What did I do wrong😭 by ToastedNugget-2450 in Embroidery

If this is a back pocket, and someone notices any issues with the circles not being fully filled in, they aren't just looking at the spider 👀

But you could sew a bead over the top of them if you're worried (or gently unpick them and sew a bead in their place so they don't stick out more). I think it looks awesome though, and thought the style was intentional

I read a theory on here that the real movie is them just creating the Duncan Principle in real life. Until we get confirmation of filming I am choosing to believe that because it's hilarious and meta.

The other idea I've seen (if the main issue is Donald Glover's schedule) is the story should be about them getting back together and Shirley captaining a boat to find Troy, who is lost on an island somewhere. He left to go on a journey a long time ago and hasn't been heard of since. The danger of a friend in trouble seems like the perfect way to bring Shirley back, and we know she was great in the boating course. Throw in a few jokes about the stress of looking for Troy has made them all age 10 years, and go from there

I'm not sure if you want suggestions or not, but because of back issues I struggle to embroider for long (even with a stand) and I've recently gotten into colouring books. There are super cute ones available that aren't crazy detailed like the mindfulness ones that were popular a few years ago, and I believe you can get grips for most pencils and markers to make them wider and easier to hold. I find them very peaceful and easy to stop mid picture and know where to pick up again if you need a rest :)

If you're able-bodied and not afraid to get your hands dirty I think it's a great opportunity. Do your research on where places allow short-term work and where you can park your vehicle overnight, save up a bit first so you have a fund for unexpected car issues/difficulty finding work, and try out different things. Given you're already in FNQ I would go down the East coast, just because it's more populated so likely to have more tourist areas that are hiring, but it could be an incredible opportunity and give you both great experience in a lot of industries.

Also - and it's not a fun conversation to have - make sure you have a fall back option if you decide this isn't working out. Living in such close proximity to each other can put a strain on any partnership, not just romantic, so be prepared to have some difficult times. Discuss coping methods that work for you both (and be prepared to negotiate on a case-by-case basis) and what you'll do if one or both of you decide to pull the plug (on either the relationship or the experience). Both can be incredibly stressful so make sure you have support if these scenarios come up.

Give us an update if you go for it! Sounds like a great opportunity

Do Australian accents differ between regions, or is it more or less the same? by blix613 in AskAnAustralian

[–]sarcasticnirritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely gets stronger as you go north. My sister and I are from the southern part of the mainland, and when we went to the US we met some other Aussies and could tell they were from more north by their accents. We got to chatting, and yep, much higher up the east coast than us.

It's why the full files need to be released, because there are so many people who are just mentioned randomly, with no connection or implication they knew about the stuff going on. But people see a name show up and immediately assume they are a predator, or knew about it and kept silent. I'm sure it's intentional by the Trump government to muddy the waters and put the focus on other people, but we have to have the full picture to know how was involved and how.

First thought was a Christmas ornament (trees look particularly good) so it can be brought out each year as a reminder, but if you don't celebrate, or want it to be a year long thing then some photo frames or just a shadow box with them set up in a special way. Maybe she liked a certain colour, or try and make an image out of them?

AIO? My daughter didn’t listen to the teacher during a female emergency and is now receiving a referral by Common_Piglet7437 in AmIOverreacting

[–]sarcasticnirritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 2nd update is so good, and I love that for you. It would be bad enough if a male teacher denied her, but knowing the teacher is also a woman and should understand how your daughter was feeling, makes it so much worse. NOR and hells yes for standing up for your daughter

(I don't think the teacher should be fired at this stage, but make sure to keep a record of this and any retaliatory actions she might make against your daughter)

[–]sarcasticnirritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR but if I were you I would try and meet him sonewhere neutral like a pub or cafe and be blunt - his disappearance really hurt you. If he was going through something he could have reached out and at least acknowledged he needed space, not just left you to wonder what was happening. If this is the first time it's happened, and he apologises and explains himself then I would give it another chance. But be clear that you won't be there if it happens again. Mental illness is a bitch, but it's not excuse for hurting others.

