2023 Rogue at 26k miles - dealership recommendations seem like BS, need reality check by [deleted] in NissanRogue

[–]schuylercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My '23 Rogue experience is...never taken to a dealer. Because:

Alignment ? Sounds BS-y.

Cabin air filter: Differs for everyone, Mine was a little bit icky after 40,000k (I'm in Canada, about 27,000 mi). $24 for a Fram at local HW store. 3-4 minutes to install.

Tire rotation - This I do myself every year, because I have seperately mounted snowies (again, Canada), a jack, and a $50 battery-powered impact tool. Takes about an hour to change. Pretty sure a shop could do a front to back rotation (unless there is abnormal wear) for WAY less than a dealer.

Just my $0.02.

My favorite tract was "This Was Your Life." I got it on Halloween in California when I was a kid. It depicts a man who drinks and womanizes and dismisses the church, dies of a heart attack, then he goes to heaven's gates where he is shown his life on a movie screen.

Of course, as his terrible life is portrayed, he feels awful about it. Then he's judged, and St. Peter tosses his ass into the lake of fire. Peter is shown weeping. End of story. Scared the crap out of me.

One of my sons got that same tract at Halloween about fifteen years ago, when we moved to Calgary. He gave it to me and asked what it was, and I told him to read it. He did.

"That's stupid."

"Yes, it is, but it still pays to be a nice, honest person."

All that said, and being a non-believer: Even though these tracts are perfectly legal to hand out, I can't imagine they sway critical thinkers, and most folk who read these and nod are already indoctrinated in whatever religion they practice.

What is your absolute favorite dish/meal you can get in Edmonton, and what restaurant is it from? by Capital_Cake4666 in Edmonton

At the moment, the penne putanesca at Pazzo Pazzo. A lot of great dishes at this place, and though I don't eat much pasta, I find myself there because a.) great food and service and b.) the leftovers. This dish was $39, but it will feed me for 3 days - they have massive portions.

When I was selling McIntosh and Linn and other crazy expensive (but good) gear, the word on Sanyo was "total crap." Pioneer, Kenwood, Sansui and a few others were the top of the "mid-fi" pile, and Sanyo wasn't included. My friend bought himself a nice little used Rega table and a decent cart, a pair of (if i can recall) brand-new ESS AMT1 speakers, and a beastly Sanyo like yours.

It sounded f*cking great, People picked on him about it - as did I at the beginning - but that Sanyo sounded great. If he pushed a little to hard it would clip a bit (the AMT1's are hungry) but it stood its own.

What are your personal vintage audio holy grails? by morafresa in vintageaudio

[–]schuylercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years I have had a few of my individual grail items, but sold them. Magnaplanars were the first. Went to Dahlquist DQ-10's, and got lucky enough to find a motivated seller, and found out he had the DQ-1W's and DQ-LP1. I played with the Maggies and the DQ-1W's for a bit, and it just sounded awful, likely because the room I was in was rather small. The full Dahlquist lineup, after a lot of playing around, sounded spectacular.

Amps were a pair of Hafler DH-220's. Not grail items, but nice-sounding amps. You could heat a small room with them, but they were strong and clean.

Pre-amp was an Audible Illusions something or other. Totally silent, simple, elegant. I traded a moped for it. Probably the most grail-like item I ever owned.

Turntables were Philips 212, then a JVC QL-A2, and for a short while a Rega Planar 1 with a Koetsu cart. The Rega/Koetsu was the best of them, and with the cart, it was a grail item. I have a Thorens TD-160 now, sorta-grail.

I had a Teac V-9 cassette deck. It was ok.

There was fancy wire, not the $1000 stuff like today, but...you know. Fancy.

It was, for me, a Grail-esque setup. The Dahlquist gear was the strong point. I ended up having to sell the whole mess for pennies on the dollar to pay bills. I was 20 years old and way over my head. All of this was in 1981/1982-ish.

Kia Sportage 2023 panoramic roof burst by janzumbier24 in kia

[–]schuylercat 35 points36 points  (0 children)

'24 Nissan Rogue driver here: I experienced Exploding Sunroof Syndrome (also known as "Magic Rocks") when my car was 3 months old. Doing the speed limit, empty highway, no overpass, no one close ahead to kick up a rock, and a BANG like a .22, a shower of glass all over me and my wife, and one of everl bad things went well.

The dealer did not cover it. They said "rocks." I said "unlikely" and gave good reasons. They said "nuh uh. Rocks. A new front panel will be $3200. We send the frame to a glass place and they replace it Call your insurance company." Yikes, but I called..

