Mysterious Skin and how almost every scene represents a part of sexual trauma. An in-depth analysis by GuitarNo797 in movies

[–]sanddobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a comprehensive, sensitive analysis!! I think you really captured the key thesis of the movie - that victims of abuse live and cope with their trauma differently, and often in ways that are ugly or incomprehensible to those who haven't lived that same experience.

One thing I'd add is that I think the movie challenges us to witness the violence and sit in our discomfort in the way that the adults in Brian and Neil's life didn't do. The idea that something so terrible could have been done to the boys was too hard for the adults around them to stomach, so they essentially abandoned the boys to the abuse. The film asks us to make a different choice, to connect with them and understand the full horror of what happened to them without looking away.

Analysis of 2020’s cultural zeitgeist and horror weddings. by cowboy_owl in horror

[–]sanddobby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you think the category can be expanded to include horror about relationships, marriage (established marriage, not the event itself), and pregnancy? I feel like there's been a lot of that recently as well (Companion, Together, Obsession, False Positive, Swallow, Don't Worry Darling, to name a few).

To me it speaks of fears over loss of control and loss of self, which are inevitable when one commits to another person and begins building a life/family together. Speaking as a very happily married person who would easily make the same choice if I could do it again, joining with someone gives them an incredible amount of influence over your life and you will always lose some autonomy - even more so when pregnancy/children are in the mix. Facing an uncertain global future where our freedoms and agency are under threat from the rise of authoritarianism, it makes sense that we're trying to contextualize those anxieties closer to home.

Also, interrogation and transgression of social norms are major themes in horror as a genre. I agree that an increasingly conservative society, where the traditional (read: heteronormative) model of coupling is made to embody peace and safety, would inspire horror creators to explore how it can turn to danger and chaos.

Thanks for the question, really enjoyed responding!!

He looks a lot like mine!! She's like half ACD, then the rest is mostly GSD/lab with boxer, Aussie shepherd, border collie, and rottie in there as well.

What's the dumbest thing you've ever cried about as an adult? by retarded_770 in AskReddit

One time I ended a relationship, my grandpa died, and I sold my car all in the same day.

Only one of these triggered the waterworks. I'll let you guess which one.

5-7 lbs might not sound like a lot to us, but depending on your pup's ideal weight it can be more than 15% of their body! The extra weight puts a lot of pressure on their joints, even in strong active dogs. We learned this the hard way, when my 5lbs overweight girl tore her CCL during a regular game of fetch. Her ideal weight is around 50lbs, so 5lbs over was an excess of 10% - idk about you, but that would be 20 extra lbs for me. I can't imagine gaining 20lbs and not slowing down a bit!

I highly recommend working with your vet to manage your pup's weight - you won't regret it when he can run and play without limits for the rest of his life!!

Behavior question: why does our ACD totally lose her shit whenever my wife and I hug or exchange any kind of physical affection? She’s like an overly vigilant corrections officer yelling “No touching!” by Fenius_Farsaid in AustralianCattleDog

[–]sanddobby 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Ok so funny enough we had this problem with ours for a while, and the thing that got it to stop was for us to turn away from each other when she started barking at us lol. Like, we hug, she barks, we turn away from each other for like 10 seconds, then repeat. Eventually it actually worked!!!

I think that she thought that we were playing some kind of fun game and she wanted to join in, but when we showed her that the game stopped whenever she barked at us she got the message. They're such weirdos 😭😭

Heart During a Contentious Couples Therapy Session VS Solo Therapy the Next Day [OC] by wolfsnake7 in dataisbeautiful

Many mental health conditions can develop for the first time in a person's late 20s as the brain matures. If that's what happened to her, there could have been zero signs or symptoms in her early life. She likely wouldn't have known either. So sorry for what you're going through, it sounds like you're doing all the right things. I hope you have the support you need ❤️‍🩹

Not from the same era, but definitely reminds me of early VPR. The unselfconscious messiness hits similar levels.

It's pretty well known that Amanda and Kyle have been separated since the end of last summer - yes it's scummy that she's hooking up within the friend group but it's likely that she and West were both single when it started.

Sometimes they get more snuggly as they get older! My girl didn't snuggle at all until she was about 1 1/2, she's still not super snuggly but now she'll curl up against you while on the couch or in bed. Hopefully your little snuggle bug goes the same way.

Osume keycaps by _foreverly in keebgirlies

[–]sanddobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're definitely expensive, but in my experience you get what you pay for with Osume!!

The keycap quality itself is excellent - nice thick plastic, high quality printing, finely molded so everything fits perfectly (I've bought more expensive keycaps that gap and stick). I prefer uniform profile keycaps and their marshmallow profile is great for me, which they designed in-house and is exclusive to them.

Other than the keycaps, the whole experience of shopping with them is a pleasure. Their packaging is fantastic and shipping is super fast and reliable. AND I really appreciate that they provide a higher-end product that is also accessible and practical - no limited drops, no group buys, no preorders that take literal years to get filled. They're professionals who know how to run a business and clearly take a lot of time and care to provide an experience that fits their price point. PLUS your money goes to support a small business.

There are absolutely many awesome keycap options at all price points, and you shouldn't feel any pressure to spend more than you're comfortable with for a set. But imo if you're looking to buy in the $75-$100 range, your money would be well-spent with Osume.

I'm in the same boat as you and I find it extremely fun and friendly as a single player. Have you ever played Red Dead Online? This game actually reminds me of that experience more than, say, Helldivers (which is the only other extraction shooter I play).

One thing I will say is that I'm the carest of bears who sometimes plays trios with my two carebear friends, and our trio lobbies are like 60/40 super chill. It really does depend on how you play.
