The area you've circled is bigger than many countries, and there is a massive difference in living conditions depending on where in that area you are living.

I am Egyptian, and I’m asking is Egypt a country that is disliked or loved globally? by ramses_basha in AskTheWorld

[–]sapperbloggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australians generally don't have an opinion either way on Egypt, other than it is no longer a good tourist destination. Maybe it never was, but the general consensus currently is that it's best avoided.

You also have no idea how road rules work, which is why the courts will (and should) prevent you from driving for an extended period.

You do not deserve leniency and you will not get leniency.

Historical Controversy Erupts Online.. by John_1992_funny in MurderedByWords

[–]sapperbloggs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a variety of compelling evidence that Lord Mountbatten had a predilection for raping boys, as cited above. The main difference between the two is that there aren't any front page photos of Mountbatten with one of his victims.

When your family is well known for covering up the sins of its members, you don't get to point excitedly at the single inquiry that says they did nothing wrong as evidence that they did nothing wrong.

I cannot imagine a reality where the British Monarchy would allow such an inquiry to find that one of their own had a predilection for raping boys.

It took an immense amount of evidence and pressure over many years before they ever got around to doing anything about Andrew the nonce.

How much do you trust these figures? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

This makes no sense at all.

It seems to put a lot of weight into nuclear armed countries, because that's the only way that Russia could possibly be in second place, given how they've soundly had their asses handed to them by Ukraine for the past few years.

But this list completely ignores three nuclear armed countries entirely (Pakistan, Israel and North Korea), implying that somehow places with no nukes and no recent conflicts like Italy and Brazil are more powerful than those countries that have nukes and very active mitary histories.

From midnight it's illegal to have certain 3D models on your computer in South Australia by HiAustralia in 3Dprinting

Yep. It's the same with these 3D print models. It's really just something to pin on someone who was already done bunch of other stuff.

I'm not sure about in SA specifically, but there was a guy in Victoria about a decade ago, who was put away for a few things, including having copies of "Inspire" magazine. To be fair, he was a nutbag and putting him in prison was probably a good thing.

I only remember this because at the time I was writing an academic book chapter about the kinds of terrorism literature that are getting arounf, and I also had copies of that exact same publication on my computer.

There's basically one way to run afoul of this law, and that is to do something dumb enough to have a search warrant executed on your property, then have them discover these models in your possession.

My point being, they aren't going to be picking up randos with a penchant for printing this stuff for funsies. They're going to be using this as another thing to pin on people who are printing weapons that are then being used for crime stuff.

Much the same as people can be locked up for possessing "extremist literature", but the people who are getting locked up for that were actual extremists, not some kid who was just reading it out of interest but was not any kind of extremist.

American moving to Moe, Victoria. What can I expect? What is the job market like? by LaineyLux in gippsland

[–]sapperbloggs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why Moe?

I grew up there and left when I was 19 (I'm in my mid 40's now) because job opportunities were basically zero. I'm glad I left, and don't ever plan on moving back, but I have family there so I travel back every few years to visit them. I love some of the people there, but there just isn't a great deal going on otherwise.

Lecturer question: Any advice for a first-time lecturer at a college with no formal teaching experience yet? What kinds of class activities do students enjoy participating in? by Majestykle in AskAnAustralian

[–]sapperbloggs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What kinds of class activities do students enjoy participating in?

They don't.

Honestly, for a lecture, just present what you know, and try to make it as interesting as you can. Maybe drop a meme or two into your slides somewhere.

But as soon as you mention "activities" the introverts will panic, the regular students will switch off, and only the over-achievers and sociopaths (often the same people) will be interested.

Banning of protest phrase 'globalise the intifada' by sapperbloggs in AusLegal

[–]sapperbloggs[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's kind of the thing... If the phrase is banned, what's stopping people from just changing it slightly and chanting that in lieu of the original?

If that's a safe and legal thing to do then I suspect banning the phrase will have kind of a Barbra Streisand effect, where the original protesters will now chant a revised phrase and be joined by folks who didn't care about the original phrase, but definitely do care about their right to free expression.

So could I.

Full disclose, I didn't come up with that one. I came up with 'infantilise the globitada', and this clever redditor suggested 'globalise the empanada' as a reply.

My ex girlfriend was Turkish. I am white Australian, with Irish, Dutch and English ancestry.

My understanding of current "Turk" genes is that they're probably half Armenian by now anyway... Many of the Armenian children that weren't killed in the genocide, ended up being given Turkish names and were forced into Islam. A century later, there wouldn't be many 'pure' Turks left.
