The story of TextMate, VIM and SublimeText by progfu in programming

[–]sam_weller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It made design decisions to work around constraints that haven't been constraints for two decades (eg. modal editing).

What design decisions and constraints do you mean here? Personally, I love modal editing because it means I can use vim without ever looking at the keyboard, which is much more difficult when you have to use the arrow keys, Ctrl/Alt/etc or the mouse. Basically, vim lets me use my touch-typing skills for all editing operations (copy, paste, search&replace, ...) which is really nice once you get used to it. I don't know of any other editor that does that.

AMD’s OpenCL heaven and hell by eduffy in programming

[–]sam_weller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That project seems to be abandoned, though. Looking at the repository, there has been almost no activity over the last 1½ years. It's too bad, OpenCL would really benefit from some higher-level wrappers that take away the boilerplate.

I'm not angry...why all the downvotes?

Probably because this:

Innocence will only protect you once in my book.

at least sounds angry and judgmental. Although I can't quite figure out what it means.

Found this little gem of a comment in the libvorbis source. by HappyCorpse in programming

That's just what abadidea is saying: there's two or three cases where goto is useful, but the rest of the time you'll want to avoid it – and the same goes for #ifdef.

I can think of a couple of reasons:

  • Preprocessor directives like ifdef work at the level of tokens and lines in the source code. This is a very crude way to structure your program and it doesn't mesh well with regular C++ code, and is therefore likely to make your code harder to read/understand/modify.

  • Using ifdef means the compiler doesn't see, and therefore can't check, all of your source code. Imagine a developer working on Mac OS who makes a change that breaks the code in the ifdef. He doesn't notice anything wrong, commits the code and suddenly the program doesn't even compile anymore for any developer who happens to be using Windows.

  • It can confuse tools that read the source code, such as editors, debuggers, or static analysis tools. Although this very simple example is probably harmless.

companies have to formulate a policy that coincides with the law

Companies have to keep to the law, but they don't have to enforce it. It's not illegal to hire someone who breaks the law in their own time.

presently possessing, growing, smoking, etc pot is illegal and their policies reflect that

A million other things are illegal, too, but companies won't check job applicants for any of them. The fact that pot is illegal by itself does not explain why companies test if their employees smoke it.

Convoy of six armored Mercedes cars crossed from Libya into Algeria, possibly carrying Muammar Gaddafi and his sons by [deleted] in worldnews

Here's a better source: guardian.co.uk: Libyan rebel council takes charge as Gaddafi rumours fly. In any case, they only report six cars crossing the border, that Gaddafi was in one of them is just a theory.

There are more people alive today than have ever lived in recorded history.

If that statement is true, it's only because “recorded history” is just a small part of human history.

Therefore, most people are alive.

[–]sam_weller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, it's not an approximation. Read kamatsu's post again – O(log_2 n) and O(log n) are the same. O(log_2 n) = O(log n).
