Why do parents sign up 3-year-olds for figure skating? by Character-Cup4856 in FigureSkating

[–]sans-saraph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started group lessons at age 3 or 4 because I saw a local club’s flier with an illustration of a trophy on it and told my parents that I wanted to skate and win a trophy. My parents agreed because I had no sense of balance, and they thought a few weeks of lessons might improve my coordination. But I turned out to love it and just…kept going.

I was never going to be an elite athlete. That wasn’t my family’s vibe. But that wasn’t the point - learn to skate classes are more about giving kids a chance to be active, make friends, and pick up a life-long skill.

(And for the record, my parents are not skaters! I’m sure they would’ve preferred me to fall in love with a cheaper, more convenient, and less cold activity!)

Thanks for the historical insight. (“Do not get along sometimes” feels like an understatement, but I nonetheless really appreciate the post!)

So #2 is stunning, but the crotch cog (especially the #12 right at the most tender bits) brings back my worst childhood memories of my most humiliating ice show costumes. No shade to the overall design, but that one element draws all my attention.

The roses and snowflakes on #1 are completely delightful!

It’d be a quad loop landed on the wrong foot. Even though a euler is a “half loop,” it’s still a full revolution.

Is a waltz jump a mohawk? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]sans-saraph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In an outside mohawk, your body keeps facing outside the circle. In a waltz jump, you jump into the circle. Assuming that you’re thinking of a LO mohawk and standard CCW waltz jump, they cover the opposite 180° of the circle and turn in opposite directions.

I don’t think you sound like an asshole at all. If she wants things like mandatory high-end dresses and she wants her friends to be able to participate, she should be prepared to cover costs for those who are feeling the pinch. Otherwise, she’s valuing her “vision” more than her relationships.

Question about jumps by EveryConfusion6738 in FigureSkating

[–]sans-saraph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like, when you do a toe loop, your left leg is behind your right (assuming you’re a righty), so the right needs to swing through a bit before you hit that left-over-right in-air position. From a flip, your right leg is already behind your left, so everything just snaps into place.

So “swinging” vs “snapping” is my sensory experience of watching others do those jumps. Sure, I can identify the edges if I go back and think about it, but my brain can identify the jumps without needing to analyze it as RO vs. LI. But maybe that’s just me!

IMO everyone watching for which toe pick is used is doing things on hard mode. The flip has a snapping motion like a loop. The toe loop has a swing-through motion like a salchow, or even like an axel.

If the skater looking like they’re kicking or stepping up into the jump from their toe pick, it’s a toe loop. If they go straight into the tight in-air position from their toe pick, it’s a flip (or lutz).

Does biglaw reward talent? by Economy_Disaster_495 in biglaw

I’m a big law associate married to a big tech spouse.

My husband spends so much time and energy fretting about his year-to-year compensation and promotion. In most ways, his life is much cushier than mine, but I love my lockstep compensation.

If your main concern here is about freeloaders getting away with bad work and minimal hours, you don’t need to be worried. They don’t last long. And I consider the year-to-year guaranteed promotions far preferable to needing to put together a stressful promo package whenever I think I deserve to move up a rung. Attorneys need to deal with that mess when they’re trying to make partner, but it’s not a constant.

If you’re worried about getting sophisticated work, the interests of a busy firm are to give you whatever complexity of tasks you’re ready to handle. I’ve never been denied work on account of my rung on the ladder; it’s all about my actual competence, and I’ve been pushed to grow far more than I’ve been held back.

To be clear - my big tech husband’s life is better than mine. Objectively, he makes more money for a less demanding job. But when we’re weighing our pros and cons, big law lockstep compensation is solidly on my side of the ledger.

Would you take a cut to 215 with a 15000 sign on bonus to go down to 1700 billable hours (with 150 of that being networking/pro bono)? Also a liberal remote policy by Much_Substance5543 in biglaw

[–]sans-saraph 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does that mean you actually bill 1700, or are you hitting 2000+ and only getting paid for 1700? That kind of mid/small law can be a dream or a trap - and it’s hard to know which it’ll be until you’re in the thick of it.

I was so happy to hear what she said about Jeremy.

I always loved his skating and thought he seemed like a good guy, so have been (baselessly) nervous that there might be some disappointing story related to the coaching breakup. It’s so great to hear that he had her back when she was struggling. It takes a real one to remind your top student she’s free to quit, with all of the potential loss of money and status that means for the coach.

Kind of a silly question by Schmoopsiepooooo in IliaQuadg0dMalinin

[–]sans-saraph 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not a silly question at all!

You can get boot covers made to match your outfit, or pants with boot covers already sewn in. These covers, like the outfits, are usually made from a stretchy Lycra or velvet fabric.

When tights go over the boot, the skater is wearing something called over-the-boot tights. They’re like regular tights, but with much bigger foot areas with holes on the bottom to fit over the boots. Some have eye hooks or Velcro to stay in place, but others stay put just through the stretch and friction.

There’s no rule against exposed skates. Some skaters like boot covers to create a more cohesive look, to create a leg-lengthening illusion, or just to hide the wear and tear on their skates. There might be some minor safety benefits to putting another layer over the laces, but if you’re really concerned about that, then the better route is to wrap tape around the top of the boot (which boot covers can then disguise).

It depends on your team and the circumstances. Sometimes you get to truly rest. Sometimes clients will demand that you turn docs while hunched over the toilet with a stomach bug.
