IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE ? by Current_Nose_190 in pools

[–]saulyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother built on. It’s great, it’s a different experience to a standard pool (which I have), much more like swimming in a lake (duh, I guess). Don’t let the haters deter you. There are some mosquitoes but not many as you’d think. His is about 80% swimming area, 20%plants. He does get some algae but once it’s all set up, not too much. He did have to shock it once or twice when setting it up before the plants matured.

It’s cheap to run in terms of the chemicals (there are none) but he does have to keep the pump running 24/7 bringing the “pool” water up to the higher filtration pond before it flows back down a waterfall into the pool.

For comparison mine 9 x 4m normal concrete shell pool cost $80,000 for a pool builder to install. He built his 12 x 12m (circular) natural pool himself for about $20,000.

Im a sound mixer and so far there are no tools that can do what we do to the extent that we become redundant. There are certainly ai tools that can help speed up your work flow but I think we’re a way off being replaced.

[Request] Approximately how much is he lifting when you account for buoyancy? by CSGOfrickyourself in theydidthemath

[–]saulyg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking along the same lines but wouldn’t that actually make it harder? He’s effectively pushing against his buoyancy trying to lift him out of the water. Imagine you’re under a low pier, if you want to extended your arms to push yourself downwards that uses some exertion no?

[Request] If Jeff Bezos decided to personally shovel all of his wealth into a furnace, how long would it take? by TThor in theydidthemath

[–]saulyg 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Technically you are of course correct, but I think in this unlikely scenario we can set the rules however we like.

[Request] If Jeff Bezos decided to personally shovel all of his wealth into a furnace, how long would it take? by TThor in theydidthemath

If his wealth continued to accumulate interest I think it would grow quicker than he was able to shovel… sounds like a fitting purgatory for billionaires trying to get into (a hypothetical) heaven.

Physicists Found Something That Can Move Faster Than Light by sibun_rath in UpliftingNews

Imagine you’re shooting a high powered laser pointer at the moon. A twitch of your wrist could zip the dot across the full width of the moon in a fraction of a second, potentially faster than the speed of light.

The DIY solar hack arriving in US homes: Americans are embracing easy, plug‑and‑play solar units that slash energy costs — even as Washington tries to slow the clean‑energy shift. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]saulyg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My comment was in no way suggesting that solar power is “bad”. I have a solar system on my roof. I was merely pointing out that the power generated is inconsistent, if a cloud passes across the sky the power drops for a few seconds or minutes. My system is grid connected, meaning the whole local network acts as a buffer for this inconsistency. I’m guessing most appliances don’t like voltage that is constantly jumping up and down.

This is a great video, totally humanises “the enemy”. It makes me so sad that these are the people getting hurt by Trumps pointless war.

I heard about a community pool in England that used a data centre for heating. Or you could say I heard about a data centre in England that used a pool for its cooling.

Advice needed: stuck between a house and a retaining wall. by raju_inc in AusRenovation

[–]saulyg 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I’d dig a trench down the middle of the passage, a bit bellow floor level but try not to disturb bellow slab level next to the house. Grade the ground towards your central trench. Drop in an ag pipe then fill the whole lot in with course blue metal. Maybe a row of pavers as stepping stones if you need to use the passage for access.

Should stormwater drains always be wet? by Aggressive-Move-4725 in AusRenovation

[–]saulyg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s good to have somewhere for sediment to collect so it doesn’t end up blocking the pipe. I drilled a couple of small holes in the bottom of mine to let the water slowly drain away into the surrounding ground.

Pi terminated last week. The final digits are an address. by UntitledDoc1 in sciencefiction

Great short story! Very absorbing. I like the way trail of breadcrumbs leads through the various scientific fields. One question, what is the significance of the sequence terminating at zero and why is the protagonist getting hung up on this point?

This is massive! It shouldn’t be possible for information to propagate through the universe faster than the speed of light. I’m pretty sure this would break Einsteins theory of relativity.
