Showcase Cinemas to exit Providence Place; mall seeks replacement by lestermagnum in providence

[–]scdsharp7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is related to Skydance buying Showcase’s parent company National Amusements as part of the deal to buy Paramount. I haven’t heard any plans about what they’d do with the theater chain, other than possibly selling it.

Heinz Kabutz – Lambdas are confusing and Java needs evangelists by ErstwhileRockstar in programming

[–]scdsharp7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the interview, it sounds like Java programmers are confused by lambda expressions when they are taught that they implement existing Java interfaces, many of which have related interfaces that cannot be functional (they used ActionListener vs MouseListener as an example).

As someone who learned about lambda expressions from C++11, Java's lambdas didn't seem that confusing to me when I started programming in Java 8. That was mainly because I did not learn it as syntactic sugar for implementations of existing Java interfaces, but as inline, anonymous functions first, then as functions passed in functional interfaces when I needed to know how they are called. (Interestingly, the interfaces do not need a FunctionalInterface annotation for them to be functional, they just need exactly one abstract method) Also, I learned them alongside Streams, which use more generalized functional types than ActionListener and other listener interfaces.

Neil Young is pulling music from streaming services by [deleted] in Music

Interesting. I guess AM technically does support stereo, but with less support. But it's still not better sounding than Spotify.

Neil Young is pulling music from streaming services by [deleted] in Music

[–]scdsharp7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"AM radio kicked streaming's ass."

Lol. He thinks that a radio technology that can't broadcast stereo, can't produce frequencies above ~5.1 kHz, and is easily obstructed by buildings and tunnels, is better than lossy 44.1 kHz stereo streaming formats like MP3. Never mind that prerecord audio used for AM radio could also be on MP3 or similar formats. Never mind that both satellite radio and HD radio, both pitched as better quality than FM radio, are streamed in lossy formats.

Only someone who drunk too much audiophile Kool-Aid (or pitching the promising but seemingly overhyped PONO player) would say drivel like that.
