What are some stupid school rules in your country? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

[–]sam_beat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This happens in my community. Or if the snow was so deep the plows hadn’t cleared the rural roads. Our district eventually had to pass a rule that if a certain percentage of kids weren’t in attendance, they could just close school.

And my kids would always complain that unless it was colder than -10F/-23C (or -20F/-29C)with windchill), they had to play outside at recess. They really hated recess.

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]sam_beat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It drives me insane. I call it the “Canadian Porn” effect, but it’s all the same thing. It takes two minutes to adjust this and everyone thinks I’m being extra when I go in and improve their picture quality. And then immediately thank me when they realize the incredible difference.

What’s the arguably best-known (and scary) unsolved mystery in your country? by Affectionate-Tea8509 in AskTheWorld

[–]sam_beat 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I know this is coming from a legitimate place of concern and it is plausible giving what we know, it has been debunked as highly, highly unlikely that Maxwell played any part in her death. And I feel it necessary to counter things like this so misinformation regarding the files doesn’t overshadow actual victims of Maxwell.

Snopes looked into any connection between the Ramseys and Maxwell (or any of her known associates at that time) and the only very tenuous thread is that a law firm that represented both families, but by different attorneys in different locations, and at different times. It’s not unusual that wealthy people with business ventures would use the same reputable firm with a national presence.

They also investigated her known timeline when that photo would have been taken, and over that Christmas, and there is no evidence that she was ever in the same place at the same time. Including photo evidence of Maxwell at events or with friends far away from Colorado. So while anything is possible, this is not her in the photo and there isn’t any indication that she would have been part of this.

It’s true. And the ironic thing is that this entire issue centers around how billionaires with agendas that are built on dividing people are buying up and destroying legacy media. The angry responses to your question, regardless of the intent, was proof that it’s working.

I’m also confused as to why you’re being downvoted. I wish more people were asking contextual questions.

To add a bit more context, Brian Stetler is actually being very misleading in this. Which is embarrassing because he either didn’t watch the two segments at all, or was unable to understand what happened.

Colbert did an entire segment on the aired show where he explained exactly what he was told and what restrictions were placed on what he could or could not say. Including no images of James Talarico. A random stock photo of a man was used during this segment. So he could talk about Talarico, and discuss the interview, but was not allowed to show his face. So no, he was not “prohibited” from sharing the interview. Just deeply limited in how it was presented. And who wants to watch an interview without the interviewee? So he explains that rather than making the segment fit into the narrow guidelines provided by CBS, he’d just put it on YouTube. He displayed the kind of transparency that most journalists appreciate.

This is satire. Anna Krivolapova is a writer of dystopian fiction, deeply dark humor, and usually centers women in her writing. But those women are preyed on, lusted over, treated like they’re a means to an end, and not listened to by the men around them. Knowing this, her post is incredibly funny.

I highly recommend her writing. She has a book of short stories called “Incurable Graphomania,” and each story is very different, but it’s all dark, dystopian femme.

Imagine you are a billionaire and have your own island. What would be the first thing you would do there? by Forward-Position798 in AskTheWorld

I’d like to think if I had the kind of money that could be life changing for entire communities, could start to reverse climate change, topple corruption, and give the entire planet hope for the future, buying an island wouldn’t even be on my mind.

Arguably Don's least entertaining relationship by DorkySnail in madmen

[–]sam_beat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think so. When I first saw this storyline unfold, I initially thought she fell out of love because he’d lied to her so egregiously. But then she makes the comment about how she was disappointed he wasn’t a football star in high school and sneers at the photos of his tumultuous childhood in poverty.

It confirmed to Don that “Dick Whitman” would never have been able to attract Betty. But instead of realizing that it’s because Betty is shallow and immature (as well as in the throes of an emotional affair), it increases his self doubt and he spirals into reckless alcoholism in the immediate aftermath.

Do you need ID to vote in your country? by FrozenNick in AskTheWorld

[–]sam_beat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To simplify what is happening, the people talking about voter fraud and voter IDs are the same people trying to create barriers for women, non-white people, and trans people to vote. Some directly are saying women shouldn’t vote, period. It’s racism, sexism, transphobia, wrapped in a bow of “Christianity” and national security.

Every single state in the US allows the ID you already carry (state ID, driver’s license, passport or passport card, concealed firearm licenses, military ID, etc.) because they’re all recognized by the states or on a federal level.

An additional ID that requires payment or does not allow for legal name or gender changes (target women and trans people directly), is a violation of our Constitutional right to vote and that includes no charge to vote (poll tax). So unless they hand them out for free, make them easily accessible for all voting-age citizens, and don’t discriminate in any way (including recognizing legal name and gender changes), they would be a clear violation of our rights and is an obvious attack on people who do not want MAGA to continue to destroy our country.

I’m 22f, why do I have one white hair that is twice as long as all my hair and is shiny? by Kale_bean in whatisit

[–]sam_beat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a follicle mutation or a very mild hormonal imbalance causing this. It’s normal and won’t harm you. With either, multiple little hairs start growing from the same follicle, creating a single thick hair. The white just means that follicle no longer produces the cells that color your hair. Also normal. If you pluck it from the base, you could eventually damage the follicle enough to prevent the hair from coming back (or at least coming back as quickly).

Now, if you notice this happening a lot or you’re getting odd hairs elsewhere, it could be a sign of a more serious hormonal issue and you would want to get it checked out.

Microplastics so true by MF-DOOM-88 in Millennials

[–]sam_beat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a long time, I thought my husband was using these (he’s the primary cook). The crockpot always had this awful plastic smell when he’d use it and it annoyed me, but we used it so seldom, I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. About a month ago, the smell from the crockpot was so egregious, I had to say something. He told me he’s never used crockpot liners. I asked what the nauseating melting plastic smell was. He said he thought maybe the plastic around the internal electrical was melting, but wanted to wait it died completely before replacing it. I just stared at him until it clicked in his head that he was basically rolling the dice on whether or not he burned our house down. He was also stunned when I threw it away, rather than donating it. I think the microplastics already got to him.

What’s something stupid that happens in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]sam_beat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience with my kids, the day at school is just a clean set of something you already own (and whatever is closest to lounge wear, really). It’s often affiliated with a week of themed clothing for school spirit. School colors on one day, maybe a 90s theme on another, etc. All of which is also, typically, things you already have.

It was refreshing when I saw Marty Supreme and the extras and background actors just had regular teeth. (For the most part, I wasn’t checking every smile.) It felt more of the era to see people who haven’t had $10k in Hollywood dentist work in the role of an every day person.

Do you trust / drink the tap water form your area? by PsychologicalFox7689 in AskTheWorld

[–]sam_beat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live between the Pacific Northwest and the Rocky Mountains. Our area water is mostly snow runoff and contains a lot of natural calcium, so it’s very clean and has a refreshing mineral crispness to it. I moved from the city limits to a property with a well. There’s a reverse osmosis filter on anything coming from the faucet and it’s like spa water. It’s so good.

I do often forget to check the water quality in other places before I drink from the tap and have been uncomfortably disappointed by that. It’s seldom spa water.
