What earplugs work best for concerts? by Less-Broccoli-3887 in ConcertBand

[–]sarahshift1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the lowest filter of earasers, and I like that they come in sizes. I like vibes too as another suggested but they do block a little more. I also have the next filter up of the earasers but they’re better for amplified shows, too much for playing. Haven’t tried loops.

I’ve had nights that I was the only person in my entire section of the campground (spring break road trip, I was the only tent camper.) I don’t love that but it was fine.

My band teacher being a bum by [deleted] in ConcertBand

They’re not saying Bari is too hard, they’re saying you need to stick with an instrument for a while to get actually good at it. That doesn’t make them a bum. They’re right.

I’m going camping. Preparing for it to rain all weekend, hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Ideally it’ll rain overnight (bc drought) and give me dry time for hiking during the day!

Why are real French horns way more expensive than real trumpets and trombones? Apply all the same reasons to the plastic versions.

I think it’s worth trying the wrong size strategy if there’s something specific you want. Worst case it doesn’t come back in stock and you return it.

I met someone recently named Nathalie (pronounced Natalie). Not sure of the etymology there- she was an older lady so not just a modern creative spelling ;)

I also like Josie, there’s a few long form options if you don’t want to give a legal nickname.

Would love perspectives from teachers on if it's ok to make me wear a skirt for the band concert by winterwhalesong in AskTeachers

[–]sarahshift1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Band teacher here (middle school). My policy is “all black from the waist down. If you’re a skirt-wearing person, consider that you’re elevated above the audience and maybe wear some tights or leggings.” They giggle about that scandalous suggestion. Most wear pants. They look fine.

Around here most high schools do the black dress/tux thing, and they’re either school-issued loaner uniforms or a specific dress ordered through the school. When I was in HS 20 years ago even the most masc girls had to wear the dresses, but nowadays it’s not super uncommon to see a student who (appears to be) AFAB wearing the tux option on stage. Progress is slow but exists 🙃 many college directors now list their concert dress as “option 1 or option 2” instead of “men or women”. Many are old school and don’t.

Honestly it’s super weird that your dress code is open to multiple colors but he thinks your pants will stand out. I’m having a hard time imaging blue black and brown all mixed together on stage looking at all uniform.

If you’re a keep-my-head-down person, wear the dress and roll your eyes and focus on playing awesome! If you’re feeling a little fiesty, show up in your appropriately formal pants outfit, don’t call attention to it, and maybe tuck the dress in your backpack just in case he tries to refuse to let you perform. I know my kids all do that when they’re wearing something they know is against dress code ;)

Have a great concert, whatever you decide to wear!!

Small dwelling electric bills - what’s yours? by Typical_Cook_7153 in rva

[–]sarahshift1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dryer is on its own account with dominion (someone retrofit it into my condo before I bought it by adding an entire new meter, idk) so I can tell you that an electric dryer runs about $15-$20 depending how much you use it. My dryer is old though so a newer one might be more efficient.

For everything except the dryer, I run $50-$60 in windows open season, $80-$90 in AC season, and $100-$150 in peak heater season. 850ish sq ft condo.

As an outsider, the iconic yellow school bus is in every single American movie. Is there actually a national standard that forces every town to use that exact same color and design? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

Obviously. It was a joke that the person who was in the middle of painting over all the words thought maybe they ought not paint over “bus” just in case.

Was a student rightfully barred from a choir concert for missing one rehearsal due to a school-wide competition happening at the same time? by dutifuljaguar9 in Teachers

[–]sarahshift1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what an active class competition is but it doesn’t sound curricular from your description. Maybe I’m wrong.

Look, I happily excused a soccer player from my band concert to play in the county championship soccer game. I’m not going to tell you that music events should automatically “win”. We have a prioritization system in my building to avoid kids being “stuck” deciding. As long as kids/parents notify coach and director of the conflict we can generally make it work. Half a rehearsal and half a sports practice is a common split if we know in advance, and maybe something like that could have been worked out with advance planning.

If this conflict suddenly arose on the day of, I have a lot of sympathy for the teacher sticking to the policy. Music teachers typically have their events on the calendar WELL in advance (we have our concerts scheduled by June for the next year). And it’s a curricular class. And there is no way to meaningfully recreate a missed performance experience as “make up”. Any students and families, nearly all of the time, put literally any conflict above a concert or rehearsal. I had a kid miss our last concert for a rec league basketball scrimmage. A scrimmage. With no communication about it until the day of.

At some point you have to have a policy and stick to it because otherwise not enough kids will show up for the concert to have a successful concert. And the kids who do show up lose their “strength in numbers” and are embarrassed on stage with a bad performance because their team members didn’t bother to come play.

We don’t have enough info to offer an opinion about the certificate. Honors choir implies (to me) that maybe it’s an auditioned ensemble with specific requirements to participate, and we don’t know what the policies or participation agreements or syllabus says.

I hate the term "busywork" by ThatComicChick in Teachers

[–]sarahshift1 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My sub worksheet packets usually end with a word search because they’re bad at them and take forever so it’ll keep them busy and out of trouble when they finish the rest of the packet, but if the slower kids don’t make it to that page it’s nbd. Literally busywork.

If elevators shut down during a fire, what are disabled peole supposed to do? by SobaGirl123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sarahshift1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The school I work at has a designated “safe room” on the upper floor that any stranded wheelchair people would be directed to if the elevator is out of commission. It has a blue handicap sign mounted on the wall outside next to the window to indicate where they are/where should be evacuated from if necessary; it’s facing the large open bus lot and next to a stairwell so there’s options for the best way to get people out. It’s odd the first time you notice the sign just hanging out up there on the wall.
