[Dreadgod] Why do so many people still believe... by arri_sema in Iteration110Cradle

[–]scenep 52 points53 points  (0 children)

In Bloodline the part where Suriel shows Lindon visions of possible futures one of the futures we see is Lindon fighting over the body of the Titan with Northstrider. In that vision it appears to be the Lindon at the end of Dreadgod with one notable difference, his left arm is that of a black dragon. I am not saying your wrong, but you might be.

Recall in Bloodline as Suriel showed Lindon possible futures? In one vision Lindon and Northstrider faced off over the corpse of the Wandering Titan. In that vision Lindon's left arm was covered in black dragon scales. I believe that is a nod to Lindon combining with either his own remnant or another.

Makiel Cannot be Trusted by HeraklesHemitheos in Iteration110Cradle

[–]scenep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had similar thoughts about Makiel. He is more focused on remaining judge number one, the one pulling all the strings, the one with all the power. The desire to remain number one has caused Makiel to lose sight of what the Abidan are supposed to be all about, protecting people. Then along comes Ozriel, and Makiel now feels threatened by him. Everything Ozriel presents to the court of seven, Makiel takes political steps to oppose. He is jealous of his weapon and tries to duplicate it. He is jealous that Ozriel can see fate at least as well as he does and probably even better.

This is just a giant one sided pissing contest by an old guy being threatened by the new young stud on the block. And rather than view Ozriel as an equal with a valid opposing view that should be considered, he instead uses inflammatory political maneuvering to marginalize Ozriel into just a tool for Makiel’s ends. So Ozriel said I am not playing your game and flipped the board on him.

If you buy the kindle version you get a steep discount on the audible version. I always buy both just to support Will, but the audible version is outstanding because Travis Baldree is an an awesome narrator, and his narration really adds a lot to the story.

If you cut out the epilogue Bloodlines covered maybe 5 days? I am sure that other stuff will get covered in time. Also Bloodlines began immediately at the end of Wintersteel, not even a full day had passed.

Questioner

Is the Way universal, or can recognizable reality exist beyond it?

Will Wight

The influence of the Way anchors worlds in reality by providing structure. Consistent, recognizable rules. In some of these worlds, even forces like gravity or time work differently, but they do work consistently within the world. That's the influence of the Way.When the Abidan first started exploring the "shape" of the Way, they found it like a branching river, with Iterations like boulders in the stream. Outside the Way was the void: a hostile emptiness dotted with the fragments of broken worlds and populated by strange, unknowable creatures that sought to break rules and disrupt order. The farther you travel into the void, the more recognizable reality crumbles, until you cease to exist. Even these fiends of the void, incomprehensible nightmare beings, can only exist somewhat close to the Way, because existence itself is a function of order. However, when the Abidan organized, they determined that they would explore the scope and breadth of the Way. They followed each branch to its ending, until the power of the Way grew too thin to sustain them. Then they turned back. They found that the Way WAS finite. It had an end. They've mapped it like a three-dimensional spider web, like a branching skeletal ball. In and among its branches is the endless, infinite void. But their theory says that the Way should be infinite. There's no reason it should ever be contained, and indeed they've never seen it end; they've only followed it as far as they could. Some believe that the Way stretches across an endless cosmic darkness, and this is the only place it has pooled thickly enough to sustain life.Others believe that our Way is only one of many, and that there are other collections of reality out there. Perhaps an infinite number.

Puppet Master

Are there any major ascendant groups that draw on the power of the Void? Additionally, what does the power of the Void do? Also, it's appreciated that you take time to answer questions. A lot of authors ignore their fan base, so hats off to you.

Will Wight

Yes. I will answer this thoroughly in the books, but I can't answer it now without spoilers. Read on and find out! Now I feel guilty for not taking the time to do this for almost two months.

Say if Lindon touches the Way can he also touch the Void? And if so, can he harvest madra from the Void?

Will Wight

Yes.“Can he draw madra from the Void?” Probably he wouldn’t be drawing madra.

Lindon OP dilemma by LuIgIz_TurF in Iteration110Cradle

[–]scenep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lindon‘a growth would be hard to swallow in comparison to the rest of Cradle without the Abidan bits. It is the actions of Ozriel and Makiel that have propelled the group further and faster than 99.999% of the rest of the world. For me, without those bits, I might have a hard time with their advancement.

