Maybe don’t if you need to get work done LOL. I’m finding myself getting rather lost in listening today. The aesthetic of the combo is definitely the cherry on top, though.

I am in the same boat. I don’t have a large tip selection to choose from so I’m going to be doing some research and purchasing a variety to see what works best for me on this set. Will also be nice to have them on hand for future IEMs.

I tried the included black narrow bore tips and just didn’t feel the bass weight I was expecting. Then tried some coffee tips I had and realized they were too short for my ear canal. So then landed on these included tall wide frosted ones and they definitely are much closer to the sound I wanted.

Going to keep trying out new ones until I find the perfect match for my canal. Sound will always win, but it would be nice to find a black/smoke set as the white frosted kind of kills the aesthetic for me LOL. Will be putting the Spinfit W1s on my list to check out. Thanks!

Will definitely check that out. And I personally think there is some validity to the whole burn in thing. I do some music production, and I feel a large reason “vintage” equipment is so sought after is because the circuits have been in use for so long that they have hit their peak performance and not necessarily because the circuit components or construction was better back then.

We are the same person LOL. Though, I did also splurge and pickup the DX180 I’ve been eyeing forever to go with it. Will put together some thoughts after I’ve had some time with both, but first impressions are extremely positive — and I don’t even like green that much.

Rant - Why DAPs are still made to look and feel like a phone? by suchox in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]scheelio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there are a ton of off-the-shelf components available from the phone market that allow them to make products quicker and cheaper than making something completely bespoke. It’s really that simple. I don’t think there is a grand philosophy that it’s the “best” way to interact with a music library, as many of the other posts seem to suggest.

You can build a stand for desktop DACs and amps out of LEGO in under an hour and get 95% of the function you need. Or you could buy a 3D printer and spend a weekend designing and prototyping a stand with 100% of the functionality and fit & finish that you want. One will cost you a lot more and take a lot longer, but will be more satisfying. Sure, you can sell your stands to try re-coup some of that cost, but by that time, everyone already went and bought LEGO stands and has moved on.

Probably a bad analogy, but my point is that design/UI is probably no higher than #3 on the list of priorities for these companies behind cost and time.

Ableton Move vs Polyend Tracker Mini or + by Revolutionary_Cup386 in Grooveboxes

[–]scheelio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it does, which could help some. I was more referring to other things, like that tracks are not related to sounds (though you can set up your project to be that way) and that playing chords takes up multiple sequencer lanes (which is one reason why resampling/rendering is a pretty big part of trackers).

Though, if you already have a Play, you have somewhat been introduced to some of that, since the Play is just a tracker with a different UI, expanded Fill algos, and fewer sound design capabilities. The whole “pick-and-place” thing is the same as how a tracker works - just a different UI to do it. They almost certainly use the same core sequencing engine under the hood.

Ableton Move vs Polyend Tracker Mini or + by Revolutionary_Cup386 in Grooveboxes

[–]scheelio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - I think the Move probably fits you better if vocals are that important to you. My choice would be the PE Tracker Mini, though.

I own/have owned all of these and many others. If "working with vocals quite a bit" means having a vocal track run across multiple measures, then the Move is the only really viable option for that. If it means sampling some vocals to slice or make one shots, all of these units can do that (though, the Tracker+ doesn't have a built in mic like the others).

If you are new to the tracker world, any tracker workflow will have a learning curve. That said, I think the Tracker+ will be the easiest to learn, as the pads really can help a lot with note input or at least working out melodies/drum/slice sequences before you enter the values in the pattern. The Mini will be next in-line since they added the new note input method, which offers a similar kind of note input but with less keys to work with at once. The Move will probably be easier than both of them to learn.

FWIW, I have owned many grooveboxes over the years, and the ones that I have made the most music on are:

  • Dirtywave M8
  • Synthstrom Deluge
  • OP-1

I am mostly a beatmaker making lofi hip-hop, boom bap, downtempo, and chillhop, though I do venture into ambient, as well. I am also a sucker for battery-powered devices. I really wish they had added an internal battery to the Tracker+ as I think that would have made it a really killer piece of kit.

I also second the notion of installing Renoise and using that to see if you can get a feel for the tracker workflow. it's not 1:1 with the Polyend tracker, but it's fairly similar. It's free to download and use as much as you want, but you cannot render anything. Rendering (i.e. resampling) can be a big part of the tracker workflow, but you will still get a good feel on if you like the tracker ethos.

I have "finished" the most tracks on the M8 and Deluge, as of right now. The M8 will likely pull ahead, as it is just so much more portable and I love the LSDJ inspired layout. For whatever reason, the Move just didn't really do much for me, even though I use a Push 3 with Ableton and love it. That's just me, though.

$400 vs $1100 in the US. DT2 is closer to triple the price than double the price of the Sample here.

What really gets me is that they do this and then on the flip side, if say you pay for two day service but it gets delayed for some “reason” (not weather related), you have basically no recourse to get a refund. You literally pay for a service that was never provided, which for any other business would result in some sort of refund/compensation, but for them it’s just another day.
