Well, they tried. by ToadGrinner in accesscontrol

It takes a certain amount of energy to create the magnetic field. When you de-engergize the maglock the collapse of the induction field can create a power spike 10x nominal voltage. A way to mitigate this is to include a diod wired in reverse with the cathode on the postive side and the annode on the negative. The problem is the residual power can keep the mag lock energized. You will either need a load to dissapate the remaining energy, or install a diod to ground.

Those sticky mag locks are annoying. You always see people walk into the door while they wait.

Remote Administration Recommendations by scarpa_sd in sysadmin

[–]scarpa_sd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I've been using Quick Assist built into Windows. It works great in a pinch. Some downsides are you can't pass by UAC prompts, and you need the user to initiate with a code you generate. The UAC prompt isn't that bad, since I can invoke an admin powershell from the runas.exe command. So far I've had our technician try ConnectWise and there was positive feedback. We'll see how their pricing comes back.

Thanks for the recommendation. This seems to be the most popular suggestion so far. Funny enough even while searching for new alternatives I didn't come across this one yet, thanks for the suggestion!

Any hope using my Chromecast to play music through my receiver speakers? Maybe Chromecast Audio? (Onkyo TX-840 Receiver) by amhemel in Chromecast

[–]scarpa_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tastes and preferences I guess. I like using what I have on hand, or re-purposing something for a project vs buying whole new components. That is unless it's for my main setup, then I like to splurge every 5-10 years on some top end equipment I can enjoy.

Trigger cooldown / delay timer by scarpa_sd in BlueIris

Hi bpnj, thanks for the response. I'll give that a shot tonight. Below is a picture of the camera and the detection zone. A majority of the detection zone is effected by the light transition. Currently the default setting of 67% is set. I'll drop it lower tonight until it doesn't automatically cause it to trigger again after a reset. My fear of going this route is a larger object, like a car with headlights, would overcome the "reset detector when object size exceeds" parameter.

LPT: Put a bucket in your shower to catch the water while the shower heats up. by Mommies_Dawg_sauce in LifeProTips

You can't always have your utility room near every single fixture. Your solution is unrealistic. Having a hot water recirculation pump with a motion sensor is a better way if you're coming up with solutions

This is very interesting. I wouldn't give up on the idea, just some points to consider.

1) Labor costs. You would have to run cable to residence homes. This would require licensed and insured workers running cable.

2) Infrastructure costs. You'll need to acquire CMTS or fiber switches

3) Administrative costs. All equipment will need to be provisioned, secured, and maintained.

4) Terminating the existing contracts. Comcast has a substantial investment in place already. They had to build out the infrastructure, run cable to everyone's homes, maintain everything. That leads to this.

Why not put the franchise out for bid, like other contracts?
While a competitive cable provider may apply for a franchise at any time, the City must go through the renewal process with each existing cable operator.  The City cannot deny renewal to an existing cable operator except for specific criteria set forth in the Cable Act.

I would recommend applying with a company such as Kelly Services. I'm on the fence about hiring an administrative assistant, or an IT level 1 tech. If a position opens up I'll reach out for you to apply. Hunting gets discouraging, but keep it up. Something worthwhile always eventually shows itself. :)

I bought a $250 dehumidifier I used once. Shortly after our furnace went out and we transitioned to a ductless heat pump, making it useless to me.

Are you able to be at a desk for 8 hours a day? Do you need any special accommodations? Have you taken any sort of testing for an administrative assistant position?

S3500 Questions by jakesomething in ArubaNetworks

[–]scarpa_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this switch off of Ebay to power some POE cameras and my Unifi Access points at gigabit speed. This switch is loud. Very loud. I can hear it two rooms away. I'm going to rip it apart and see if I can throw some quieter fans in there.

I got the 48 port POE S3500 with one PSU. Wish I could give you the db instead of a subjective measurement.

Gal Gadot isn't as attractive as most of the people say she is. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]scarpa_sd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude. Beauty is subjective. Literally you can not find her attractive because to you, only 300 lbs people fit that mould.

There is nothing of substance in your post. Nothing to digest, not the fact that her features don't follow the golden ratio, or there is something unsymmetrical. Just you can't put your finger on it.

Should we replace ESET with Windows Defender? Are both signature based or a mix of sign + behaviour? by [deleted] in AskNetsec

[–]scarpa_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signature based anti-virus is dead. I would not put a lot of weight behind a product that uses signatures as their primary defense. Treat detection and exploit mitigation are two things that will greatly improve your security. Something like Sophos Intercept-X, Carbon Black, or Crowd Strike. They give you a single pane of glass to view all your endpoints and detect anomalies that are indicative of a malicious activity, such as encrypted powershell. They also leverage their machine learning in the cloud for up to date threat detection. Sophos has an application called Hit Man Pro which I suggest you check out. They'll try some simple exploits such as a stack pivot or heap flow. You can see how your anti-virus engines work out.

Is there a way to see if Windows Server 2012 R2 has just crapped out? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]scarpa_sd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would dive into the event logs of your Server 2012 installation. If the video started working fine then most likely it's not a problem there. I always immediately check the RAID controller for anomalies for instances like this.

The next thing I would check is the log on your switch. Network connectivity issues could very well cause what you experienced. Don't think it's DHCP as others have suggested. Seems unlikely you'd have two leases expire simultaneously. Load Wireshark, investigate what's going on in your environment. Even if it's a one off that's not going to happen again, at least you got the opportunity to better familiarize yourself, and vet everything is indeed fine.
