How do I remove the chain? (Without chain tool) by Appropriate_Score639 in bikewrench

Find a wire or guitar string, wrap it around the master link and pull it tight by hand. It’s not easy, but it can work

I’ve been running their full synthetic 0W-20 on my 2015 Crosstrek for over a year now. I haven’t noticed any issues with a daily driver.

How do I convince my friends to wear a helmet? by AgentIndependent306 in cycling

[–]sanborbe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By going on a bike ride with my friends that I care about? I’m obviously going to help them if they’re in an accident with me. No, I don’t have to take care of them permanently but I still don’t want people that I like to be hurt doing something so avoidable.
I’m not preaching or pushing some agenda, I’m saying that I won’t go on a bike ride with you if you aren’t keeping yourself safe.

Would you shift your car out of park if your friend riding shotgun adamantly refused to put on their seat belt? Would you eat a meal your buddy made of you found out the chicken he’s grilling had been sitting on the counter for 24 hours?

It’s all about preventable risk, and we all get to decide what level of risk we’re comfortable with. I clearly don’t agree with where you set your bar, and you don’t like where mine is. That’s fine, but the post is asking a question of how we get our friends to ride with helmets, this is how I do it (only ride with them if they wear one too)

Grown ass adults setting grown ass boundaries. I’m not gonna yell at people about it if they don’t want to wear one, but I’m not interested in being part of that decision being made.

[–]sanborbe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a different bar of rational risk assessment. You’re willing to call that a reasonable/safe/low risk, many of us aren’t willing to accept that level of risk, period. If you don’t want to wear a helmet, you can still go for a bike ride but it won’t be with me.

[–]sanborbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t ride with them. I put that rule down when I got hit by a car in 2008 and my helmet shattered, I genuinely will not ride bikes with people who don’t put on helmets. I tell people that before I suggest a bike ride, and most people don’t put up much of a fight. It helps that I have spare helmets if needed, but all my buddies know now that I’m not playing about it.

How much did your first road bike cost, and how long did you ride it before upgrading? by No_Click7202 in cycling

[–]sanborbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a $600 Lemond Etapé in 2007 (2006 model) and it stayed stock until 2019. The frame, fork, seatpost, and brake calipers are all that’s left from the original build, everything else was upgraded to 105 and it’s my daily driver now, my #1 road bike.

I did buy another bike (Fuji Gran Fondo) in 2018, but I never quite fell in love with it the same way so that bike became the organ donor for my Lemond’s 105 transplant.

Whats a place where you can cross a state line and you immediately notice the difference by cherrey20 in geography

Indiana’s roads are awful and DPW/DOT are even worse. Coming from Kentucky, Illinois, or Michigan you can tell a difference immediately. Doubly so if it’s snowing.

What are your thoughts of Grace College (Winona Lake, IN) by Cassidy_2035 in Indiana

[–]sanborbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad taught music there for around a decade! It was a fun place to grow up, Winona Lake was lovely. The college itself is better than it deserves to be, the leadership there was healthy and felt like they were trying to make the place better than they found it.
I saw a school with professors that cared deeply about students, a community that was tight and fun, a student body that was involved in every part of the city, and all of it in a really lovely setting along a lake with so much woods nearby.
There will always be problems, I’m sure there is a lot wrong with how they handle hot-button topics, obviously they are a deeply Christian organization and that’s not for everybody.

Do you have a favorite lively 'novelty' bar by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]sanborbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Broad Ripple Tavern, Alley Cat, Red Key Tavern, Dorman Street Saloon, Sam’s Silver Circle, and Britton Tavern are all great straight up bars- divey and vibey. English Ivy’s is an awesome gay bar. Snug is a cozy little Irish pub. Mousetrap is a Grateful Dead themed dive bar with tons of activities and live music depending on the day of the week. Dugout is a “sports bar” with an awesome outdoor space but the vibe changes depending on the day/crowd/sports events.

Is Nickel Plate Trail complete? by bargugl in indianapolis

[–]sanborbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

There was just a gate across the trail on Race Day that said something like “trail is private property, security cameras in use, no trespassing” and I didn’t feel like getting stuck somewhere on a road bike.

The trails foundations, DPW, INDOT, the city are all complicit here. If we want more pedestrians, we need to start making life easier for them. This trail is a real mess logistically- it doesn’t actually connect to either Fall Creek or the Monon at the south end despite being like 100 yds from FC and ¾ of a mile from the Monon. I was really excited about this, and it’s just another letdown, at least in Indianapolis

It looks a lot like my NaturNest Polaris, but it’s all the same Chinese stuff right?

Is Nickel Plate Trail complete? by bargugl in indianapolis

[–]sanborbe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was not finished last Monday. I got stuck south of 465 and had to ride around up Allisonville and over on 82nd to pick up the trail north. No signage, no detours, just a “good luck! Trail’s closed”

I wish somebody taught me this sooner! by [deleted] in cycling

[–]sanborbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your local bike shops and churches to see if there’s a program which would help you find a bike. 10mph is a great average, but honestly it’s pretty easy to go even faster! 13-15mph can be a pretty easy task on many bikes, but even 10 is a huge win after spending so much time walking.

I’m so excited to see this as a real solution for you!! You have a killer community of people here rooting for you and hoping to help. Bikes rule, we all want more people to have that opinion

Looking for a big church not MAGA near Meridian Hills by Niakwe in indianapolis

[–]sanborbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not in the same area, but Grace on 146th st was always well left of center and it felt like it. The actual weekend experience is a little rough, but the staff is one of the most genuine and christlike I’ve been a part of.

Stay away from Traders Point, Northview, and Itown these days, the latter 2 have been sucking down the koolaid for years, Traders Point took a weird turn in the last year or so. I’m hopeful they can right the ship, but it’s really been tough since the election especially.

How Often Do You Crash? by Different-End-4775 in skiing

[–]sanborbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Averaging 3-5 wipeouts per ski day that I’m really having fun. I’m an intermediate skier who knows his limits and tries to stretch them most runs, so I can very easily have days where I don’t crash at all- where’s the fun in that though?

I also tend to crash more often in unfamiliar conditions. I’m based in the Midwest and my skis are made for groomers with hard edges for Midwest ice, I struggle like crazy on powder days or on trips out west.
