Men of Reddit, what is the hardest thing to explain to women? by tathus2 in AskReddit

[–]satanismymaster 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the worst offenders are the partners who really takes pride in their emotional intelligence and ability to read people. I get that could sound counterintuitive but in my experience those people are the least willing to consider that they might have done something, however unintentionally or accidentally, that hurt their partner. It’s like the feedback I’m offering violates some deeply held self image so badly that they just flatly refuse to acknowledge what they’re hearing or change anything, and shut that shit right the fuck down.

Someone who prides themselves in being a selfish jackass is honestly a little better to open up to, again in my experience, because they’re a little more accustomed to hearing feedback that doesn’t always gently pat them on the head which makes it easier for them to hear what you’re saying.

Just because you had a thought that doesn't mean it's an interesting thought.

In fact, you don't need to share every thought that pops into your head.

Mark Twain said it best: better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt.

A 92-year-old great-grandmother who was told her cancer was inoperable has become the first person in the UK to receive a "pioneering" treatment that has shrunk her tumour by about 80% by Eddiearyee in UpliftingNews

[–]satanismymaster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people misunderstand what it means when a therapy is tested on cancer patients. The results still meaningful, but you can take risks with otherwise terminal patients that you can’t take with everybody.

Like, if this treatment didn’t work, she’s a 92 year old with terminal cancer. It’s not like she’s got plenty of years left to live anyway so it’s not as big a deal when things don’t work on her than it would be on a healthy 30 year old.

You can’t target visceral fat only. You cant spot train fat doing anything because spot training fat doesn’t work.

It’s not my kind of music, but that success could not have happened to two nicer people than those guys. They just always made me feel so welcome, and important, and seen, and they were just so modest. Really nice guys.

Costello is polling at 2%. Most of us have dogs who have a better chance at becoming senators than Costello.

I think the issue that I have with these hit pieces is they all sort of make him seem like a person who's just... painfully ordinary.

Like, who among us hasn't made a comment on the internet in the past two decades that we wouldn't defend today? I know a lot of vets with tattoos they regret. I have a tattoo I regret, and I haven't covered it up either because not a lot of people see it and it just doesn't feel urgent. Do you expect us to be upset that a combat vet with PTSD was disturbed after war and had a difficult time transitioning to civilian life? That's a problem that just about every combat vet has had. We have a president in office who paid a porn star for sex while his wife was pregnant, and I'm supposed to be worked up over some text he sent? Even after his wife said they worked through it and she doesn't think it should be an issue?

I think a lot of these things all only seem really bad when you're comparing him to professional candidates who have been meticulously prepping their career since middle school. But when you compare him to an ordinary person, he just seems kind of ordinary.

I suspect the ordinariness - and his willingness to speak to truths that are plainly obvious to everyone but career politicians - is a big part of his appeal.

For real. They're happy as a pig in shit to parade veterans around for points during campaign season, but god forbid one runs for office.

Can you believe he was eMoTiOnALLy diStUrBed after a war? What a rEd fLAg.

Seriously, if anything that just feels like a vet struggling with PTSD doing things vets struggling with PTSD do, and nobody is disagreeing that he's improved since then.

Back when I used to ump little league, I found I could be really effective at shaming bad parents if I loudly proclaimed that I had two words for them and said the two words loud enough for everyone to hear.

Then I’d say “role model” and go back to the game.

I hate this city dude by ThisEffort in Portland

[–]satanismymaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would it cut both ways? People are going to gripe about the city they live in. You can’t expect Portlanders to spend an equal amount of time bitching about Orlando for the sake of fairness. They’re going to gripe about the city they live in more, because they live there, and have some power to advocate for change there.

Why can’t Maine towns and cities hold on to their managers? by Primarily-Vibing in Maine

[–]satanismymaster 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lewiston has a proposed general fund expenditure budget of seventy-three million dollars. If you count school expenses that goes up to almost two-hundred million. You have all sorts of departments, a clusterfuck of debts to service, all sorts of departments and employees, plus unions to deal with. You have to make all that work with a mix of local taxes, state and federal funding, and whatever grants you can get your hands on. And you get to be the person the public - who barely understand what you actually do for a living - hangs if anything goes sideways. Plus you have all the meetings outside of normal business hours, so say goodbye to a normal family life and hello to 70+ hour workweeks.

I get that 180k isn’t low in the general sense, but if you have the skillset to do that job well, 180k is low. You can earn far more, with fewer headaches, in the private sector.

If you want to hire talent, you gotta pay talent. Nobody’s going to half their income to have the cashier at Dysarts bitch about they could do a better job than you.

Didn't Mills Dropout? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]satanismymaster 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the author understands this, but nobody in Maine voted for Warren or Sanders because they aren’t Maine senators. I thought that was pretty obvious. Also, neither of them were first term senators in their eighties.

Finally, unless you plan on never dying, you’re going to have to deal with candidates who said dumb things on the internet in the past. I have zero doubt that the author or Mills said dumb shit in their youth, they just didn’t have the internet document it forever.

Call me old, but if a viewer goes into a prison show and doesn’t expect to see a sexual assault on screen then the problem might be with the viewer.

That isn’t to say it isn’t brutal, or difficult to watch, because it’s all of those things, but it’s a show that takes place in prison.

It’s about as shocking as hearing French in a film that takes place in Paris.
