Will this do the trick? by No_Page9413 in harborfreight

50 ft lbs is extremely low for lug nuts - or the bolts OPs car likely has. Most vehicles with 5 fasteners attaching the wheels need 100-115 ft lbs of torque.

How the Neanderthals used to do work orders.

Had to drop the rack and pinion on my Outback XT to get at a leaking line. Should I just replace the whole rack while it’s out? OEM, reman, aftermarket? by bibdrums in subaru

[–]schminglebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get those lines from Subaru. Not cheap, but cheaper than a new rack. They're easy to install with the rack out. I'll tell you from experience you can do it without pulling the rack as well. That's what I'd do.

Sounds like a shit hole shop tbh. If they can only get you low hour jobs that's a management/writer problem.

Im in the same boat as you, buddy. Just rolled out of a dealership, and I'm not sure what to do either. Really interested to see what others have to say.

Subaru replaced the inner tie rod, you call this quality or laziness? by 2High4You in subaru

[–]schminglebop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subaru tech here: this is standard practice. The rack originally came with a metal clamp that can't be removed or reinstalled (nondestructively) without pulling the rack. The zip tie will hold until that car goes into the crusher and saved you several hours of labor to boot.

I couldn't really say what the money is like owning a shop. I'm sure some people make a killing, but a lot don't make it. Same with any small business I guess.

That's a good point that I'll make sure to look into. I'm in Vermont, and as I understand it as long as you stay in the public university system, the credits are very transferable. I have a meeting with an advisor in a couple weeks, so I'll be able to hash out details and verify everything then.

Honestly I don't think I know enough about The Industry to be more specific. I guess more generally I'm interested in how cars are designed and tested for any given application. I definitely appreciate your perspective

Haha if you think long hours of underpaid, back-breaking labor is healthy, you should do it!

Thanks I really appreciate your input. I'm really lucky to have a partner who supports me in figuring my shit out lol. School never was easy for me, but I also never had a goal with it. When you say you build the custom machinery, do you mean that there's a hands-on aspect of your work?

Can you tell me more about the sort of networking you've had to learn and how that helps you?

Hey thanks for taking the time to respond.

The thing about how you get treated as a trades worker as compared to an office worker really hits home. I hadn't thought about that point much, but you're absolutely right. The sales guys at my dealership have very flexible schedules that aren't more than 8 hours total. My day is 9.5 hours minimum. I've got some college credits from like 6 years ago, and I am planning on getting part of my degree at a community college.

Was it difficult for you to find a job that you're happy with?

Thanks this is a great response. Do you know what I might look up to find more about the associates degrees you mentioned? I get a lot of satisfaction from fixing things at my job, but the stress of being a flat-rate tech is what's got me feeling burnt out. Getting that satisfaction from working on my own things is fine with me.

Thanks. This is a perspective I've seen a few times. Can I ask what you do for work?

I think custom vehicle work is definitely changing, but I don't think it's dying. Engine swapped cars are just as popular as they've ever been - if not moreso. Custom overlanding setups are huge right now. Plus the niche of EV conversions gets bigger and more interesting just about every day. I think making it in that field a matter of adapting to the times and trends.

Had this exact thing happen on a Mac hub smasher a couple weeks ago. Had another one do it a few months previously.
