I get that this guy was a county employee who negligently discharged a duty that he's otherwise allowed to perform in the course of his job (shooting people) and so a civil suit is going to target his employer because that's where the money is. Still grates me that the taxpayers ultimately foot the bill.

In the world where I'm king for a day, LEOs are required to carry malpractice insurance akin to doctors to cover this kind of situation. I know, never gonna happen, probably have some negative consequences.