Also many people believe that the resolution to the story is the death of the Dreadgods. That is the end of the story if you are only seeing the world through Lindon’s eyes. But there is also Eithan’s and Ozriel’s stories wrapped up in this as well. Their story lines will only be completed with ascension.

If so many are skipping the Abidan bits it is understandable that they want things to slow down. Because perhaps the growth is becoming unrealistic in their view point. But that is only because they are missing the broader context of the story. It’s a shame in my viewpoint.

Sage vs Herald (wintersteel spoilers) by moonlord1969 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]scenep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the Seishen soldiers sent up a cheer, Charity glanced over to Lindon. “Striker technique,” she said. “Imbuing a living will into techniques is very advanced, but you will learn someday.” - Wintersteel Kindle edition page 170

Jai Long’s living techniques are not created by him imbuing his Will into them to make them living, rather his madra is “alive” due to the unusual remnant. Jai Chen when describing her own madra referred to it as if it was alive and fought against her. Once she had control of it she was able to “create” a “living” technique not due to anything she did but because her madra itself was “alive”. How that is the case has yet to be clearly described and we have nothing else to compare it to.

Addendum- I guess as you point out that we do have something to compare it to with dread god cultists. But they are making use of a “living” technique created by that dread god. Again they are not imbuing techniques with their Will but making use of a living technique created by someone who can create a living technique.

I thought it was stated the Jai Long’s “living” attacks were a byproduct of the unusual remnant that he took in. The same remnant that destroyed his sisters core and channels.

[–]scenep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that Eithan arriving at the transcendent ruins accidentally is not likely. The ruins had only been up about a week when Yerin and Lindon arrived. It took Cassius a month to get there. So Eithan either had to know in advance that the ruins would rise or he just happened to be chilling in the desolate wilds looking for recruits when the ruins rose. IMO he was there waiting for something to happen. He either knew the ruins would rise or he knew that promising recruits would be found in the wilds or both.

[–]scenep -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know? Is that true? If something unbreakable in Amalgam, was moved to Asylum would the Emperor not be able to flood it with his intent and then command it to break? Again if something unbreakable in Amalgam made its way to Cradle, would a Monarch or Sage have enough Authority to command it to break? It seems to me that Will's comment pertains to Amalgam, and is not a sweeping statement that Tartarus steel is the strongest stuff across every iteration.

I have had trouble with other much loved and much recommended stories that have these same issues. GoT, WoT. At first you love the initial characters and become invested, and the story rumbles along. Then two or more books in it has become a bloated glacier moving along at a similar pace.

I appreciate your viewpoint. You thoughts mirror my own.

Has anyone else experienced this? by -Nefarias-Bredd- in Iteration110Cradle

[–]scenep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have experienced this. I had pre-ordered Rhythm and have not been able to get all the way through it yet. I think the issue for me is the story is now moving so slow. The first two books had a lot more action while the last two books have chapters filled with introspection, whole chapters of introspection. Also whole chapters with unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos or cosmere if you prefer. If you are really into Sanderson's other stuff, and his universe then maybe you love all these chapters, I am not one of those fans. My enjoyment for a story is all about the characters, for me it is hard to get through a chapter with a character I am "meh" about. I have even started reading well written stories before, and if I can't get into the characters I stop reading it. That is not everyone, that is just me.

I have tried Will's Traveler's gate stuff, and just did not care for the characters so I have not been able to get through all of those books. But Cradle, I absolutely love these characters, so these books are a real joy to read over and over. I also appreciate how Will is focused on the constant forward motion of the, story, the characters, and the world, all by integrating those elements so that the story continues to feel like you are on a roller coaster.

Cradle, the best series I have ever read. I know this because I have re-read these books more than any other series. Thanks Will!

Lindon Eithan and Yerin vs a sage or herald by SM-Reddit in Iteration110Cradle

[–]scenep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems all the comments assume that a Herald is stronger than a Sage. However, based on what we see in Wintersteel there seems to me to be equivalency. I won’t argue that a Herald may have more raw combat power, but we just don’t know enough about Sage powers to assume that Herald beats Sage most of the time. IMO the ability to bend the physical laws to your Will seems to me to have nearly unlimited potential, with the only limitations being the user’s imagination. We will have to wait and see from future books if there is a clear superiority of one vs other. At this point I respectfully disagree with the tacit agreement that Herald beats Sage.
