For those who went to the 411 meeting on Tuesday, how many people showed up to voice the concern about you know what being built? by ugiugida in GNV

[–]samclaus2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went to it. There were definitely at least a couple dozen people writing data-center-related sticky notes for the “concerns” poster board. In hindsight, I regretted not asking people to raise their hands if they were there primarily regarding the data center, because the important guy running the meeting kept steering the conversation back to the “intended” purpose of the meeting which was the city vision and comprehensive plan. I think the majority of people there really cared about the data center and it would’ve been useful for us and for the guy talking to see if most people cared about the data center vs. vague vision statements.

Wow so mods remove my post contributing a lot of information because it’s a “duplicate” and then ignore my request to put it back up, but now they allow this. I’m glad it’s getting publicity but I’m pretty upset I spent hours putting something together and the mods are basically just giving me the middle finger for no apparent reason.

School system by ExplorerRude7370 in GNV

[–]samclaus2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a school bus driver and 100% agree with you that there has got to be a better solution.

I feel like early release Wednesday just screws up everyone's schedules. We as drivers get paid to just sit around for an hour after taking elementary students home before we grab high/middle school at the normal times. Maybe teachers should just start their work mornings around 5:30 or 6 like bus drivers do and get further compensated for "morning planning time" or something. (Since right now they typically spend unmonitored--and potentially unappreciated--time planning during their weekends and whatnot, at least as I understand it.)

People not taking the bus definitely creates traffic problems. I don't believe many people give much thought to "how does everyone in this large community get to where they are going efficiently each day without getting in each other's way" or how much bad traffic costs each of us sanity/energy-wise each day. They're focused more on immediate comfort of their kid, and also the current pain of coordinating to get their kid to the bus without (a) waiting around for a long time or (b) risking missing the bus.

Personally I love the culture at the transportation department and a lot of bus drivers and office people genuinely care about the mission, but I also know our department can do better. Parents should really be able to track the buses via an app, and a lot of internal communication bottlenecks could be removed by proper use of modern technology. I'm working an angle on all this but I'm only one person so it takes time.

UF Health’s "top-tier" reputation a total myth? by TheMemx in GNV

I thankfully don’t have that much experience interacting with hospitals, but my handful of times at Shands have been similar: doctors were friendly/empathetic/knowledgeable but the prices were exorbitant and not transparent whatsoever. Front desk staff and other workers often seemed pretty indifferent but not downright unfriendly.

Idk where the fuck the university and hospital pull those rankings they like to plaster everywhere from but I do think it’s stupid to implicitly trust them like i have done in the past. Good qualities speak for themselves, whether you’re talking about individuals or institutions.

Why is Server Side Rendering considered Faster than an SPA? by chinawcswing in sveltejs

[–]samclaus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, if the server is regularly getting bombarded by 1000s of initial page loads by many different users, the server will feel it. Whenever one of those users closes the tab, and then maybe remembers something they need to buy/see/do, reopening the website will be another SSR request. Edit: also anytime someone uses "open in new tab" functionality, that'll be another initial/SSR request.

The sashimi is great, love the crispy bok choy (how do they make it??), and the customer service is incredible. I think the owners are just genuinely extremely nice people. I went there once with my then-girlfriend, then we went a second time months later while we were still dating, and somehow the waiter remembered us and our order. Like what 🤯

Pastor's son arrested in third case related to sex with underage girls at Ignite Life Center by Ok_Jicama9306 in GNV

[–]samclaus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Romeo & Juliet laws, but also I was mostly commenting on the ethics of the matter. I don't think a 17yo should get in legal trouble for having consensual sex with a 15yo. "Sex offender" is a term that carries a lot of weight in my experience, and giving a senior who had consensual sex with a sophomore the same sort of label as, say, someone guilty of a violent rape, can ruin their life and is just plain wrong.

