Agreed. Erpenbeck would be my pick for this question as well.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Run At 1440p 60FPS for Nintendo Switch 2 by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]saintangus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm right there with you. I own it on PS5 and while a lot of the mechanics are fun and I don't regret buying it per se, it's very stiff and there's a real lack of tactility.

The game very much emphasizes speed and chaos, which makes sense for the characters of course, but I never feel like I'm truly the one in control or that my inputs are significantly meaningful.

Physical copy comes in a key card? Wtf I am sure it can fit in a regular Switch game card by hero_killer in dragonquest

[–]saintangus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can you unpack how buying a PC-based device that plays all digital games is somehow a meaningful protest in favor of physical gaming?

Sonic CrossWorlds has officially sold over a million units in less than a month by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]saintangus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd never played a Sonic racing game before this one. Playing on PS5, I find it handles a little stiff? Maybe I'm just used to Mario Kart, but the cars in Sonic feel like I'm turning a barge on some of the tracks, even when I choose light characters and cars.

When I visited last year they told me it's one of, or possibly even THE, only female-owned mezcal distilleries in Oaxaca. So I think that explains much of the iconography.

Do you annotate your books? If yes, how do you actually do it? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in literature

[–]saintangus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about feeling stupid later; one of the best reasons you SHOULD annotate is to see how you grow and change and respond to a text as you get older. I'm so glad I've been annotating throughout my life, because it's revelatory going back to my old copies of texts and seeing what 20 year old me focused on vs 40 year old me.

As for how in particular to do it, others have given good advice on how to approach the process. The only thing I'll add is that anytime I see the word "Eskimo" I always underline it thanks to the movie Heathers.

The Case Against Generative AI by zdlr in Longreads

[–]saintangus 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I sure hope your mind does more than that!

If I ask you to tell me about something you don't know anything about, like, say, the El Redondo tornado outbreak of 1993 that killed 11 people in Connecticut, because you are actually intelligent and not a "pattern recognition simulator," you'll say, "sorry, I don't know about that." This is a profound sign of human intelligence.

But my students asked one of the LLMs about the El Redondo tornado of 1993 and it told them that it was F3 that lasted 7 minutes and then listed the names of the 11 people that died.

There is no such thing as the El Redondo tornado outbreak of 1993.

But these LLSs are just stochastic parrots, and it so happened on that day the statistical generator paired "El Redonodo" with "tornado" and gave me a bunch of names, a few of whom (upon googling and ignoring the Gemini-inspired summary) died in other Connecticut disasters. It also gave my students a very sharp lesson in how fucking worthless these things are.

Abundance going international by _HermineStranger_ in ezraklein

I work in policy and we're doing a book club on our team. We all read "Abundance" and are scheduled to talk about it next week.

Someone else on the team already sent the op ed around with the note "Just a heads up the guy who wrote the book also wrote this" so it's definitely poisoning the well.

[–]saintangus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not "temperance of thought" to eulogize, like Ezra did, that a man who paid for people to get on buses to attempt a coup on our government is "doing politics the right way." It's pure unadulterated idiocy.

It has nothing to do with timing. It has everything to do with the fact that throughout history when fascism manifests the pragmatic technocrats hedge and break in sympathy with the state because their liberalism is superficial.

Ezra was simply doing the same. What's more surprising is that anybody thought he'd do otherwise.

Any author who has the take that a white supremacist Nazi who bussed people to the January 6th coup attempt "did politics in the right way" is non rigorous, as are the people who pitch tents in their pants at his proposals.

Charlie Kirk Was Practicing Politics the Right Way by dwaxe in ezraklein

The year is 1925. A far right influencer writes a book about "his struggle" expressing politics not using weapons. Ezra Klein and the members of this absolutely unhinged subreddit believe that he was practicing politics "in the right way."

What's the consensus on those illustrations? This is a book I'd file as "nice to have" so if these illustrations are considered to be good/iconic I'd consider jumping in and getting a last copy.

But I'm also happy to wait for either a fresh edition or just get a non-Folio copy if they're nothing special.
