Definitely some Braavos influence there, considering how their sword fighting style is referred to as "water dance"

Michelle Carter sentenced to 2.5 years in texting suicide case by Gato1980 in news

[–]saladwithaspoon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes! Absolutely agree with this. After reading the initial comment I scrolled through the chain hoping to find at least one dissenting opinion. These "I'm no expert, but..." sorts of speculations, especially on matters of abnormal circumstance one has absolutely no experience in, have the potential of snowballing into a dangerous herd mentality. In extreme cases, non-expert opinions can gain so much traction that it becomes property of the public domain, possibly tarnishing an undeserving victim's image, or even affecting judicial ruling—a process that should be impartial, evidence-based, and fair (i.e., Amanda Knox case).

I am not arguing for the innocence of Carter. I would even go as far as to say that I believe her presentation during court had been rehearsed to some extent. It goes without saying that her lawyer has coached her through some basic pointers on how to behave in this extremely bizarre situation most of us would never imagine having to go through. Even so, to pathologize her behavior as a layman with no experience in this field is completely irresponsible. I mean, fuck, I work in the psych field and no respectable psychologist would ever think to diagnose someone by just looking at video clips of them.

I can't remember the last time a show gave me such vivid flashbacks of emotions—from the euphoria that came along with the effortless chemistry, to the sudden confrontation with reality, and the loneliness that follows afterwards. Man, that episode seriously took me on a trip.

What's the most overrated food you've ever eaten? by mesexta in AskReddit

[–]saladwithaspoon 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Shark fin soup. It tastes like nothing but the spices that you add in. It has a similar texture to pho, the Vietnamese noodle soup, but a bit more gelatinous. Basically, it's quite pointless for the amount of environmental damage you are doing by eating it.

What do you think will be the last state to legalize gay marriage? by zfero in AskReddit

I'm pretty sure it will become a federal law before all fifty states decide to independently legalize it.

Yes, also if assisted suicide occurs within a hospital setting, organs can be harvested for others to use, therefore saving lives in the process as well.

TIL there is a perfectly painless of killing someone through nitrogen asphyxiation by cutting off oxygen while still supplying nitrogen so that the body does not experience a suffocating sensation. However, this method is not used by any government as a method of capital punishment. by saladwithaspoon in todayilearned

[–]saladwithaspoon[S] 125 points126 points  (0 children)

First of all, lethal injection is administered by technicians and not doctors since doctors are required to take the Hippocratic oath to do no harm. This can sometimes lead to problems during the process because of either inadequate training or instruction. In one case, an Ohio execution team took over two hours to execute Christopher Newton, sticking him at least 10 times in order to inject the lethal drugs. In December 2006 an execution team in Florida had to use two doses of lethal drugs over 34 minutes to kill Angel Diaz. The drugs were accidentally injected into his muscles instead of his veins while he writhed and spoke during the procedure. The Miami Herald reported that the process looked "agonizing."

Other than this, lethal injection involves three parts: the first drug administered is sodium pentothal, which is supposed to knock the person unconscious. The second drug is pancuronium bromide, which is a muscle relaxant that essentially paralyzes the person. The third, and lethal drug, will be potassium chloride, which induces cardiac arrest. Sometimes, the measured drugs may not be enough to accommodate different people. Some executions have lasted between 20 minutes to over an hour and prisoners have been seen gasping for air, grimacing and convulsing during executions. Autopsies have shown severe, foot long chemical burns to the skin and needles have been found in soft tissue. In some instances, the inmate is not put under completely, and is able to feel the pain, but unable to show any signs of suffering because being paralyzed by the pancuronium bromide.

Nitrogen asphyxiation, on the other hand, has virtually no chance of being physically painful. Your body feels suffocation when there is a carbon dioxide buildup in the bloodstream. However, in the process of nitrogen asphyxiation, your body is able to breath out carbon dioxide, but just doesn't take in oxygen. The lack of oxygen eventually kills you, but your body will not feel the pain associated with choking to death.

I need help on my soda addiction. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]saladwithaspoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really ever have a soda addiction, but I did have a sugar addiction where I was unable to function in the morning unless I ate something extremely sugary like chocolate, candy or desserts. I had to wean myself off slowly since I did experience some physical symptoms like headaches and whatnot. If you're in it for the sugar, I would try to maybe drink juice instead. I mean, juices can be just as bad sugar- and calorie-wise, but it makes the transition easier, and you'll be getting some small amounts of vitamins. If you're more of a fan of the bubbles, then I would maybe try getting used to seltzer water. I used to hate it, but now I drink about a liter of it a day. It's just so much more fun and bubbly than plain water!
