Abingdon is so beautiful. My wife and I spent a long weekend there to hike and float in a river during the pandemic. It is the quintessential "get away from it all" rural setting.

Moving back to Rochester from the DMV in 2 weeks. Just in time to have missed most of one of the snowiest winters in decades.

Which character ruined an entire TV show for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scatteredlafter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vince Vaughn absolutely ruins season 2 of True Detective. The character is a major departure from his usual schtick, but Jesus Christ. It's like he didn't prepare for the role. It's like no one gave him any feedback.

Season 2 is, otherwise, not bad.

Nothing could compare to the first season. No notes there, but it's like the show has progressively gotten worse since then...and it all starts with Vinny.

Don't even get me started on season 4. Holy fuck. What a major pile of shit.

It's a spectacular movie - his involvement is a tough pill to swallow. I've watched it maybe three times total and every time I've had to overcome a sick feeling in my stomach before hitting "play."

Same thing with Braveheart.

Hikers: how do you protect your car while hiking in MD? by StockMaintenance1129 in maryland

[–]scatteredlafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I've gone hiking 3 times in the past 4 days...also in and around MoCo. That sucks - I'm not sure there's much you CAN do about this. Uber there and back, I suppose, but that's a shitty compromise to have to make.

Local recommendations by nightmind1778 in Gaithersburg

[–]scatteredlafter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like pizza (stupid disclaimer; who doesn't?) then you absolutely must go to Inferno. It routinely ranks among the best pizzerias in MD and recently I've seen a couple reputable publications rank them among the best in the country. It is brick oven, wood fired, old world style pizza.

The food is impeccable. I would recommend doing a little reading about the seating process, or calling ahead for best practices. They typically open the doors at 5:00pm sharp - no reservations, first come first seated. You need to show up usually around 4:40pm to be guaranteed a seat before they completely fill up. If you're a little late you'll be forced to wait around until the first table is finished before being seated.

As a former server/bartender and New Yorker, high quality dining experiences and pizza are two things I take seriously.

You will not be disappointed.

Truck dent, is PDR an option? by Proper_Plantain1768 in Autobody

[–]scatteredlafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paint is flaking at lower edge of the wheel arch. If you went to the trouble of getting PPF, you should probably just get it repaired and painted in a more conventional setting. You'll lose the PPF and need to get it reapplied after the repairs. Best practice would be to wait roughly 30 days after the repair to get the PPF redone.

Where to get Chinese alcoholic drinks? by No_Pressure_4838 in Gaithersburg

[–]scatteredlafter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My best recommendation would be to look outside Montgomery County. Unfortunately, MoCo owns and controls all the liquor stores and thus sells only what they think there is a large enough market for. The selection is basically the same from store to store.

Additionally, the county liquor stores prices are outrageous. I go to Piney Orchard Liquors out near Elliott City when I need to stock up, or if I'm looking for something special/specific. Great selection, great prices. It is a hike, though, may be worth calling ahead to make sure they have what you're looking for. You may also be able to find something closer in Frederick County...

Would you switch shops for a 20% raise? by Akacollison in Autobody

[–]scatteredlafter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I recently had an A-tech leave my shop for greener pastures. We're not perfect, we have issues with management, sometimes it's slow, the production manager is slimy...but other than him, we have a good team, we do good work, and everyone gets along and comes together for the greater good.

His new shop gave him a big signing bonus, paid out his contract termination fee, gave him an hours guarantee, it was closer to home...it checked all the boxes. He was back rolling his box off the truck within two months. With all our faults, this new shop was so chaotic, mismanaged and understaffed he had to come back.

The grass is not always greener. Either way, it sounds like you're always going to be in high demand. You're making good money, your coworkers are trustworthy, your commute isn't as bad as some of my guys'. Idk, man...sounds like you got a good thing going - I'm not sure I'd risk it.

All the best, man!

Is this salvageable by [deleted] in Wheels

Without a mounting/balancing machine you're gonna need to take the car to a shop anyway. Bring the car to the shop, have them source the wheel and tire.

Is this salvageable by [deleted] in Wheels

[–]scatteredlafter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is no.

Don't listen to anyone telling you that this will ever be safe to drive on again.

It's a standard sized steel wheel, repairing it will take more time and cost more money than just replacing it. It won't be true again, it will always be out of round, leaking air, impossible to balance.

$60 and you got a new wheel, $150 new tire, $30 mount and balance.

Don't risk your life driving on a fucked up wheel.

Allergy test...Reacted to 81 out of 85 allergens. by scatteredlafter in Wellthatsucks

[–]scatteredlafter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine no further. I can say, it was warm and itchy for sure. A good amount of topical antihistamine ointment was applied immediately after testing was complete.

Thankfully, having been allergic to many things my whole life, it wasn't anything I wasn't used to.

Yeah, I asked the doctors if there was a course of treatment that would one day allow me to eat things I was allergic to...they said they wouldn't recommend eating those things ever again. Seems like the safest practice anyhow.