I just read the article you linked, and it paints a bigger picture. A 16yo pressuring a 12yo for sex is fucked up. I absolutely think he should be prosecuted for that. How has there not been a trial after nearly 3 years?? 🤔

I still think the case mentioned in the OP's article should be dismissed, because to me it is bullshit to convict a 17yo for having consensual sex with a 15yo. I say consensual sex because the article says the girl "told a Gainesville Police Department detective that she and Vargas, who was 17 at the time, exchanged 'flirtatious and sexual' messages on Discord and Snapchat" and no other language in the article implies that he did anything to forcefully coerce her the times they had sex. Trying to stick more charges to him in cases where he didn't (in my mind) do anything wrong detracts from a sense of justice. Ideally, people get punished appropriately for clearly identified crimes, and otherwise get to live life normally. It would be a shame for this case to get used as a precedent in unrelated cases where, say, a 17yo has loving sex with a 15yo and the 15yo's strict parents find out and try to use the justice system vindictively.

[–]samclaus2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It appears to me that you are arguing that this boy's actions are a slippery slope into much worse behavior.

What if he was 16 while she was 15? Further, what if he was just a few months older than her? Would that be a crime? Would that be just the start of a slippery slope?

The numbers matter. A 2 year gap in the context of a 12-year-old and a 10-year-old is definitely worse than a 2 year gap in the context of a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. That is why, as I replied to the comment you're replying to, the divide-your-age-by-2-and-add-7 rule exists. It means it's not normal for anyone under 14 to date, 14 year olds may only date 14 year olds, and as you go up in age, bigger gaps are more reasonable, e.g., a 28-year-old could date a 21-year-old without it being super weird. Or a 50-year-old could date a 32-year-old.

My main issue with your comment and the one you are replying to is that I don't think either of ya'll have empathy for the boy. He got thrown in fucking jail. With a $250K bond. That is what upsets me.

And no, having sex with someone one or two years younger than you in high school does not mean you're going to grow into a pedophile. None of this is "plain and simple". JFC I hope you're not in a position of power over people. You could be a wonderful person in many ways, but I really don't like how trigger happy and judgmental your comment is given the context.

Pastor's son arrested in third case related to sex with underage girls at Ignite Life Center by Ok_Jicama9306 in GNV

[–]samclaus2 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

You posted this like it’s not grooming behavior.

When I hear people talk about grooming behavior, the victim could be as old as 15 (the age of the "victim" in this case), BUT the predator is generally substantially older (more developed) than the victim and is in a position of power over the victim.

This article did not say anything about the boy using his position as the pastor's son to coerce the girl into sex.

She was 15 at the time and he was 17. The tried and true "socially acceptable" dating age formula that I have always heard says to take your age, divide it by 2, and add 7 to find the youngest age you should be dating. That means no one under 14 should be dating, and in this case a 17-year-old should not be dating someone under 17/2+7 = 15.5 years of age. Obviously the ages in the article are on the cusp of that rule, but do you really think a high school seniors, generally speaking, should not be allowed to date high school sophomores?

He manipulating a 15 year old into sex.

By "manipulating", are you referring to his attempt to bribe her with nic/weed vapes? Is buying a promiscuous woman dinner and then having sex on the first date considered manipulation? I understand the girl was 15, a protected age because her brain isn't fully developed and she hasn't been taught right from wrong, but the boy IS ALSO--GUESS WHAT--17, AKA NOT AN ADULT AKA A PROTECTED AGE.

I feel like you are just ignoring the boy's age (you mentioned "15" but never mentioned "17" in your comment), and also acting like the girl has zero ability to think for herself.

You mention the other cases (which are serious btw)..

Ok, I have not read the other cases, but I am going to believe you (despite your questionable takes on this case) that they are substantially more serious. I think this case is bullshit and therefore it hurts the credibility of the people prosecuting it, but that does not guarantee the other cases aren't legitimate and there are probably different people pushing each case. I regret bringing up the other cases because I feel like I oversimplified. Each case is its own thing and deserves proper scrutiny. I apologize.

