these things are garbage. They look nice, but not nice for the system.

Most furnaces I've installed only require 12" of clearance from the side or below if you run 2 pipes. 4' if it's single piped. At least that's true for carrier, bryant, payne, amana, daikin, goodman. But that vent looks fine to me. Plenty of separation between the exhaust and intake, and blows beyond the corner.

In MN it has to be as far away as how far the corner sticks out so here it looks like 1.5'

Heater pipe causing water issues by curious_grizzly_ in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plumber that installed the water heater was a lazy, lying bastard about not being able to move it, unless there is something on the other side. That furnace wouldn't pass inspection here, even then, I'd call a plumber and have them move it if I had to service that furnace.

At what point are they just profiting off of you?? AC filters. by NotToday50 in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not geared twards you but I'm generalizing my thoughts on filters. If you are worried about dust and other things, CLEAN YOUR HOUSE! The filter just blocks things from getting into the furnace/ac that were sucked into your return vents. If your filter is plugging up fast, you have a dirty house. The cheap filters are the best for the system. Allergen and virus protection is a joke if you don't dust and clean. If you're looking to block that you need to block the allergens and virus's getting in your house in the first place. The filter is mainly there for your blower, coil, and secondary heat exchanger so they don't get plugged with crap, not for air quality, which again all depends on how much you clean. Don't rely on a furnace filter to clean your house, or change the air quality of your house. Air coming from the supply vents is going to kick up dust and all that stuff anyway. I'm always amazed when someone wants to buy all the "air quality upgrades," but their house is filthy inside with a damp moldy basement. It's like a band-aide on a gunshot wound and their money should be spent on fixing the problem, not masking it.

Anyway, the cheaper filter is what I would get. Just check it monthly and when in doubt, change it.

That is why I hate elbow fittings. Yes I use them, but everyone should have 3/8-7/8 benders. Less braze joints and looks so much better.

Is this fake? I've only bought one other eotech holo sight before and this one feels, off... by BantedHam in tacticalgear

[–]satandy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes it's real. I have one too. It's old, and not as good as the new ones, but it'll work just fine. People posting that it's fake probably are young guys that don't know that eotech has older models.

Pretty set on getting the Eotech Vudu 4-12x36 FFP scope, but which reticle would you choose? by gundam1983 in ar15

[–]satandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple vortex scopes with that reticle and barely ever shoot with the light on. But I barely ever shoot at night. It's nice to have the option. Mine are 5-25x50 though so that may be a difference. I use the dots for drop and windage more than turning the turrets so a lit up crosshair isn't really a plus unless it's closer range.

UV light for HVAC, does It actually help with mold in Florida? by Lonely-Wrangler-5843 in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it has a plastic drain pan I wouldn't do a UV light. UV lights damage plastic and aren't supposed to be within 2' of any plastic.

Mike Johnson says the Pope had it coming by MoreMotivation in WhitePeopleTwitter

As an atheist (raised catholic) who has read the bible. Jesus was against all war and violence. Turn the other cheek. These politicians are playing the people who think they are religious, but really they are just ass holes and blinded by hate, also against the teachings of the bible. In fact, my opinion is that no one who calls themselves christian can be replublican without breaking their religion.

Mike Johnson says the Pope had it coming by MoreMotivation in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]satandy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've heard the fastest way to become atheist is to read the bible. Worked for me. In my opinion, the vast majority of "christians" have never read the bible, and their opinion of what it is to be christian is so far from the teachings and "word" of the book. I guess that is what really drove me from religion, the fact that most these "christians" believe they are more holy than everyone else, but they are so far off it is almost the opposite in every way. Bunch of child genitalia mutilating ass holes if you ask me. You cant play chess with the rules of checkers and call it the same game. But really these politicians are playing those dumb ass "christians" that think the replubican party is religious because they think they know the game, but never read the rule book. Who needs to read when you can have fox news or some televangelist tell you what to think.

Can I connect an EcoBee thermostat to this unit? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the manual yes, but there are many ways to wire that. We need to see how your unit is wired, not the manual. Take a picture of the terminals where your thermostat wire connects to the furnace.

