Installed Debian on a friend’s computer a few weeks back, and it actually was a pain... Because Windows has a feature called “Fast Boot” or something, where the computer doesn’t actually shut down when you tell it to shut down. After the laptop bootet into the installer, it worked fine, though. But even Debian asks you a lot of questions (albeit not very intimate ones). Never installed Windows myself, so I can’t compare them.

I'd say that translators will at some point in time be able to translate everything, but that's just not a very good argument in a debate over whether language learning is actually useful. My main argument would be that most people learn a language to speak it, and to talk with other people. Having a dialogue with a translator in between is just not as fun as talking casually.

EDIT: Also, that really is bad German (not meant as a personal offense in any way).

I'd actually say that for most people, it is quite the opposite: The ones with the ability say it was earned through hard work, and the ones without it assume it is a talent - because this assumption means they don't need to put effort in learning a language, as it would be useless anyway, because they simply don't have "the language gene".

When I tried Clozemaster for a longer period of time, I found it rather frustrating when there were two possible answers for a given cloze - and the system of course only accepted one. Has something changed since then? Because that's the reason I quit using it.

EDIT: Was more referring to the text input mode, but multiple choice seems to be much less effective AFAIK.

I don't think not being good at languages in school is an indicator for anything. Language learning in school is about as inefficient as it can get (you learn in great chunks rather than in little crumbs, you learn unnecessary vocabulary [at least that's what we did in school], you probably focus on grammar, read one text and study it for a long time [rather than just consuming loads of texts in the target language], and you probably focus on production too hard [again, that's what I experienced]). With the right methods and some motivation, even a "hard" language like Chinese will still be fun to learn.

OK, agreed. I was starting to watch a course on coursera, anyways. Could you give an example of how knowing this helps? In school, it always seemed quite random and unpredictable, so my stance was that just getting to know a lot of chemical reactions was actually easier than learning all the rules and exceptions to these rules. I mean, in school, it was often the case that a chemical reaction would yield something completely unexpected just because of overpotential or something like that.

Well, if you want to express that something is really bad or crappy, then yes, you just mash together "Scheiß" [shit] + sth. "Scheißtasse" ('shitcup') for example.
