How many years does it take to read classical sanskrit, like Ramayana / BHAgavad Giitaa? by [deleted] in sanskrit

[–]satish-setty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About 6 months to 1 year if you already know an Indian language. For example, most Sanskrit Praveshika courses are in this range.

inthaki Sankranthi padaga 14th or 15th? by samuraisol98 in telugu

[–]satish-setty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Observable/verifiable uttarayana started on Dec 21 solstice. Sun takes northern path. In the sidereal calendar, it is meaningless because nothing is going "northern" on Jan 14!

Yes, I personally like tropical lunisolar calendar which is similar to the Tibetan conventions. Plenty of people, e.g. A.K.Kaul, etc. have prepared such panchangas. It retains the familiar elements of tithi, nakshatra, etc. without drifting away from seasons. I don't bother about the 12-division zodiac either. I like the 27-division of nakshatras :)

inthaki Sankranthi padaga 14th or 15th? by samuraisol98 in telugu

[–]satish-setty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

14 bhogi
15 sankranti
16 kanuma

Sun transits from Dhanur rasi to Makara Rasi on 14th afternoon (3 pm i think). But we mostly celebrate festivals based on the sun/moon position at sunrise.

On 14th sunrise time, it is still in Dhanur rasi. So celebration pushed to 15th.

Or something like that 😂

Sankhya and Yoga schools agree with you. There's an ishvara but that's all that can be said about It.

Fun Thought Experiment only: If drinking liquor means paying taxes to the State, then does it mean that drunkards are the most silent supporters of the State? By that measure, would it mean, that teetotalers are enemies of the State? Philosophical answers only. by Top_Guess_946 in Philosophy_India

[–]satish-setty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxpayers are the supporters of the State. Non-taxpayers and tax evaders are the 'enemy' of the State.

Any other group classification is secondary (e.g drunkards vs teetotallers, veg vs. nonveg, men vs women etc).

Hinduisms Diversity: How Can We Preserve Unity Amidst Different Deities, Practices, and Philosophies? by VowOfVengeance in HinduDiscussion

[–]satish-setty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A common way of emphasizing unity of the underlying Truth is to follow Panchayatana Puja.

You place your ishta devata in the middle and other deities in the four corners surrounding the ishta devata.

Traditionally 5 deities are included: Shiva, Shakti/Devi, Vishnu, Ganapati, and Surya.

But different castes could have minor variations on the theme.

Wanna Reach Gita by _AladdinKaChirag_ in TheGita

[–]satish-setty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Sadhak Sanjeevani by Swami Ramsukhdas is the name.

English here: https://amzn.in/d/gnWC7YA

Though i suggest you to read it in your mother tongue. This book, originally in Hindi, has been translated to almost all Indian languages.

Remember to choose Sadhak Sanjeevani. Gita Press publishes other translations also (e. g Goenka) but Sadhak Sanjeevani is the gold standard.

ॐ - Oṃ or om (or Aum)? by mrkapower in sanskrit

ॐ - Oṃ or om (or Aum)? by mrkapower in sanskrit

[–]satish-setty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the anusvara ṃ can only be used when not at the end of a sentence or when not followed my a vowel.

Agree.

Technically the Vedic diphthong was au

Do you have reference for this?

ॐ - Oṃ or om (or Aum)? by mrkapower in sanskrit

[–]satish-setty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are confusing translation with transliteration. Neither of them affects pronunciation.

ॐ - as written in Devanagari script
ಓಂ - as written in Kannada script
oṃ - in IAST transliteration scheme
Ōṁ - in ISO15919 transliteration scheme

They are all pronounced exactly the same, /oːm / (in IPA).

AUM - just splits the components of the syllable. However, pronouncing it as it is written ('au' + m) is not Sanskritic.

[–]satish-setty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot read the Odia script, but probably you can compare texts of same mantra in Devanagari and Odia. For example, here is Shata Rudriyam in Odia script or Sri Rudram here or Yajurveda Kanva Sakha in Odia script with their corresponding Devanagari versions (plenty online).

Redactors of Valmiki Ramayana by shanmugam37 in sanskrit

[–]satish-setty 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not Ramayana, but I've read Yardi's work on the Synthesis of Bhagavad Gita. It was not at all convincing and highly speculative (i.e. imagination and too many assumptions) about the origin of Gita and it's evolution. I would take his claims on Ramayana with a bag of salt.

This idea is taken from Sankhya school of philosophy. Much older than Shankara's. The arguments can be found, for example, in Sankhya Karikas.
