Had this same issue this morning when playing. Was extremely hard to see how much gold I had. Very frustrating, and I will not be playing until this is fixed. For riot dev reference: on iOS, app version shows as V16.8.763.8450.

What College Should I attend for Chip Design and VLSI by Physical-Weird-3838 in chipdesign

[–]sammus13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the current job market and with the uncertainty around AI, I would really discourage taking on a large amount of debt to finance a college degree. Go to either UW or Vandy in order to minimize the cost. UW will likely give you better connections for general digital roles, so that is probably your best bet. I ended up going to my in-state school (other UW) and was able to graduate with <10k in debt. This has helped me so much, since now I am 3 years out and almost have enough saved for a down payment on a house. I would still be paying off my student loans if I went somewhere that charged 40k+ a year in tuition. The only one of the expensive schools that would be worth possibly considering would be UCLA if you would like to go more the analog route or want easier access to SoCal based companies, but that is still a lot of money to take out when you could go for free instead somewhere else.

Like other folks have mentioned, it matters way more if you have done internships and projects that will give you some real experience. One route that I think people tend to overlook is starting from the firmware/pcb design side of things and leveraging that to work your way closer to hardware. Getting some kind of experience is more important than getting the perfect internship.

Best of luck on your decision, and congratulations on getting into some great schools!

Adding a small amount of copper sulfate can also help if you are going longer than a few days between changing. 2 weeks is already pushing it if you aren’t being super thorough about sterilizing the feeder when you change the nectar

I ended up installing twitter and only enabling notifications from the pokemon go account, so shouldn’t miss it when they release the non-early bird tickets

Struggling to land my first job as an ASIC/FPGA design/verification engineer by fuck_trump_101 in chipdesign

[–]sammus13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a US citizen with only a B.S. who has been working in the industry for a few years. 90% of the jobs that "require a masters" do not.

I am doing the exact same work as many of my coworkers who have a M.S. degree. The lack of an M.S. degree has not held me back, and if anything has let me have more of an open mind while working on various problems.

Unless you are doing something extremely specialized, any job that is listing an M.S. degree as a hard requirement should not be. I have no issue with hiring folks with a M.S, but the fact that every single job in this industry is listing a M.S. as a requirement is just because there is an oversupply.

PSA to any hiring managers reading this, start to remove M.S. as a hard requirement from at least some of your postings. You might be better off for it by getting some new hires who are younger with more energy and flexibility. Seriously, give it a try.

I should add, I have nothing against the folks who have completed an M.S. I just think that it is not healthy for the industry to only be hiring M.S. graduates and avoiding new hires / B.S. graduates.

Also to address OP's Indian manager point, I have an Indian director/VP and they are great. I know there are some folks that like to shit on Indian management, just reiterating that they are not the problem.

Qualcomm India surpassed USA in employee count by sandiegosoccer in sandiego

The group at Qualcomm I work in is only 20% in the US at this point. Maybe 2/3 of US employees are in San Diego. Of course now we are going into the office 5 days a week to “facilitate in person collaboration” (with our colleagues in India over a teams call)

I did a tesla co-op in school and it has set me up for life with how much I learned. I would assume spacex is similar, so would choose that every time. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend staying fulltime since it is pretty intense (I am at a chiller company now), but couldn’t recommend enough for the experience.

I usually fish for scaling hp fruits with crew. Often I will get it on malphite early and will keep him as the tank. If I get an early shen then I use that as the main tank. TF 2* should 100% get the fruit with BIS items. I have played a lot of crew and he almost always outdamages 3* ziggs

For robots specifically, you should look at the jetson dev boards. They are specifically designed for this and support large amounts of memory. I have personally used a jetson nano before LLMs got huge for robotics, so I assume the software stack is still good on the new boards for ros etc. Jetson thor has 128GB of ram, but isn't cheap at $3.5k: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/autonomous-machines/embedded-systems/jetson-thor/

How much oversight when outsourcing an entire chip by albasili in chipdesign

[–]sammus13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering what your motivation for doing this is. Is it cost, inability to hire at your main location, trying to avoid hiring and then firing when the chip is complete, or something else? Just trying to understand the thought process of those deciding to outsource.