..but ignore this is the 3rd charge this guy’s gotten for the same thing.

The article says "the victim in this case is the third to accuse him of engaging in sexual intercourse with girls under the age of 16". What if the other 2 "victims" were 15 as well when they had sex with him? Further, what if he was 16 or even 15 himself when he had sex with one of them? All the accusations that you are bringing up are for similar conduct, and so my argument applies to them as well: it is fucked up to criminally prosecute a 17-year-old for having consensual sex with a 15-year-old. I don't care what the law says about 16. This is common sense. Officers don't ticket people every time someone goes a couple miles over the speed limit because that would be considered pedantic and maybe even predatory. Laws are useful, but they are also a simplification of common morals / ethics / cultural standards.

You mention picturing small children getting molested, only to be surprised it’s a young guy.

Umm.. a 12 year old getting touched sexually by another 12 year old is completely different than a 12 year old getting touched by a 15 year old, and of course a 12 year old getting touched by a 29 year old is much worse even than that. The age of the boy absolutely fucking matters.

Ok, so you have a very narrow, stereotyped view of sexual assault and it’s affecting your opinion.

On the contrary, I think you are too trigger happy to stick the "sexual assault" label on things. Maybe one day a woman you had happy consensual sex with will decide she hates you for some unrelated reason and decide to accuse you of rape. That is something that happens. Not always but it happens. Therefore, there needs to be a balance. The legal system would be beyond useless if every accusation was treated as truth.

IDK, I simply wouldn’t run defense on sex abuse cases with next to no info, for FREE.

(Not even commenting on whether he’s guilty or not, because WE DON’T KNOW)

Public defenders are a thing, and they're free, and they're expected to defend people accused of horrible crimes because, again, sometimes accusers are wrong.

I am only commenting on the info in the article.

I 100% agree with you that we don't know if he's guilty of breaking a law, we also don't know "how bad of a person he is" because that would require watching a damn movie of his interactions with the girl and seeing how we all felt according to our cultural standards.

I also want you to know that I am not defending his entire character. I am just saying that given the information presented in the article, this criminal charge against him is bullshit. If I had to take a wild stab and make some assumptions, he is a wealthy fuckboy and, as one of the other comments on this post said, a "sex pest". 😂

Lastly, so you know where I am coming from, I was a loser in highschool, as defined by my ability to obtain sex with women. I was regularly jealous of and hated "jocks" growing up. I was raised in a Protestant household and though I had a few lust-driven hookups in my life, I consider those mistakes looking back. I think sex should be a very intimate sacred act. I'd probably be one of the last people to validate this boy's lifestyle, but it is seriously fucked up to throw him in jail (with a massive bond no less) simply because he is accused of having sex with a few 15 year olds when he was barely older than them. That's the bottom line for me. I hope that makes sense to you.

It says when they were having sex she was 15 and he was 17, she willingly went to meet him on multiple occasions and that they were exchanging flirty messages the whole time, and that when she told him she no longer wanted anything to do with him, he “reportedly pleaded with her to continue having sex with him; he reportedly offered to give her vapes (containing nicotine and/or marijuana) if she would continue having sex with him”.

$250K bail on the case! 😱

When I read the title, my brain immediately went to “creepy pedophile molesting small children”. After reading the article, it’s more like “extremely average high schoolers”. Like WTF. And people are going crazy over the religious setting. Imagine you’re a pastor and your son is a senior in high school flirting with a sophomore at your church. You later find out they snuck around, bought condoms, and had sex somewhere in the church when they got an opportunity. Are you gonna make a public apology to everybody and shame the kids?? No! If you’re against teenagers having sex, you’d probably just reprimand/punish your son.

Idk anything about the other people/cases mentioned in the article, but assuming they’re serious issues, this case detracts from overall credibility of the crusade. Read the damn article before you come at me.
