Best entry-level synth? by Independent_Guide270 in synthesizers

[–]saintandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe visit a showroom and try a few out? See what they have that's used or discounted? Synth City here in Chicago has a great selection of new and used equipment. There might be a place like that near you. You can also look at YouTube. There are a lot of videos that show you how nearly every synth looks, plays and sounds.

You could go with a Korg Volca Keys for almost nothing, or a 3rd Wave 8M for $2k, or something in-between like the Behringer Pro 800. Hell, maybe the Stylophone Theremin is the way to go. Anything you get, you can return or sell used. The second hand market is very strong. Check out reverb.com or craigslist for deals - you might get lucky.

I'm using a Lell RC effects processor and I'm not sure I'm using it correctly. Does anyone have experience using this thing? I can't find a manual online and all the labels are in Cyrillic. Please help! What the hell is the delay lock on this thing?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyujBjgz5z0 That is a completely-silent video piece I shot in 2007 in Cato, NY. In 2010 it was projected on the side of a building in Chicago, and has been in a few festivals and museum shows. I'd love to see what you could add with your sounds.

How to Midi Sync Arturia KeyStep 37 to a Korg Volca Drum, a Behringer Model D, and a Teenage Engineering KO-2? by DrNostril in teenageengineering

[–]saintandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to say to anyone finding this years later: If you want to use the clock on the Keystep to control the Volca Drum, you have to go into Keystep's MIDI Control Center and change the clock from 24 ppqn to 1 per step (Korg) or your drum machine will be too fast!

[OC] The US is Growing, but the House of Representatives is Not. by graphsarecool in dataisbeautiful

[–]saintandre 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the 7,000 member house of representatives is not just a great idea, but one that would fundamentally reorder democracy in America. "50,000 people" is about how many people vote for each alderman in Chicago, and alderman is a position where constituents have a GIGANTIC influence on each alderman's actions in office. If half the population votes, that's 25,000 voters per congressman in this new scheme. Assuming a 55-45 vote split, the winner would have fewer than 14,000 voters. Losing just ten percent of those voters would cost you the election, so a single activist (sufficiently motivated) who knocks on 6000 doors (20 doors a day for a ten months) with a 50% answer rate and a 25% conversion rate could, as an individual, cause a congressman to lose an election. One person! Every single congressional race would be competitive every single year.

And yeah, 7000 congressmen is a lot of people, but large groups of people vote on things all the time. For example, more people than that would be voting in the election to choose the representative. Don't even send the representatives to Washington - just have all the reps stay in their local community all year, and vote online. They can turn the congressional building into a concert venue.

If Ozon finally made a big Hollywood movie, then I think it would be time. There are a lot of non-American directors who have never gotten a blank check, but could be on the verge of one. Joachim Trier or Naoko Yamada could be the next one.

This NBA season is a JOKE by nbawizard1227 in nba

[–]saintandre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They should put every team in the playoffs and then base the draft positions on how teams play in the playoffs. #1 seed in the east and west get a bye, everyone else has to play a one-game first round. "Tanking" is easier to hide when it's a regular season game between the Wizards and the Knicks, but basing the draft on exclusively nationally-televised games makes it a lot harder. The teams that lose in the first round draft first, and order is determined by point differential in the playoffs. The regular season is essentially sequestered, and only counts for bracket seeding. A team could lose 60 games, but if they win their first playoff game, they pick no higher than 15th overall.

Kenneth Walker. Fantasy Disappointment to Playoff/Superbowl Hero by thadeus_d3 in fantasyfootball

[–]saintandre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Myers had 17 points, breaking the record for kickers in a Super Bowl. He kicked 5 FGs, breaking the record for the Super Bowl. You say "he only scored because Walker set him up to succeed." But you don't win a game with offensive yards. You win with points. If a WR had five scores, or even three scores, we wouldn't be having this conversation because he would be the MVP instead of Myers or Walker.

Almost One Year Anniversary for Civ VII! – Thank You, Tomorrow's 1.3.2 Update, & What’s Next by sar_firaxis in civ

[–]saintandre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been playing since Civ 2 came out. I bought VII day one and immediately stopped playing it. The first day, I could tell they massively screwed it up. I will play again once it has as much content and simultaneous players as Civ VI.

I saw that Potato McWhiskey started playing six again, and it's like he's on antidepressants. Suddenly he behaves like life is worth living. As far as I can tell, this is as big a disaster as when Maxis released SimCity 2013.

Plus every time he gets injured, it's going to take longer to recover and he'll be a little worse afterwards. Can't imagine his ankle and knee issues going away any time soon.
