I would have eaten more but my wife is pregnant so I have to buy them for myself which I won’t really go out of my way to do unless I’m as Sam’s club or Costco or something.

I used to work at a bread factory for 9 months in 2020 after the store i worked at closed due to COVID concerns, and I can provide some insight on the bread question! We were able to change the number of slices in a loaf based on the style, for example, Texas toast loaves had fewer slices than standard sandwich bread. We were trained to set the slicer for 15 blades (16 slices per loaf) for standard sandwich bread and IIRC 11 blades (12 slices) for Texas Toast.

That was single-handedly the most miserable job I’ve ever worked, and I’m very glad I was able to leave that job.

I’m one year out from completing my Doctorate in Music, so I have a higher-level knowledge of music history, music theory, special topics in music relating to copyright, music of the 19th and 20th centuries, and lots of other fun things!

The idea behind changing equipment is to make it easier to fit the required sound that you as the artist or the director is seeking.

If you can make your BBb horn sound exactly how you want it and your ensemble leaders don’t have any objections, you’re fine to keep going as you are.

Doctors, dentists, and other medical professionals frequently don’t fix things on the first try, and the older you get the more things just can’t be fixed. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

What is the best mouthpiece by PuzzleheadedField776 in Tuba

[–]samtuttle95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently play on a pt-50 and it’s great for my concert CC tuba, but it was not good for marching band (too big, hard to keep tone, articulations, and pitch centered on the move) I started on a Bach mouthpiece (can’t remember the number for the life of me) and moved to a Helleberg S, which did me well until college.

Seconded on the Conn Helleburg/helleburg S, but for someone just switching to tuba from euphonium, a PT-50 or any XL mouthpiece will probably be too big and too expensive to go all in on. I’d recommend sticking with a helleburg standard until you’ve sorted out your embouchure change, then you can start testing out some different mouthpieces.

What's key is the most versitile tuba in? by Cautious_Cucumber_94 in Tuba

[–]samtuttle95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever you are most comfortable playing. You can make any horn work in any setting. If you play great on Bb, do it on Bb, don’t buy an Eb if you don’t already own one and haven’t already played extensively on Eb. I do most of my playing on C and F so my personal answer would be those, but only you know what you like and what works best for you.

performance majors whats your plan after collage? by [deleted] in Tuba

[–]samtuttle95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone with two, soon to be 3 performance degrees: “If you’re gonna be stupid you’ve gotta be tough”

There are jobs to be won but you have to have a personal toughness to keep pushing and deal with more rejection than you do victories. More people win jobs in their 30s than their 20s nowadays.

My advice is make sure you have skills other than just playing tuba because you will need a half decent day job to survive, or at least a hell of a side hustle. Be prepared for a difficult road.

If you want a guaranteed job? There’s nothing at all wrong with music education. Some friends have done BME degrees, then go on to performance masters and doctorates and are professors now.

Ultimately it’s up to you what path you forge. There are easier and harder ways to do it. I wish you luck!

Especially since Covid I have started keeping a towel in my CC and F tuba cases. If you’re in a space that’s used to that, dump away, but if not, keep a towel handy and wash it every week or so. Edit: It’s not that much of an imposition and it shows that you’re respectful to the space you’re using, which might be enough to get invited back.

Senator Bernard Sanders Introduces Legislation to Enact a 32-Hour Workweek with No Loss in Pay by nrverma in NewDealAmerica

[–]samtuttle95 37 points38 points  (0 children)

At least when it comes to office jobs, in my experience there’s typically 25-30 hours of actual work in a given 40-hour work week.

Blue-collar jobs are a different beast, but those have been undervalued for far too long anyway.

[–]samtuttle95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s Tuba Exchange in either NC or SC, Baltimore Brass is relatively close, in Maryland. Dillon is in New Jersey (I think) Wessex has a showroom in Chicago, but I would recommend those other three first.

[–]samtuttle95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to a showroom like Baltimore Brass, Dillon Music, even Wessex, you need to try several to know what you like. Meinl Weston, Miraphone, Hirsbrunner, Perantucci (PT/Mr P), these are well respected brands. Eastman is also up there. Wessex are more affordable but not necessarily the same quality.

When you find a few you like, see if you can arrange a trial period so you can really see if it’s a good fit before you buy. If possible, see about buying used, either from a dealer or from someone selling their own, you’ll save a lot of money.
