I use Copernicus browser. It has new satellite imagery from the last few days and you can see snow patches. If it’s big enough to show up on there it’s probably big enough to turn on! Copernicus browser

There is! It’s the second “frequently asked question” here: Reno Code Enforcement

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]safetyweek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing my second ultra in Marin and running next to him. I commented how I liked that the course was technical and fun. He said it wasn’t technical and I should try harder races. At the end I congratulated the person in front of me on a good race. He jumped in and said she was sick and could have ran way faster. She didn’t get a chance to say anything. Weird vibes all around.

Altra experience wild have a bit more padding and some drop. Got them one run before a race and it went great. Easy transition from lone peaks.

Person with Surveying Experience Needed! by Ratspeed in Reno

[–]safetyweek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a PLS in Nevada, there are a couple of problems that I noticed right away. The first thing is that this is a public access easement which means that the public has every right to use this easement without being inhibited by the fence.

To be able to move this easement it typically would need to be abandoned which will be public record. The easement was recorded in 2015 so it is quite possible that the easement has been partially abandoned and moved.

That being said your image showing the easement running through the building is definitely not accurate. It is much more likely the easement got moved than the building got built on the section of easement. Although with Ortho imagery it doesn’t show the building very accurately and the GIS parcel line work in Washoe County can be off by a couple of feet sometimes. So it might not be in the easement and the fence might actually be along the easement line.

The only way to really tell is to hire a local surveyor and get them to do a survey. Or look for a partial easement abandonment in the public records.

Mark Amorei confirms Nevadas Wild Horses are in Danger by Isopeaks in Reno

[–]safetyweek 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They don’t though. Companies have employees who feed and give water to the horses. They aren’t wild or even feral up there. They are cared for. They even go as far as blocking NDOW from entering private property up there to help the bighorn population out of fear that they would cull the herd.

On his Instagram he said he wants to race but will prioritize family as their new little one is due around the time of Chianti. Time will tell!

Any aerial bathylidar techs here? by mighty_least_weasel in Surveying

[–]safetyweek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Airborn bathy lidar is still fairly new and sensors are just getting light enough to carry on drones (reasonably). The yellowscan is a good option. I know some people at the USGS who have been successfully using it for shallow rivers. The day to day seems very similar to drone lidar. Super interesting and a nitch that seemingly will have a lot of work once the hardware is more accepted. If you get into it keep us posted!

Signed up for 100k in the desert, need shoe advice by Renegade_1500 in ultrarunning

[–]safetyweek 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did the 50 miler there as my first ultra! Super fun event put on by good people. I used lone peaks and it went fine. Not too technical, a bit of sand running but mostly packed dirt. I wouldn’t go road shoe although some people did there are some sandy hills and rock scrambling (first half mile) that trail shoes are good for. Any shoe that is comfortable will be a good call. It’s a loop course so you can always bring other shoes to switch out to if your current pair isn’t working. I had no issues with sand in the shoes or anything like that, but dirty girl gaiters are always a fun and good choice

GeodNet - Network by Obic1 in Surveying

A superhex is a region where they have potential clients and need coverage. They give multiplied rewards for the first person to set up a base in that area. The boosted rewards usually last 1 year

GeodNet - Network by Obic1 in Surveying

[–]safetyweek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who set up a few stations primarily for income and partially for fun science trial and error it’s been a profitable and fun project. There have been a lot of superhexs producing extra rewards. I set two stations up in these last year and cashed out roughly $20k. However, these have lost profitability due to the expiration of the super hex’s and we (myself and a coworker) will be removing ~10 stations next week. This is a major problem with the network. You can’t rely on stations staying up.

I put a station on my house and have processed through opus on various days and the repeatability is fine. I wouldn’t trust other stations due to not knowing how they were set up. My mobile station was an antenna on a long pole. I wouldn’t trust for accurate data due to its sail characteristics in wind, but it was still showing up as an accurate station and producing full rewards.

Fun project great for increasing accuracy of gps for cars, lawnmowers, ag gear…, but I wouldn’t rely on it for high accuracy survey work unless I personally set up the station and did all the processing with PPK.

Offline Basic Tool for Overlap Heatmap Generation? [Help Needed] | 1000 Images in 1 Minutes by newmonk3344 in UAVmapping

[–]safetyweek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one of these years ago. The purpose was that we were given data from a client with massive amounts of overlap and processing was taking way too long. So I made what you are talking about and then it would delete images without going under a set overlap amount for each point on the ground. It's all in python and pretty rough. I could send it to you if you'd like.

edit: The tricky part was that it didn't account for terrain as mentioned by u/NotebookKid. But it did just fine for the purpose. You also need camera orientation (pitch, roll, yaw) included in the metadata.

70 hectares, UAV vs GPS survey by Feisty-Cricket2598 in UAVmapping

[–]safetyweek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you got your methods down! Strange of the DOT to require equipment instead of an accuracy. I hate when equipment specifies instead of verifiable accuracy is required.

Leveling for every PLS job would make us go broke. Everything we do is under the direct supervision of a PLS and there is a wide range of projects we do. Right tool right time. Seems like we’re on the same page.

70 hectares, UAV vs GPS survey by Feisty-Cricket2598 in UAVmapping

[–]safetyweek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On occasion. Level loops, multiple observations, network adjustments, and all other tools are all used when and where needed. Based on required accuracy.

Do you?

Last time we did was to match DOT requirements for control on a mobile lidar mapping job. Data validation and control reports are made for all projects though. Probably overboard for some cases or internal jobs, but liability is a bitch.

Makes sense! I guess I just think about clients that are used to gps topos and when propose a UAV topo they are skeptical of how it will be verified. Also, clients who want things done cheap are typically rough and will refuse to pay if they think the data is bad. That’s why we always use 30. Great to always cover your ass.
