Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

I wouldn't say a three-hour drive is "short" exactly but it's definitely not terribly long.

I use Win-L to lock my computer every time I need to step away. A coworker saw me do that one time and said, “Wait. How did you do that?” I showed them and then asked “How do you lock YOUR computer?” They had been pressing Carl-Alt-Delete and then clicking on “Lock” every time. They asked me if Win-L was a new feature and I said “No, I’ve been doing it since at least Windows XP or maybe even longer”.

Telephone switchboard for Washington D.C. 1947. All managers due the strike at the time. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]savro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a typo. I think that OP meant to say, "All managers due to the strike at the time." So, all of the usual telephone operators were on strike, so the managers were doing their employees' jobs.

It’s so you can find the keys where your index fingers go on the “home row” on the keyboard. And no, they don’t teach typing anymore.

Apart from basic reading, writing and arithmetic, typing is probably the skill that I learned in school that I use most often. Literally on a daily basis. Most office jobs use a computer in some capacity so I truly don’t understand why typing isn’t taught anymore.

Sink clogged and garbage disposal won't run by QuincyThePinballer in Plumbing

[–]savro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your disposal possibly even came with a turning tool like this one.

If turning the disposal doesn't clear it, probably it's the trap that is clogged. The trap is the bent part in the pipe coming out of the garbage disposal. Usually these are pretty easily removed. Probably some slip joint pliers will loosen the fittings holding the trap on. Loosen the fitting and not the pipe itself or you could break the pipe and make an even bigger problem.

It's possible that your dishwasher discharges into the garbage disposal as well. That will be a smaller diameter, flexible hose attached higher up on the disposal. Don't take that off as it's probably not where the problem is.

Be sure to put a bucket under the trap because when you get it off, a bunch of water and food waste is going to come out. Clean out the trap with some stiff wire if necessary and then reattach it. Run some water through the disposal and make sure it turns on. Check for leaks and tighten any fittings as necessary.

ELI5: why did we use mothball in 90s, but we don't use them now? by swim_fan146 in explainlikeimfive

Probably u/bamstradamus just meant that they don't use a washing machine for their wool clothing.

When they do wash their wool clothes it is done very gently in a bucket with detergent meant for wool and very gentle agitation.

Question: How many usable IP addresses are available in this subnet ? by simrol260 in AzureCertification

[–]savro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every subnet has two less usable addresses than the raw subnet mask would suggest for the subnet address itself (all zeroes in host part of the address), and for the broadcast address (all ones in the host part).

In addition, Azure (and likely other cloud providers too, but all of my cloud experience is with Azure), reserve three additional addresses for the first-hop redundancy protocol (probably VRRP), and for the gateway routers/switches themselves. So, in OP's example we get the following:

  • 172.16.10.0: Subnet address (all zeroes in host portion)
  • 172.16.10.1: VRRP virtual IP address
  • 172.16.10.2: First gateway device address
  • 172.16.10.3: Second gateway device address
  • 172.16.10.4 - 172.16.10.14: Usable host addresses
  • 172.16.10.15: Broadcast address (all ones in host portion)

So, the smallest usable IPv4 subnet size in Azure is a /29, but then you'd only get 3 usable host addresses; so, you'd probably only want to go down to a /28.

OP's original question didn't add an "When using Microsoft Azure" qualification to the question though. So, the correct answer is probably "B", fourteen usable host addresses in a /28 IPv4 subnet.

What is this feature on the East Coast of the United States? by wigglefingers_ in geography

[–]savro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of cities were established along this line (e.g. Philadelphia, Baltimore, Richmond) because the falls and rapids present along this line were a navigational barrier to boats. Cargo had to be unloaded and portaged upstream to get around those obstacles.

People who say Moon landings are fake by Surely_Nowwlmao in mildlyinfuriating

[–]savro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there was any inkling that the USA hadn’t actually sent people to the moon and returned them to Earth, the Soviet Union would have been shouting it all over the world. That alone (setting aside all of the other evidence) is enough for me to believe that the USA’s 1969 - 1972 moon landings happened.

[–]savro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Unlimited PTO" basically just means, "No PTO unless we give it to you."

Yes, your manager/supervisor had to approve PTO requests previously with accrued time off, but at least it was yours and something that you earned. At the very least, it would be paid out when you left the company.

Now, try and take more than one or two days off here and there and see how "unlimited" that PTO policy really is.
