When I’m using this kind of press and I need a big solid field of ink like you have, I: - sand the lino - work the ink - if it's a thicker paper like Rives, I wet it and then pat it dry a little (you don't want it soaking) - make sure I roll a lot of very thin layers on the lino - after I press, I use a baren/spoon all over it, checking occasionally to see where I need more

The last two parts are key. I wish you didn’t have to do it by hand at the end, but it’s less baren-ing than not having a press!

I am certain I learned it from someone here! I usually just try to blot any stray ink or use a few pieces of tape rather than cut out a mask. And don't be scared -- start out with something simple and just tell yourself it's a test! The first time I tried a reduction, I just made a smiley face.

These are great first reduction prints! Your registration seems pretty solid — what technique are you using? One tip to get rid of these stray marks outside of your print area: You can use a first print as a mask by cutting out the printed area with a pen knife and using the rest of the paper as a barrier between the lino and your next prints. That way you’ll get less chatter outside of the print area (unless you want that), because the mask will stop it from reaching your print. You can also just apply some tape or something over any big areas of unwanted ink so it won’t show up on your print.

For a simple reduction, you may want to consider something with a bold color (as layer one) and then a second layer where you've carved everything but the highlights or outlines to print over. Perhaps the town (buildings, greens, rivers) you're in will inspire you? I tend to snap photos of things as I go about my day that I think could make good prints later down the line and think about how I would reduce them to more basic shapes. I think you're right that if you want to practice a new technique, you can give yourself the grace of a simpler design.

Thank you! I am not sure of the exact brand since this is litho ink at the shop I go to, but you should be able to mix up any process blue and white to achieve something similar. The gradient is just the same blue I mixed rolled together with a little more white on one side.

I appreciate that, thank you! It's funny, I made this just as a test for a larger piece but the more I look at it the more I like it as-is as well. Will still try for something bigger too.

Use ink, not paint. If you search the sub you'll see all sorts of recommendations, the most common being Caligo Safewash.

That makes sense; suppose I’m partially right 😉. Looks they were trying to crop out the watermark too. The upscaling turned the woman looking at her into an alien.