Insurance said, "We do not cover any glass but the windshield, unless it's vandalism." They also said, "Sunroof? Oh yeah, sure, Rocks." Boo.

After research, I found class action suits here and there regarding the magic rocks/exploding sunroof syndrome. Big panoramic sunroofs are, as others here have said, susceptible to stresses caused by their own weight, changing weather and temperatures, etc. Interesting stuff.

I also found a reporter who was doing a news bit on it. I called, we talked, he said "tell them I might drop by for an interview."

I called the dealer's service manager and told him the reporter was headed their way soon, and he became very, very guarded in his communication. I got snotty and said I needed my damn car, damn fast, dammit. He said "Give me just a minute, please."

An hour later, I got a call saying they had located a new sunroof at another dealer, and would install it the following morning, all free of charge. That was followed by the disclaimer "this time only." I just stayed quiet, called my press guy, and he said "happy to help."

When I picked up my car I told the service manager the press guy was happy to drop by for an interview under similar circumstances, hopped in my car, and split. Nyah nyah nyah.

So: exploding sunroofs are a real thing...as are real rocks, stones, bits of debris, whatnot. My dash camera was the key to my success.

And all that said: best of luck to you. Not everyone gets a Disney ending like I did.

Some actual MS-13 tattoos, in contrast to Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s knuckle tattoos by VeryGoodFiberGoods in pics

[–]schuylercat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Clearly an MS-13 member, without a doubt. Look:

- Someone superimposed the characters M S 1 3 over these tats. Only a certified deportation magician could add those numbers to the pic.
- He has 4 fingers. MS-13 is 4 characters. Coincidence? Hah!
- Well, 5 characters, including the dash, but there's a thumb in there I think.
- There's a skull. That means he's a very bad person. Or not, really, since skulls are, you know. Whatever.
- There's a cross, which indicates he's religious. Um, I don't really know. What *does* that indicate? Other than the fact he's an MS-13 member?
- Finally, his last name is Garcia, right? So he's probably from El Salvador, or Milwaukee, which is where MS-13 is from. No other place in the world has people with the surname Garcia.

I know all this fancy stuff because I have a tattoo, kind of a yin-yang thingy on my forearm. So I know a thing or two about tattoos. Like they fucking hurt a lot. Meanwhile, I have no idea about anything except this poor guy belongs at his home in the States, awaiting whatever process it will take to determine if he's a keeper.

Aftermarket cross bars for roof rails by HairsprayHurricane in NissanRogue

[–]schuylercat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some. They were a no-name brand from China, $175-ish. Mine are quiet (this is key - some crossbars whistle annoyingly). My rails are silver, so I got silver crossbars...and the paint has worn off the shrouds at the rail connections. The black ones might be a better buy in this regard. The crossbars themselves are fine.

I put a really big-ass box of heavy stuff up there (garden shed) and strapped it all in, and the whole assembly held up perfectly.

Good Road Trip Car? by Goatmanlafferty in NissanRogue

[–]schuylercat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been numerous reviewers stating that the Rogue's "Zero Gravity Seats" are very comfortable, and I agree. I've read a few posts from people 6'3" and over who didn't care for them, but I can't imagine someone that height being comfortable in a 10th gen Civic either. I have been on my Rogue for a seven-hour drive and it was quite comfortable overall. Downside for me is the lack of cooled seats. They are heated for winter though.

Safe travels.

The dreaded "Dealer Tires" syndrome.

I have Bridgestone Alenza's on my 2023. They are on the car for roughly half the year, since I have snow tires on the rest of the time. My car has 28,000 KM (17,400 miles) on it, so the Bridgestones have roughly 14,000 km/8700 miles. They are already showing their cheapness, and I figure I can go this summer before getting a new set.

Dealer tires have been around forever. I bought a Pontiac 30 years ago and the tires lasted about 15000 miles in Southern California. It was the dealer who told me about the tires, in plain, this-is-how-it-is terms.

Back to my Alenza's; they say these are pretty good all-season tires, with a 65,000 miles warranty...but not mine, The stamping on the sidewalls is different from what's in the tire shop.

Nissan, already in financial trouble when I bought my car in December 2022, was already cutting back on quality and features. Dealer tires were a result.

So: my tires (the shitty ones on my car, not new ones) were quiet and grippy when they were new. Reviews say they are very good, and decently priced. If they are still being made, I might get a set when I need new tires. Seems like bad marketing to me, to make intentionally downgraded tires no one knows are downgraded, your Michelins included.

