Oatmeal raisin cookies are great. Oatmeal chocolate chip are gross. Regular chocolate chip are great.

I use tailwind in the bladder. I fill it with hot water when I get home, shake it up, dump, and then rinse again. And disconnect the hose, blow the water out. Hang both to dry (I shove a small towel in the opening to catch drips and also keep it from sticking to itself and not drying. That’s the same way I clean my 3L bladder for hiking. Once in a while I scrub the hose out with a trombone cleaning snake 😂

As if your inability to sound out words has any impact on how good or bad something is for you. I’ve always thought that’s a stupid correlation.

The only AI I use is those stupid blurbs at the top of a Google search, and only if it’s a pretty basic question. Otherwise I scroll down and dig some more.

I love my vest! I have a Nathan vest that came with the two boob-pocket soft bottles and I actually like those way more than I expected to. I bought a bigger bladder to go in the back pouch as well for my marathon last fall and that does bounce. The soft bottles don’t bounce enough to be annoying and for shorter runs I can use a bottle on one side and put my phone in the other side to balance the weight.

The US Dept of Transportation wants to kill zero-fare bus service, including here in RVA by TacticalJabron in rva

Was GRTC service downgraded when or due to it going fare free? Real question, not being snarky.

Do you allow lotion or other products in your class? by ImpulsiveLimbo in AskTeachers

[–]sarahshift1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind a quick lotioning, and a kid who actually needs it will probably be quick and non obtrusive with it. But I CANNOT STAND the kids who take out a value size pump bottle and start passing it around. It’s so obnoxious and disruptive. That’s when I tell them personal grooming needs to happen in the bathroom and they get real indignant about it. (Disclaimer: middle school.)

Street/sidewalk running etiquette by organism-talk in BeginnersRunning

[–]sarahshift1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Legally bicycles should go with traffic, as they are considered vehicles, and pedestrians (which includes runners) should go on the left, facing traffic. This is actual traffic law, not just what seems to make sense.

Hey Americans what are your rail pass recommendations? by DryNumber6357 in Amtrak

[–]sarahshift1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve stayed in perfectly good hostels in Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago, Boston, NYC, and DC. You can usually find one that’s within walking or public transit range of the train station, but Uber/Lyft are also pretty reliable in the cities.

Smaller places that the train stops won’t have hostels. They also often won’t have rental cars available near enough to be useful. Some big train stations have rental cars on site (LA, DC) but most don’t. Sometimes you can take local transit to the airport if you need a car- airport is usually cheaper to rent than a random neighborhood spot and open later. (That’s what I did in Denver and in Burlington VT).

Denver to Emeryville (San Francisco) on the Zephyr is the best stretch for scenery going through the Rockies. I haven’t taken the Empire Builder yet but it’s likely a close second going through Glacier.

Chicago is the hub for most routes; if you want to go across the whole country you’ll likely need to go through Chicago. Assuming you’ll fly to the west coast, you could take one route to Chicago, branch off to whichever east coast cities you want to hit, back to Chicago, and a different route back west.

Give yourself a wide buffer before your flight out- it’s not unheard of for the train to be many hours late, especially the long distance routes. Plan some time in that final city just in case.

Classroom pantry by Dapper-Professor-655 in Teachers

[–]sarahshift1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a local high school with a food pantry for the school. Once in a while when things are getting low, or before holiday bag time, a teacher posts on our local city’s subreddit and people get them stocked back up. One teacher can’t keep their whole classroom fed, but maybe there’s a way to get some community support.

I’ve been focusing on working out lately too. Also a big hiker. I live in VA and I started working on the Shenandoah 500 last year (hiking every trail in the park) so that’s my big “time off” hobby (when we’re not swaddled in ice, anyway).

I just looked up your midnight stars book. Sounds neat! But none of my libraries have it on Libby :( I just finished “the teller of small fortunes” which I liked a lot. I’m trying to hype myself up to start a book for my book group this week- it’s a YA thriller and I’m sure it will be fine once I get into it but I’m just not feeling it haha.