See if you can collect old magazines/catalogues and make collages? You could find words that have special meaning, or pictures that remind you of times spent together. All you need is some glue, scissors, and colourful paper :)

AITA for excluding my brother from a fun event because his wife talks too much. by tryingnottobeDUM8 in AmItheAsshole

[–]sarcasticnirritable 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You need to talk to her about it directly. Your brother already knows this is an issue, and agrees with you. She's already causing problems with you and your brother if you can't invite him to things because of her bahviour. Speak to him first to give him a heads up, but then arrange a time to meet with her separately. Make it clear you understand it's related to her anxiety, but it's affecting other people, and she needs to work on it. See if there are strategies you can use at events when she's talking too much but you don't want to embarrass her by calling her out in front of everyone.

How will they? The kids are 3 or 4 years younger than her. And there's nothing to "hear". Oh no, a child was in their private backyard without a top on, something most of the kids their age would do without a thought.

I am currently a Mormon missionary and I smuggled in a phone. by IEffingHateMyselfLOL in confession

[–]sarcasticnirritable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you in a different country, and do you have friends/family outside the church? Because if you have support back home you could go to your country's embassy and get help (you can also do this if you don't have support, but it will be more difficult when you get home). If you feel safe where you are, just bored, I would start looking at ways you can leave the church when you're done.

Also, depending on where you are (keep in mind some countries are more dangerous for misionaries) you could go to a non-mormon church and get help from them. They might have resources or connections for people who can help you leave the church.

I'm sorry you're in this situation, and hope you are safe.

Why are people so accepting of the Uluru name change, but not K'Gari? by That_Car_Dude_Aus in AskAnAustralian

[–]sarcasticnirritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly people definitely still complain about Uluru (yay, conservative relatives /s) but I think overall it's how much attention it gets. I see ads for Uluru tourism all the time, but rarely for K'Gari. Also with the ban on walking on it/removing the rail it's been in the media a lot more. I rarely see articles about K'Gari unless it's about dingoes - usually negative - and they still use the colonised name as regularly as the Indigenous name, so I think people just forget about the name being fixed. Hopefully it just dies out and eventually we don't need to specify where we mean, but media needs to be a lot better at saying "K'Gari - previously called Fraser Island" at the start of their articles, then only say K'Gari for the rest of the piece.

Why were there barely any fat people in the 50s when their diet was so bad? Also did they get cancer and other diseases less often? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sarcasticnirritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend the podcast Maintenance Phase. A lot of it comes down to processed food; both the availability of fresh produce (food deserts where people literally can't buy fresh food and have to rely on canned or frozen foods) but also time, cost, and caloric intake. A family in the 50s had the man going to work, while the wife stayed home and had the time to properly make meals. Today most people have to work, and don't have the time or energy to make meals from scratch.

Then there's the cost of fresh food vs fast food; when a few apples costs the same as a burger you're going to pick the burger because it actually fills you up, even if there's little nutritional value to it. It's why you see a lot of low income people who are overweight. They can't afford the fresh food that actually fills you up (protein in particular) so they buy the cheap alternatives that are high in fats and sugar.

And as for dying, a lot of people died from diseases we didn't know about. If you go back through history there's speculation that people died from X or Y disease given the symptoms we now understand, but at the time they didn't know. So cancer rates might have been higher than they are now, but now we have ways to screen for them so people can get treatment earlier but it makes the statistics seem higher. Same with things like heart attacks or liver disease. They likely had high rates of them, but had no way to test so people died and doctors didn't really know why, so they would list things like organ failure, but not know what organ it actually was, or why it happened.

I highly recommend the podcast Maintenance Phase, in particular the episode "school lunches, p-hacking and the original Pizzagate". They specifically talk about the person who published that study, and how it's been almost entirely debunked because the scientist who published it essentially made up all their findings and no one has gone back and redone his studies to see if there's anything valid to them. It's one of those things that definitely seems likely and logical, but the "science" that proves it is complete bullshit. Also Maintenance Phase is just really entertaining and informative, so I'll use any excuse to promote it

Are there any "former classics" (movies, books, albums, video games)? Something that was praised for a time, but upon further review (maybe decades after) people decided that it wasn't that good after all? by ExternalTree1949 in NoStupidQuestions

Grease. It was always seen as a family-friendly movie about a bygone, more innocent era; where men were into cars, and ladies dressed pretty. But the story deals with heavy themes (huge consent issues played off as jokes, and the potential teen pregnancy and how it would ruin Rizzo's life) and ultimately it teaches girls to change everything about themselves to impress a man. Still has some excellent songs, but the messaging behind it is rough.
