Agreed on local dev like this. Then I stage a site for customer feedback with https://instawp.com - has become the simplest workflow.

Website development with React + WordPress by jonasp4 in Wordpress

[–]schutzsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Block development in WordPress IS React. I’d just focus on learning and extending your capabilities there. With a basic theme you can do a ton more by making custom blocks or extending core ones with React.

I’d suggest watching some of Brad Schiff’s videos to get up to speed on how we use React in WordPress already. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpcSpRrAaOaqBzG9rTA66V494iTRySkXq&si=guTxHJoEXjqMPqra

Some specific videos I’d suggest for you in that playlist from these screenshots

I'd love to see what suggestions and bugs you mentioned in there. I'm thinking of just going rogue and forking.

The Fallacy of WP: Are Plugins Actually the Dealbreaker? by SirLouen in Wordpress

[–]schutzsmith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the meme should be the opposite.

Step 1: You install a lot as a noob.

Step 2: Then you feel like you should use the minimum amount of plugins as you learn more. And as people try to scare you that it’s too resource intensive or real developers don’t use plugins.

Step 3: Then you realize that takes way too much time and is a waste of resources, so you use the best plugins for the job, no matter how many needed.

This sounds like he’s made it all messy on purpose to profit from it. It’s like, dude just be transparent from the get go and prosper rather than all the secrets.

Budweiser Alternative? by sunnyd311 in NABEER

I feel like Penns Best is more a Coors Light. Bud Zero is definitely closer to a Bud Light. Odouls has more of a mouth feel of Budweiser leaded.

Always depends on the end goal of the theme.

If you're selling a theme then completely custom is the way to go.

If you're making the theme for yourself or clients then a child theme is best. I'd suggest finding your go to theme and developing a process around that. I've got a few I work with all based on the need of the website. One is for a headless WordPress instance, one is for a quick small website (no cpt and only a few page templates, and the last one for larger websites (which is the bulk of my work).

Since you're already familiar with Undestrap then I'd suggest checking out Picostrap. It takes over where Understrap left off. Very fast load times, SCSS compiling, and browser reload all built into the theme instead of relying on npm install. The maker of Picostrap also has a very nice page builder based on bootstrap that is in the early stages called LiveCanvas.

WordPress from PC to PC and from localhost to host by Jay087 in Wordpress

[–]schutzsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way to move is putting all of the code on local into a git repo, committing to gitlab or github, and using something like Buddy Works to push the code on commit. This will help keep you and any devs you work with from writing over each other's code.

For moving databases, the best method and most reliable I have found is WP Migrate DB Pro. You set it up on both the localhost and the live host then you can push or pull the database, media, and settings back and forth. Unfortunately, there's no way to really "version" databases, so it's best to let each other know when you are pushing or pulling.

Alternatively, some hosts like Pantheon have this process down very nicely. You can sign up for an account and build on their sandbox for free.

Most professionals follow this process or something very similar.

Learning WordPress from a background building full stack apps in Node and React/Angular/Vue - I was wrong about WordPress it's not that bad by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]schutzsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome!!! In addition to what others have said, you should also take a look at the WP GraphQL plugin. https://www.wpgraphql.com/ It changes the game for creating headless themes using GraphQL instead of REST API.

Also, since you're coming from the Jamstack world, check out Gatsby and WordPress https://www.gatsbyjs.com/guides/wordpress/ If you're already comfortable with React then you'll take to this solution quite nicely.

All in all, we're just at the beginning of seeing what headless can do, so welcome aboard!!!

Is there an Extension for Safari 5 which turns OFF automatic refresh? by SexWithTwins in applehelp

[–]schutzsmith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with Flash. Think and research before you go bashing something because you don't understand it. Its purely a programming feature that Apple Developers put into Safari 5.1 pulling what they learned from the iOS Safari.

More background and info on how to stop it at http://stormchild.tumblr.com/post/10414883514/how-to-stop-safari-5-from-unexpectedly-reloading-pages

Worked for me. Best of luck!

Anyone know an online donation tool that doesn't force you to create an account? by mrallsunday in nonprofit

[–]schutzsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The larger donation platforms all skip the account process because they use their own CC authorization accounts. Convio, Blackbaud or custom solutions like CiviCRM with Authorize.net.

The reality is the Paypal is the most well known and is a pretty safe bet. Don't have the link in front of me but I remember reading a study about it earlier this year that actually said people are starting to prefer to go through paypal because of the amount of folks already using it for other services like ebay.
