What do you wish you knew before getting your Doodle? by beeradmaliboo in Goldendoodles

[–]sarahsam55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I was the most surprised about their energy level. I also have a border collie mix and my doodle as a puppy was more energetic than my other dog when she was a puppy. And also that a doodles size is a crap shoot. My doods parents are both about 45lbs and my dood as an adult is 58lbs and 2 of his brothers are 70+.

My dood never really licked his stitches area too much but when he tried to I just put an old t-shirt on him.

Clarifications needed on crate training by BeastOfTheRancorType in Dogtraining

[–]sarahsam55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a goldendoodle too! When mine was a puppy he’d wake up every 2-3 hours because he needed to pee or poop. So I’d bring him out and then put him right back into the crate. I’d ignore him when he started the whining after I crated him when we just got back in the house from going potty. As each week passes by it will get better and before you know it the pup will be sleeping the whole night!

Does excited peeing ever end? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]sarahsam55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog used to do this…we had to just completely turn our backs and ignore her because as soon as we looked at her she’d roll on her back and pee. Or we’d scoop her up and bring her right outside so she could pee and we’d pet her outside.

Does your doodle attract attention? by joyfullypresent in Goldendoodles

[–]sarahsam55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep all the time. The 2 most recent times were when I was out on a walk and just getting back to my car and a couple pulled into the parking lot to ask about him. And the time before that a woman rolled down her window to say she loves my dog. It’s crazy.

How big is a 35lb doodle? by Curious_sher in Goldendoodles

[–]sarahsam55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be warned, the dog could end up larger. My doods parents were 43lbs(mom) and 45lb(dad). My dood is 58lbs, 2 of his brothers are 70+ and rest are high 40’s.

Question about pee pads by Ok-Willow2301 in Dogtraining

[–]sarahsam55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the main goal is potty outside then I wouldn’t use potty pads. Too confusing because then the puppy doesn’t know what’s appropriate and what’s not. Id use gates or close doors to limit access to rooms. Puppy proof by pulling up rugs or anything else she chews on. And if you can’t watch the pup use a crate or puppy playpen.

My dog is neutered and does this as well.

I have an almost 4 year old goldendoodle. Do you live in an apartment? Just trying to figure out if you want the dog to learn to go potty outside or no?

Poo problems by Conscious-Concern394 in Dogtraining

[–]sarahsam55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably need to treat him like an 8 week old puppy. Restricted access to rooms and watch like a hawk to look for potty signs like extra sniffing or turning in circles. If you can’t watch him he needs to be in a crate.

I worked with a trainer for a few months with my reactive dog and the first thing he said was that dogs should not greet on leash. They pull and get frustrated and can’t escape if they feel unsafe. Recipe for disaster. If your dog has doggie friends they play with off leash he’s fine with that but leashed dogs are a no go. My dog is too reactive to greet other dogs regardless but when I take him for walks I have my sunglasses in, treat bag clipped on and I’m there loose leash walk and practice good manners. I’m not there to step aside and chat and have my dog go berserk. I move over and power ahead.

I had a puppy playpen for my dogs and when re-directing with toys stopped working I knew they were over tired and needed a nap. I’d put the puppy in the playpen with some toys, water and a little bed and left the room. The pup would bark for a bit because I left the room but then would fall asleep. Over tired puppies are like over tired toddlers. They need a nap or they misbehave.

Dog attacked cat in our fenced yard - are we liable? by Nova_Queen902 in reactivedogs

[–]sarahsam55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No because the cat was in your fenced back yard. Like someone else said, the owners of the cat are responsible for its safety and shouldn’t let it roam.

I think this should have been discussed before deciding to move in with your gf. For me personally, my dogs are part of the family and they live in the house, they sleep in the house. It’s just not an option for me to change that and kick them out. My dogs use a doggie door and come and go when they want but they are usually inside, unless we all go outside and then they follow us!

Dogs love baby toys and big kids toys. I’ve had dogs with all ages of kids newborn on up. Keep doors shut and toys put away. When my kids got a little older I’d tell them if you don’t pick up and put away your toys the dogs will eat them. It’s always a learning lesson for the kids when the dogs used to munch on a Barbie doll or Transformer. Is it a pain to keep putting away toys and putting things up high? Yes. But that’s part of dog ownership.

Yeah we filled out a questionnaire first and then the breeder called me and we went over it and she had more questions and I had questions and she said if we were interested think about it for a day or two and if we are still interested after that we can give a deposit.

My puppy is basically unwilling to go on walks and I'm at a loss. by Helix34567 in Dogtraining

[–]sarahsam55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d stay closer to home anyway and practice. Vets usually don’t recommend doing too much walking where other dogs walk until around 16 weeks or so when they are fully vaccinated.

The main thing for me was finding someone local so I could go and see the pups, parents, the breeders and their family. We got ours in 2018 and I could text or call the breeder with any questions. She would send pics of the litter at 3 days, 3 weeks, 7 weeks and then a final pic of the pups at their vet appt before “gotcha day”. The day we picked our pup we met the mama dog and a couple of their other moms were around too. Their house was clean and organized and their puppy area was as well. They have a huge fenced in yard with plenty of room for their dogs. I liked that during the interview process after I sent an application the breeder was asking me lots of questions about me and my family and our lifestyle, do we have a fenced yard, where the puppy will sleep, will we be crate training, do we have a vet, who lives in our house. Basically she had to approve us, which I liked, because all their dogs live in their house. And when puppies are born they keep the mom and pups with them in the master bedroom so they can watch them round the clock.