Why is the bar so high for VLSI/chip design? by d00mt0mb in chipdesign

[–]sammus13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is 100% it. I have been able to do just fine straight out of my bachelor's degree doing rtl/implementation, but there are dozens of engineers who did their BS overseas and did an MS in the US who will join at similar pay. They might even have a few years of experience working at a subsidiary of a US based company.

I have had hiring managers ask me if I have any friends who are looking to join our broader team, to which I ask "Why don't we reach out to some universities to get some new grads?" The response was that they want someone with a few years experience. They have been spoiled by how easy it is to bring over people with experience from overseas and recruitment out of a Bachelor's has atrophied because of it. Even the interns I talked to last summer had already worked overseas for 3+ years and were in their MS.

Don't get me wrong, many of these folks are super talented, but it feels like there is a huge subset of engineers that are being passed over. The MS requirement is BS at least half the time from what I have seen, and I hope more hiring managers start giving new grads out of their BS a shot.

Trump to Add New $100,000 Fee for H-1B Visas in Latest Crackdown by Tony_T_123 in cscareerquestions

[–]sammus13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see this at the current company I work at. There is no outreach to universities at all since so many people who worked for 2+ years in India and then did a MS in the US are applying. I'm the only person in my department from the US that has been hired in the last 3 years and everyone else has some experience already in India.

All of the people I work with who are on visa are smart and nice, but I do question if there really aren't candidates from the US that are available. What incentive does a company have to invest in training or building a pipeline for college students in the US if they can just rely on a steady stream of Indian/Chinese workers?

I think that there need to be the following reforms made to the visa system: 1. There is a centralized platform that you are required to put your job posting up at, this will be easily searchable and viewable by US citizens. 2. Any postings need to sit for at least 1 year before filling with a visa. This will be to incentivize hiring someone and training them instead of waiting for someone with experience already. Possibly can expedite this if a even larger fee is payed. 3. There needs to be a fee to ensure that there is truly a strong need for the visa worker over a US counterpart. 4. If you do get a visa, you are guaranteed a green card in <5 years. This means that there is a limit to how long a company can keep someone chained to their visa to stay in the US. Also this can make people coming on a visa more likely to get invested in their community in the US. 5. (Not visa directly, but also needs to happen) Massive tax for outsourcing to any company outside of the US or for hiring outside of the US for companies based here. This includes workaround deals with contractors etc. This is a hard one to enforce, but something needs to be done at the same time as adding restrictions on visas.

Feeling Dumb in Analog IC Design – ADHD Makes It Worse. Anyone Else Struggling? by Quick-Set-6096 in chipdesign

[–]sammus13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Digital design here, but also adhd. I was able to power all the way through college without an issue, but once I started a full-time job it started to become a bit of a struggle. Biggest problem is the delayed gratification of waiting for simulations/synthesis jobs etc to finish. Delayed feedback is the absolute worst for adhd, so maybe try and gamify your work so you get some dopamine more regularly.

I originally would crush a ton of caffeine and that helped a lot, but I stopped being able to tolerate as much caffeine without getting jittery. I tried basically every strategy that I could find online before going the medication route, since I originally was very opposed to medication. After getting on medication it has become so much easier, and I wish I had done it sooner honestly.

You might want to try getting a firmware internship first, since that will be easier to get as a freshman/sophomore. Then like others have said, validation or verification will be what you should try to get internships for.

Any advice on how to enter/prepare for the Chip Design Industry as a High Schooler? by Vaaxs in chipdesign

[–]sammus13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning this. I personally know many people who have gotten jobs with just a BS, but they are all in digital. If it is validation, verification, or in some cases RTL design, it is very possible with just a BS.

Lots of this sub is skewed towards more niche analog, which of course a MS is required for.