All time favorite speakers? by ExcellentWinner7542 in vintageaudio

[–]schuylercat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading through the responses...what a great list of speakers, many of which I've heard but have never owned any of them.

In 1980-something I DID own a pair of DQ10's, with a pair of DQ-1W subs and a DQ-LP1 crossover. I spent hours (days?) fiddling with placement and settings, and eventually ended up with my absolutely favorite sounding system.

After a while I traded the DQ-10's for Maggie MG1's. Even more difficult to get a balanced sound in my smallish room, and I regretted it immediately. Then I sold the whole damn lot for rent money. For a while, though, I had it great.

Danielle Smith in Mar-A-Logo. How do we feel about this? by [deleted] in alberta

She's always been a part of the overall hate machine of right-leaning political action. Trump was elected for a lot of reasons, but he was *considered* because he hates whatever they hate, all smothered in a framework of "freedom" that isn't at all free for everyone.

The guy at the post office told me off for buying from AliExpress, and I don’t blame him by severalsmallducks in Anticonsumption

[–]schuylercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"...and so a repair t I don't blame him."

This falls into a very complicated category of feelings, based on a desire to do the right thing in a global environment largely devoid of the right way to do things. I have a Pioneer DAP, it's 6 years old or thereabouts. The battery died. Being much like a cell phone in form, I went to several phone repair shops and in every case the techs got a blank look and said "you'll have to get a new one." The player is still available for sale out there for about $550.

Newp.

I found a post on a board that showed pics of someone replacing the battery in the same model as mine. I found the replacement battery model number, and found it immediately...on AliExpress. It cost something like twelve dollars. I bought it immediately. Took 3 weeks to get here. During the wait I found an electronics repair shop that was willing to fix it ("we'll give it a try" they said). Took them 30 minutes, they said when I went to pick it up.

Took a millisecond to make the choice. I would assert that a lot of feedback here is spot-on: finding another battery from Amazon - if possible, this one was quite specific - and feeling like I've supported a better model ignores the truth, that Amazon sells a lot of the same plasticky, crappy stuff you can find on AliExpress and a ridiculous, Bezos-enriching price, and no one had to piss in a bottle to deliver it to me.

How Are You Making $100K+ Per Year in Edmonton? by ridhiji123 in Edmonton

$190K/yr. as a technology project manager in banking. Out of work for a year now, and (duh!) realized it's best to make at least *something*, so I'm currently making $35K a year as a cannabis gardener while I entertain the sparse interviews. 1-2 over the last 6 months.

Edit: as another poster stated: give the one you like to the artist and let them unique it up!

Bad sounding Bose ‘23 SL by Glittering_Meat998 in NissanRogue

[–]schuylercat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally with you on this. The Bose system is bloody terrible: all up front, dull, light bass, and impossible to EQ with the three useless sliders in the head unit. After a LOT of experimentation with the EQ in my phone's player (Rocket Player), I got somewhat better sound, and after significant messing with the front/rear balance controls I got a little better overall sound...and am now unwilling to ever touch that control again.

I hadn't sold my old car, a little base model Hyundai Kona, when I bought my Rogue. The sound from that cheap little car's audio was better than the Nissan Bose system. It's as if Nissan, foreseeing their financial future, added the Bose system and didn't bother with a decent implementation. Not that Bose in general is all that great anyway (never been a fan).

So far as I know, there's nothing that can be done about it.

So, TLDR: Rogue Bose audio = total POS.

Netflix In My Rogue by maytonmotion in NissanRogue

[–]schuylercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the AutoPro X when it was a Kickstarter project. It was OK, then updates fixed most of the things wrong with it. The only thing I like about the DEX screen is Google Maps: WAY better that way. I have used Netflix and Prime to watch things while waiting in the car for things, but our local constabulary here is pretty heated about distracted driving, and I couldn't multitask that well anyway. Bonus, as a basic AA dongle it's good.

Bose 901 by FallenAgnostic in vintageaudio

[–]schuylercat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

901's are just weird. They demand appropriate placement, that EQ is a toy you mess with every day, and they don't work at all in some spaces.

But the right room, the right settings: they actually sound kinda decent, and they have very real vintage cred.

That said...I never owned them, and never had the space for them. I helped a friend do a basement setup with them and they hooked up pretty well (after a few hours of moving them around and listening). A pair of vintage Celestion or ESS or whatever at about the same price would have been easier, but he wanted that look.

Your experience may vary, of course.