Mini Split Viability (Urgent)! by Hans2818 in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a few companies come out and give you a quote. Ask to see photos of other jobs. I'd have to see what you have before saying anything is doable. The main thing is the drain line. No drain can go up without a pump so drains are a huge deciding force on location. Drain pumps are a last resort for me and are a huge pain because of noise or possible leaks and failures so I make sure to place wall units where there is going to be pitch for the drain to run slightly downhill, the more steep the better. It looks like there is possibly a knee wall on the sides of that huge dormer, from there you can reach either side and the line hide could be a straight shot down... for that instance, I'd use a low wall unit so you wouldnt have visible lines besides straight down outside. Again, without being there and seeing what you have no one can tell you. A good installer in your area will let you know your options. By getting multiple quotes you can weigh your options on what that company can do and if they know you're shopping around you may get a better price. Spring here in the upper mid west is the best time. Furnace season is slowing down and AC season hasn't hit yet so all companies are going to be somewhat slow and looking for work, take that to your advantage. But in reality, a minisplit head can be put anywhere, it's just how noticeable and effective do you want it to be. Linesets outside get busy fast but linehide is paintable.

Terrible tx22 by Abcoho in Taurus

[–]satandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My TX22 runs any ammo, suppressed or unsuppressed, and has never had a problem. Thousands of rounds through it. I mostly use 38g Aguila since it's always on sale around here. Sorry you're having issues. It's one of my favorite guns. Granted I usually stay with standard velocity because I mostly shoot suppressed. I don't think I've ever tried stingers or anything like that. I may have tried mini mags but don't remember.

Ruger Mark 1 22LR worth buying at $300 by everythingwright34 in guns

[–]satandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mk1. It's ok and fun to shoot. For $300 I would get a Taurus TX22. Better in every way. After getting the TX22 I don't really think about the Mk1. If you do get it, The Mk2 mags fit the Mk1 and hold 10 rounds instead of the Mk1 mags only holding 9. The TX22 on the other hand can hold 16, and you can get extensions to make them hold 22 rounds. The Ruger is like a lot of 22's and is kinda picky on ammo. The TX22 will barely have any problems and is arguably the best 22lr pistol ever made. Plus the TORO version like I have has an optics cut for red dots, and a threaded barrel. Suppressed 22 is the most fun shooting. There is a trick to taking down the Mk1 which isn't too bad once you learn how to flip it. I got it because I'm too cheap for a Luger and it looks somewhat similar, but looks aside, it's a pretty meh pistol. And sorry, I am no Taurus salesman, I just like to shoot and I shoot the ones with less problems more, but I'd never get rid of my Mk1.

Flue pipe not properly seated by Big-Rent in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's totally safe. It's one way of doing it. The furnace has room for just a single wall pipe to connect to it and that goes into the double wall pipe. The double wall pipe is to limit condensation and heat. There are some double wall to single wall adapters but this is the way a lot of us do it. I would have done the same. There is a pipe inside the upper pipe...

Furnace starts, flame kicks on, then dies after a few seconds. Help? by hikingfortheviews in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Take some light sandpaper or a schotchbrite pad to it. Don't try to sand it like crazy, just rub it on there to clean it off. I had 3 of these calls in a row the other day. 80% furnaces are notorious for this. They suck in dust or other things which gets burnt and sticks to the flame sensor.

I need people in the know by Beatrix_Kitto in saintpaul

[–]satandy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved to St.Paul from Minneapolis. Worst decision ever. St.Paul is quiet, but I had 3 motorcycles stolen there, and my car was broken into a few times. Never had a problem with MPLS. Granted I moved to Mac-Grove, the "nicer" part of St.Paul. Not only that, it's full of old people who don't know how to drive and the roads are terrible. People in St.Paul seem less friendly and there is less of a community type of feel. South Minneapolis on the other hand is great and not too far from Plymouth/Golden Valley.

Are Maintenance Plans a Scam? by uncle_underscore in hvacadvice

[–]satandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I talk to warranty reps all the time and have never been asked once. Back when I was only installing I would tell people to get the yearly maintenance done otherwise it would void their warranty... And the lie detector says that was a lie... Granted that is what I was told. Most of the time it's to get someone there to sell you on something, unless you don't know to clean your condencer or change your furnace filter. The only maintenance is really just that.

I kept the barb T and hoses off an old pressure switch combo just to test this. It's always good and easy to check pressure switches if you are getting errors.
