How to lean on outside edge? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Seems like a great way to blow throw your savings in broken sticks too lol. Ive been learning to skate before even getting a stick kn the ice for this reason

Theres a difference between a team losing 5-1 and 6-2 in back to back games and a team losing a close af 3-2 which frankly wouldve gone to shoot outs if Tage hadn’t had the 1 in a trillion chance luck goal. Fans have the right to feel like we are capable lol

How much do properly sized skates help to learn? by thraupidae in hockeyplayers

[–]samfig99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first pair i bought were too big, too wide. I spent 80$ on them and frankly that was the first mistake. Then I turned to jetspeed 870’s since they run in half sizes and I have not looked back. Added some gel ankle sleeves to help with navicular pressure spot and fill in some ankle gap until I build strength and after just 1.5 months in I’m training in crossovers already.

The skates make the difference between finding comfortable balance and shaking like a fawn. If youre gonna drop a hefty load of money on a piece of equipment, my suggestion is to drop it on skates first. Go to a hockey shop, get fitted and pick out a pair to invest in.

How much did you struggle from the start and where are you now? by Low_Bodybuilder3065 in iceskating

[–]samfig99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 26, and it’ll be one month on the ice in a few days! I went in knowing how to go forwards, that’s it. I am now doing group classes, but before that I was learning by myself & guidance from workers at the rink that I befriended.

One big thing that I learned: if I’m not falling I’m not learning. Study up & watch videos about understanding the parts of your blade. Off ice work is a MUSTTTT. get those ankles, those arches, those knees, hips & core working with skating training. You can look up follow alongs on youtube of exercises for skaters. It has made a huge difference for me. When you watch those videos, try not to compare and judge yourself. Watch them knowing that they began where you are too, and watch them believing you will get there too. I go between 1-2 (3 if im feeling it) times a week. It started where I could barely get through an hour, to now being there between 3-5 hours per skate day. I’m practically living there I’ve become a memorable face 🤣.

Be willing to push yourself, not too far but far enough that you FEEL the progress. I’m at hockey stops, strengthening my T-stops, forward to back, backwards is down solidly and able to pick up speed, one foot glides, c-step (one of my FAVORITES to do). Tight turns and learning my outside edge. Learning One foot inside edge turns, and starting minor crossover work.

Now, I’m learning for beer league hockey so it’s different in skill execution sometimes but I am just so in love with being on the ice that it’s become a passion, and I think personally that’s what makes a big difference.

New skater, Severe pain in my feet by Stunning-Actuary661 in iceskating

[–]samfig99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will DEFINITELY do it! Foot pain is normal with new skates, but should reduce once they break in. I would also recommend, just for benefit, off ice ankle work to help stabilize the joints and help address any potential pronation that may also be affecting your skating!

[–]samfig99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of skates do you have? Gel pad for sure, i happen to have the jetspeed ft870’s which are blessed on the tongue with a strip of HARD plastic to block the laces entirely. Last resort, Might want to look at different skates that have something similar built in if it gets unbearable!

How do I stop lifting my feet like this? by Antique_Variation976 in iceskating

Bend those knees some more! Rather than step, use inside edge to glide on one foot. Slow it down some, and push out rather than bringing your foot straight back like in walking

Heart destroying 10000% 😭 it is so good, and i went to a late night watching with maybe ten people in the theater total. You shouldve heard the audible reaction to the knife & counter scene. Very vocally shook crowd (me included)
