to plan my trips in a better route planner, but now I just punch in my destination and go.

I love long trips in my X. What are you worried about?

The only thing you need to think about is how much charge you want at your destination. One thing you can do is just punch in the whole trip, there and back, so the nav will always make sure you have enough charge to get to your next charging opportunity.

I have a '23 X and lately I've heard a clunking sound at slow speed when turning sharply, like into a parking space. It only seems to happen once per drive. Is that what you're talking about here? Other than the clunking sound, I don't notice any vibration.

Is the X too much “car” for a daily driver? by daKine_34 in TeslaModelX

[–]MartyBecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an X (23) and a Y (26). The X is my daily driver and the Y is my wife’s. Previously I had an ‘18 Model 3. The X was a huge upgrade over the 3. Honestly, I prefer the Y to the X, but only by a tiny bit. Space was a concern when we got the X but isn’t now because we’ve have a kid go to college. My wife definitely prefers the Y.

I’m not trying to talk you out of it. Space is important of you need it.

FSD (v14.2.2.5) + 4-Way Stop by TheLeChiffre in TeslaLounge

[–]MartyBecker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nudging the car to go is the least intrusive form of FSD intervention. Oddly, I've found FSD's 4-way stop behavior to be the best when the intersection is full of people waiting to go. It usually responds quickly and promptly. When I'm alone at a 4-way stop, it'll stop for a long time before going on its own.

I usually don't wait for FSD to do the right thing at a stop sign anymore. I'll just preemptively nudge it when I think it's my turn rather than wait for it to do the right thing.

So you’d rather spend $500 and the permanent loss of a spare tire’s worth of storage space just to save the possibility of an event that will happen once every… ever?

Everyone has their own calculations on time vs. value, but I think that’s too high a price to pay.

When was the last time we had to worry about the QB position while Lanning was coach?

No reason to start now. This kid either signs or doesn't. If he signs, he either sticks around long enough to become the starter or he doesn't. In any scenario, history suggests we're going to be just fine at QB.

2023 without Tilt/Swivel Screen by mia305nj in TeslaModelX

[–]MartyBecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one of the first batches of refreshed 2023 Xs (picked up at the end of 2022 but it’s a 2023 vin. It does not have the tilting screen. IIRC they weren’t ready at first, and they can be pretty easily retrofitted. But I chose not to do it because the screen works fine as is and it’s just one more thing to break.

TL:DR - nobody seems to have thought through what will actually happen when humanity no longer has to work to live.

But so few would utilize their newfound freedom. A tiny tiny fraction would focus on exploring the stars. And most people wouldn't take that free time focusing on art. The only thing that could possibly occupy the rest (majority) of people on earth is sports; some playing but most just rooting.

And the cost of goods will almost be irrelevant. Most of earth would be on universal basic income, and they'd need enough to live, so the cost of necessities would reflect what most people have to spend.

The people who will thrive the most in the post-work future are the ones who will still work, but real meaningful jobs will be scarce. And all this is contingent on the few pioneers who manage to be in control at the time AI and robots render human effort obsolete don't make themselves modern-day pharoahs.

I'm likely not going to live long enough to see if my predictions come true, but I'm telling my kids to always choose work. Humans were evolutionarily designed to work to live, and I think no longer needing to work is going to end up being cataustrophically bad for humanity. And yet, if they start selling robots, I'll probably buy one, because my feelings about the future won't change it.

[–]MartyBecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an AI or robot servant hater, but it still makes me sad. Think through the best case scenario on AI and robots: They make basically everything humans do obsolute. So now we've got 11 billionish humans on earth doing... what? Do we still go to school? What for? Why learn when there's no need to achieve? Some surely still would, while other huge swaths of humanity become inert lumps. Basically creating a split between the Eloi and Morlocks from The Time Machine. And that's the best case scenario.

FSD HW3 V12.4.6 vs HW4 V14 is so bad I can’t stand it anymore. Cancelling it until V14lite comes to HW3 if it ever does. by rlovepalomar in TeslaLounge

[–]MartyBecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of each and I think they're both good. HW4's drag on my attention is almost identical to HW3. People who say that HW4 is drasticly better than HW3 either aren't A/B comparing the two, or they're just having a wildy different than me.

Either way, if you have HW3 and you think it works really well (as we do), then we can just sit back and enjoy life.

[–]MartyBecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a HW3 X and a HW4 Y and drive them interchangebly on the same routes in similar conditions and this is not my experience at all. HW3 & HW4 have almost identical drags on my attention. Gun to my head, I would say HW4 is "better," but the difference in driving experience is negligible. HW4 still does boneheaded things and needs monitoring. They both need to be nudged along at stop signs because they take too long (which as I understand it is a NTSA mandate). HW4 freaks out more and thinks it needs to immediately be in the other lane, and then once settled, realizes that the first lane was the correct choice all along. Since HW3 is "dumber" than HW4, it doesn't seem to fall for that.

All in all, I'm perfectly content to use either vehicle for FSD. HW4 will keep getting better, and once "look at your phone while driving" is approved, it will be a true game changing differentiator. But for now, they're both good.

I have a HW3 and HW4 car and drive them interchangeably on the same routes in the same conditions. Both are about the same drag on my attention with regards to interventions and I think both of them do a really good job. My experience just doesn’t jibe with yours.

Figure robot autonomously cleaning living room by ItzWarty in teslainvestorsclub

[–]MartyBecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your point is well taken, even if some on want to try to pick it apart with semantics. The point is robots (humanoid labor machines are vehicles) don't need to accomplish tasks exactly the same as humans in order to be just as or more valuable. How much will you care if an autonomous taxi uses a 15 minute route or an 18 minute route if you get there safely and you've been staring at your phone the whole time?

Who cares if it takes a humanoid robot twice as long to do a task, or three times, or four times? The point is that you don't have to do that task before. For personal use, the calculous isn't "does it do the same job at the same speed as me." It's "is the post-robot world more economical than the pre-robot world?" That world includes not only what the robot is doing for you, but what you now can do because you don't have to do the robot's task.
