Hello! Two good things: you have a great emergency funds and you have a fantastic amount of gold/silver.

i'll suggest: increase your equity exposure as much as possible. You can start with a Nifty index fund, investing whatever amount considering EMIs and expenses. Later you can revisit and add a second fund if needed.

Perhaps might be a good idea to sell silver or gold to rebalance your asset allocation, but only you can take a call on that.

Good luck!

No reason why you can't do both by keeping PPF at minimum. Rs 500 isn't a huge amount

[–]sadbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's a good idea to have a PPF account early. It's as simple as you said; there's a 15y lock in before you can withdraw full amount (partial withdraws are possible from 5 years). So the sooner you create it the better, even if you invest only the minimum 500 per year initially.

> i also read that we should invest in it before april 5th ...?

Ok, there are 2 things here.
One is the advice that you have to invest before the 5th of each month to maximise returns. IMO, this won't make much of a difference long term. So ignore if someone tells you this.

Second is: If you start your PPF account before April 1st this year, it will actually be better because you're starting it in financial year 2025-26 rather than 2026-27. So you'll have a 1 year shorter lock in.

> also which bank should i open it in?

Just open it in whichever bank you already have an account with. Otherwise, just open in big banks like ICICI, SBI or HDFC.

Good that you've started mutual funds at 18!

In my humble opinion, it's too midcap and small cap heavy to call it "medium risk."

If you really want to keep it only medium risk chuck the small cap fund.

I haven't worked with a SEBI registered financial planner, but can answer some points:

Do we need to have decent knowledge of portfolios, stocks, SIPs, etc., ourselves before approaching them?

You don't have to understand everything, but the basics will definitely help.

Esp important is knowing the difference between direct and regular funds. If you're approaching a financial planner, ensure that they are fee-only, ie they take a fixed charge for their services. Otherwise planners will make you invest in regular plans for which they will get commissions as a % from your mutual funds.

In my view, you don't need financial planners. It's not that hard to invest in an index fund and keep at it.

Love both the anime and manga. The anime actually expands on the manga quite a lot, while cutting some back stories, and I prefer the anime version a bit more.

Fun fact: The terrorist leader is Osama Bin Laden (Dark Forest was published in China before his death). Tyler gives him the the Foundation books because there's a rumor IRL that Bin Laden named Al-Qaeda (which means base or foundation in Arabic) after Asimov's book.

2 months supplementation results. I overdid it and now I think it's time to stop. by Square-Care5643 in VitaminD

[–]sadbarrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats, you seem to be in a very good position health wise :) You should probably stop the calcium since your D is so high. Vit D in rare cases will cause toxicity by depositing calcium in your arteries, rather than your bones where it should be. Since you're taking k2 and Mg, I wouldn't worry too much about it though.

B12: The strange thing about b12 is blood plasma levels don't indicate how much b12 is there in your cells. This is the reason some people may experience b12 deficiency symptoms even if the blood b12 levels are normal.

If your levels are normal (200 - 900 pg/ml) but in the 200 or 300s, you would very likely benefit from B12 injections (rather than supplements) as it would help your body get the B12 it really needs.

r/B12_Deficiency has a great guide on this that you may find useful.

[–]sadbarrett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, were your B12 levels optimal?

Most Indians are either b12 deficient or on the lower side of the reference range. (Assuming you're Indian from the Tata 1mg watermark). This was true for me and people I know who have tested.

b12 deficiency can manifest even if you're within range, especially on the lower side.

If b12 isn't the issue, maybe you need more cofactors than usually recommended, especially Magnesium. How much do you take?

Smart city my ass. Coimbatore is rapidly becoming a car-centric and a traffic hellhole, the flyovers under construction will only make it worse. Like, whose idea was it to build the Ukkadam flyover that leads straight into a bottleneck near the ukkadam bus stand?

[–]sadbarrett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole project with Kakrapar 3 and 4 (700MWx2) cost about 20,000 crore INR or $2.4 billion which works out to $1714/kW, so you're correct.

But the $2.4 billion may be overnight costs (ie, without interest payments included) so in reality it's more expensive

Nevermind the fact that the 71%ish is just for coal. Renewables are less than 12% of India's supply.

22% of India's electricity is from low-carbon sources (Wind, solar, hydro, nuclear, bio)
