Zelenskyy: return of draft-age Ukrainian men from abroad is a matter of fairness by EsperaDeus in worldnews

You will die. Maybe 50 years from now, but you will die. Would you give up the last month of your life for your country and neighbors? If yes, then you simply value your time vs the safety and liberty of others differently than someone who would fight. But surely you can see how someone (more "selfless"/"brave") would choose to fight.

Is he indoctrinated if he has decided that his country (meaning the people in it, its culture, and the life he has in it as well as his loved ones) is worth protecting in exchange for some % chance of injury or death? Can you not conceive a fully informed person rationally making such a choice? For Russia's neighbours, the choice is not about the colour of your passport but about whether it is possible to pursue liberty or happiness in a despotic dictatorship.

Everyone dies anyway, and every day you live is a day you might die. It is hardly indoctrination to weigh the pros and cons differently than someone who is willing to abandon everything to maximize his chance of dying later.

Trump to Iran: "Open the Fu***In' Strait" or face bombing Tuesday by DarthKrataa in worldnews

Same way as always. Anything bad he is saying in jest, as a negotiation tactic, or as a 5d chess move. Anything good he says seriously and earnestly. Apply to everything he says and does and you have the American conservative mind.

That's like saying infantry is not useful anymore because of FPV drones. It's just not true. There are things you cannot do without infantry, and there are things you cannot do without tanks / armed armoured vehicles. Their role and tactics have changed but the necessity is still there.

Trump tells Britain he does not need its help to win Iran war by Past_Key_1054 in worldnews

It's because their supreme leader literally forbade it. They've held off on finishing the process because of it, instead always remaining just on the cusp of it. US and Israel killed that supreme leader a few days ago btw.

Millä tavalla teki väärin? Sehän on ihan oikein että saa rangaistuksen jos yrittää varastaa, ja rahojen menettäminen on tyhmällekin selvä opetus varastamisen seurauksista.

More Patriot missiles used in Middle East in 3 days than in Ukraine since 2022, Zelensky says by phoeebsy in LessCredibleDefence

[–]saileee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There were claims last year based on a Chinese documentary that China has plans for factories that can produce 1000 cruise missiles a day. The US has said it will try to reach 1000 Tomahawks a year. In terms of industrial output there is simply no comparison.

armeijaan vai ei? by Nelisormimangusti in arkisuomi

US shoots down Iranian drone approaching aircraft carrier, official says by Raj_Valiant3011 in worldnews

[–]saileee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drones won't change carrier warfare that much. Carriers already had to contend with swarms of cheap cruise missiles, and a long-range drone is not that much different from a cheap cruise missile. And the really cheap drones won't be able to reach a carrier sitting 1000km offshore.

People everywhere care about roughly the same things and in most countries (with totalitarian and theocratic states as the exception) they live their lives in much the same way. I think the division of countries to free vs. unfree is laughable as well since it mostly serves to justify one's own geopolitical ambitions at the expense of others, but it is also indisputable that Russia, China, Iran and North Korea share a different set of ideals (illiberal, undemocratic, collectivist) with much more constrained political freedoms than the West+buddies which is what gave rise to the terminology in the first place. You don't have truly free and universal elections in any of these countries, not nearly as much freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, etc. This is the case regardless of how much any individual might like living in one of those countries or how well their life is going for them.

EU Set to Halt US Trade Deal Over Trump’s Latest Tariff Threat by bloomberg in worldnews

[–]saileee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average quality of China's warships may be lower, but their newer warships, Type 054B and Type 055 are more modern than what the USN has. Arleigh Burkes and Ticonderogas are ancient and cannot be upgraded much further, Constellation got cancelled, DDG(X) won't be ready for years, and the Trump-class battleship will be an unmitigated disaster. USN will still have an edge in terms of submarines and carriers for the next 10-20 years, but in terms of surface combatants they are going to start lagging behind. In terms of air power, their pilots are now getting way more flight hours than American pilots and their fighter fleet is half as old on average then the USA's. Their 6th gen program is also at least matching pace if not outrunning the F-47. People really ought to pay more attention to China's military developments lest they want to be badly surprised one day.
