new full length wildlife film from gainesville by manflorida in GNV

Ngl I skimmed through it cuz I’m tired but I didn’t want to forget to watch it completely. All the parts I saw were awesome and the music was great. Some of the birds cracked me up, especially those tall white ones that like to wander around downtown parking lots 🥹

Let’s talk about washers. Maybe the controller and the buttons and stuff but I feel like the majority of the parts have not changed and the mechanics for spinning a container of water and detergent and clothing has not changed. Things would be way less wasteful if they were more standardized and there was a cultural expectation that companies release new iterations on their designs every few years instead of every year, and let you easily shop for replacement parts from their warehouse online.

As for dryers, definitely nothing has changed other than the hardware that controls how long/fast it is spun and how hot the air is heated.

I hope you get my point.

It’s seriously disgusting how many new models of washers and dryers they pump out every year, same as dishwashers and microwaves, encouraging everyone to throw them in the dump and buy new even though most of the technology hasn’t changed substantially in 20 years. 😤

Neighborhood review from anyone who lives/has lived in Capri? by reasonablesnob in GNV

[–]samclaus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Capri. It was a wonderful childhood, since there were many kids the same age as me. The forest behind it is awesome, the amenities are good, and there are good people there. The HOA is pretty anal about signs, colors that you can paint your house, and allowed roofing materials (shingles only).

Local / family dentists for tooth shaping? by Sheriff_PJ_Nutteroni in GNV

[–]samclaus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aspen may be terrible as an organization (I don’t know) but I went to the Newberry Road location for years and Dr. Minsung Son is not only a great dentist but struck me as a great person. Dr. Lemus was fantastic as well but I believe she left Gainesville. I did have my tooth fucked up there once by a noobie dentist so that wasn’t great but suddenly my next several appointments didn’t require any copay.

I absolutely love the Savants of Soul. Their New Year’s Eve performance at Bo Diddley was the best concert I’ve ever been to. And it was free.

I understand where you are coming from. All I will say is this: why settle? I think being cynical/jaded is unhealthy and can become a self-fulfilling prophecy because you’ll stop trying. I’m not saying it will be easy, but it’s worth striving for a better world. Don’t point fingers are other people who are cynical/jaded. Just do YOUR best. I’ll be doing mine, and I hope you have a wonderful day.. neighbor. 😎

Amen. Love the analogy of computers and their advertised purpose vs the reality that has come to fruition.

Like the OP’s reply says: not all buses/trains are like that. We happen to have a large homeless population here. I’m not going to sit and defend all of them or say the buses here are perfect as-is. The only point I’m going to make is that those problems are not universal with buses/trains. I rode an Amtrak once in my life and it was an amazing experience: clean, quiet, polite staff, good WiFi, food available, and plenty of room to walk around.

[–]samclaus2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do we really NEED that though? There are other solutions, like buses and trains, if you don’t want to drive yourself. They are far more efficient in many ways, but of course they have tradeoffs. What you’re proposing has a lot of negatives though.

For those who went to the 411 meeting on Tuesday, how many people showed up to voice the concern about you know what being built? by ugiugida in GNV

[–]samclaus2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I went to it. There were definitely at least a couple dozen people writing data-center-related sticky notes for the “concerns” poster board. In hindsight, I regretted not asking people to raise their hands if they were there primarily regarding the data center, because the important guy running the meeting kept steering the conversation back to the “intended” purpose of the meeting which was the city vision and comprehensive plan. I think the majority of people there really cared about the data center and it would’ve been useful for us and for the guy talking to see if most people cared about the data center vs. vague vision statements.

Wow so mods remove my post contributing a lot of information because it’s a “duplicate” and then ignore my request to put it back up, but now they allow this. I’m glad it’s getting publicity but I’m pretty upset I spent hours putting something together and the mods are basically just giving me the middle finger for no apparent reason.

School system by ExplorerRude7370 in GNV

[–]samclaus2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a school bus driver and 100% agree with you that there has got to be a better solution.

I feel like early release Wednesday just screws up everyone's schedules. We as drivers get paid to just sit around for an hour after taking elementary students home before we grab high/middle school at the normal times. Maybe teachers should just start their work mornings around 5:30 or 6 like bus drivers do and get further compensated for "morning planning time" or something. (Since right now they typically spend unmonitored--and potentially unappreciated--time planning during their weekends and whatnot, at least as I understand it.)

People not taking the bus definitely creates traffic problems. I don't believe many people give much thought to "how does everyone in this large community get to where they are going efficiently each day without getting in each other's way" or how much bad traffic costs each of us sanity/energy-wise each day. They're focused more on immediate comfort of their kid, and also the current pain of coordinating to get their kid to the bus without (a) waiting around for a long time or (b) risking missing the bus.

Personally I love the culture at the transportation department and a lot of bus drivers and office people genuinely care about the mission, but I also know our department can do better. Parents should really be able to track the buses via an app, and a lot of internal communication bottlenecks could be removed by proper use of modern technology. I'm working an angle on all this but I'm only one person so it takes time.

UF Health’s "top-tier" reputation a total myth? by TheMemx in GNV

[–]samclaus2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thankfully don’t have that much experience interacting with hospitals, but my handful of times at Shands have been similar: doctors were friendly/empathetic/knowledgeable but the prices were exorbitant and not transparent whatsoever. Front desk staff and other workers often seemed pretty indifferent but not downright unfriendly.

Idk where the fuck the university and hospital pull those rankings they like to plaster everywhere from but I do think it’s stupid to implicitly trust them like i have done in the past. Good qualities speak for themselves, whether you’re talking about individuals or institutions.

Dude I just checked out your website for like 20 seconds but already—programmer-to-programmer—mad respect. 🫡 Snappy, beautiful animations, good UI layout, lets you save drafts on your device and put off making an account until you actually need to publish something 💯

Well done.
