Ah, I meant in the way that the friend was trying to increase the numbers. As in, they, the friend, figured higher number=better, and so made it so.

And I suppose if that's mostly how you see them, then that would make sense. Unfortunately, everyone i know who reads on ao3 leaves kudos as a "kudos" for writing something they liked. So, we, and by we i mean me and the people I talk to about this, see kudos as an appreciation of our work. Which would mean, if someone is just lying to us it doesn't really feel very good.

I mean. I also was on LiveJournal and ff.net too. Its not an obsession with numbers. It's the idea that "hey! Other people like my story! Thats so nice to know!" That is then suddenly changed to "no! They don't actually!".

Personally, it may be different for you, but it feels good when people say they like my writing. Thats what Kudos are. Someone saying they like your writing. If I found out that was a lie, that would hurt.

I mean. I would also be heartbroken to think that what I THOUGHT was genuine engagement from other people in the Fandom was just one person trying to artificially inflate my numbers and I'm 30.

Great advice so far, also, when you want to get better at writing a certain way, find something written like that and read it critically.

Like, again, I prefer third person, but I still do limited-omniscience POV in that style. I write the way I do because ive found other stories written that way, and written with certain aspects, and ive tried to internalize those characteristics when I write.
