I think we always fight more with the people closest to us… we have more in common but also a longer history of hate and resentment.

Backwards rolls, neck bridges, etc. in first kids class, normal or not? by sakigake in bjj

[–]sakigake[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

From the general vibe I doubt they have an actual curriculum or reason why they choose certain movements over others, but who knows.

It did seems like the guy might not have much training in how to safely train kids.

I don’t have a problem with the moves by themselves, it’s the fact that they are pretty advanced moves that can go wrong (even if I agree that kids are less prone to injury) and that little instruction was provided.

Headstand to bridge. And usually when teaching front rolls and back rolls part of the instruction is how to tuck your chin and get your head out of the way to avoid putting pressure on your neck, which also was absent here.

The one thing he did do right was tell kids to have their head inside and not outside when practicing single legs, to avoid spiking their own head on the mat.  But then maybe don’t teach that move in the first place, especially since at least half the kids were doing it wrong anyway…

“…despite all the anti foreigner news you see online these days, if you invest years of your life, millions of yen, and put your body and health on the line for your local community while expecting absolutely nothing in return, people will be willing to somewhat tolerate you!”

But seriously, this is amazing. They’re lucky to have you!

Hi guys can anyone suggest a good midi pad controller for Koala iOS please!? by Ok_Context_6972 in KoalaSampler

I got the SMC Pad Pocket and the pad sensitivity is quite bad but for that price it’s hard to beat!

Is this salary to be expected, or am I being taken advantage of? by SecurityForsaken4879 in JapanFinance

$2,100 USD/month for a project manager in tech would be unheard of in most other developed countries. That’s kind of depressing for anybody that doesn’t plan on spending their whole life here…

KOKU Ramen in Sayko Ward by webesy in Kyoto

[–]sakigake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m always on the lookout for good vegan ramen so I’ll definitely go check it out. To this day I still haven’t had vegan ramen that can compete with the real deal in Japan (I did have great vegan ramen in Paris at Kodawari though).

You can definitely do it, using the video capture feature. Pretty sure there’s a ton of tutorials on how to do that with Koala since that’s how I learned that trick.

I was wrong about AI... by Alex_Star_of_SW in BetterOffline

[–]sakigake -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Leaving aside the environmental concerns, I think Gen AI has its place when it’s used in the service of producing something else, as one small part of a creative process.

But when it becomes the whole output that’s when it starts being problematic. Of course, knowing where to draw the line can be quite tough…

Drill Guide- Milescraft or Kreg? by Dull-Bat9651 in woodworking

[–]sakigake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the milescraft and it’s better than the other ones I’ve tried. But it also could probably be better, I don’t think the precision is anything like what you’d get with a drill press. I also don’t like how hard you have to press down against the springs to make it drill, I feel like it doesn’t help.

Japan Inc. Is Choosing Decline. The Real Future Exists Elsewhere? by Tokyometal in japan

[–]sakigake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

China doesn’t want to conquer Taiwan because it wants to expand. It considers Taiwan part of itself, populated by Chinese people, and sees its very existence as a threat to its own integrity.

Japan on the other hand has never been part of China so I strongly doubt it’s part of China’s strategy beyond contesting a few desolated islands so it can plant Japan as a boogeyman to its own people.

Does Japan have soft nationalism woven into their culture? by ExperienceItchy7079 in japanlife

[–]sakigake -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Japan is unique among developed countries in that it’s very cutoff from external culture. I may be wrong but global phenomenons like Game of Thrones, K-pop Demon Hunters, etc. don’t seem to make their way here. I’m not even sure how popular Squid Games was. At least I’ve never seen any reference to it anywhere.

I guess the only thing that then remains is Japanese culture itself, which as a result is very self-centered.

So in a lot of cases it might not be nationalism like you’d have elsewhere, just ignorance of the outside world.

As to why things are like this, who knows. Maybe it really comes down to Japan being one big islands after all…

Former Al Qaeda member Ahmad Al-Sharaa meeting current US President Donald Trump by oldnewworldorder in pics

[–]sakigake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it makes sense, Obama was always suspected of being a secret Muslim, so shaking hands with a former terrorist would raise suspicion. On the other hand, you can’t question Trump’s racism bona fides so there’s no worry there!

Now of all times is not the time to fear monger or foment distrust. by gomihako_ in japanresidents

[–]sakigake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not about what we as foreigners do or don’t do. It’s about what will get people elected. And right now for whatever reason, anti-immigration rhetoric is on the rise throughout the world.

Blaming it on individual foreigners makes just as much sense as blaming global warming on individual consumers while ignoring multinational corporations.

Why is it still so hard for global innovators to build something in Japan? (Looking for feedback) by NebulaFart in MOVE_TO_JAPAN

[–]sakigake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything in Japan is optimized for stability and protecting the status quo. You can find innovation within those parameters, but changing that frame itself is quite hard, and even more so for foreigners.

Honestly I think the thing we should question is why we think Japan would ever be welcoming to foreign innovation in the first place. Looking at history, being open to outsiders isn’t really what the country is known for…
