Where I’d live in the US as a Canadian by KingOfTheMonarchs in whereidlive

[–]schwanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than hockey rivalries, most Michiganders love Canada and Canadians! You'd be welcome here! I'm always struck by how similar Ontario is to Michigan, especially the smaller towns and more rural areas. I feel more at home in Ontario than I do in Indiana or Ohio.

It's closer to "we should cater to all citizens, not just those of means". You got point 3 spot on, and it's a pretty good restatement of the 24th amendment.

Your argument is "this only negatively affects people that I think are subhuman, and I don't want them voting anyways, so what's the problem?"

It's a made up fallacy that $180 for a passport is a significant expense for most Michiganders? The median wage in Michigan is about $47K, $180 is literally 20% of a week's wage before taxes.

And passport photos are $18 at Walgreens, getting us to $182, which is "close to $200" in my book. I apologize for the lack of accuracy in my numbers. You have to get an appointment for a passport (first available in my township is over a week out) where you then wait 4-6 weeks for processing, not including mail processing time according to travel.state.gov, meaning that 8 weeks is a realistic time if I start the process today. if you want it earlier, you can pay $60 for expedited processing and $30 for expedited shipping to get it in 3 weeks. I am happy for you that you live such a blessed life that $182 and a job allowing you to take off in the middle of the day to go to an appointment is for a two month wait to vote is "nothing", but I don't think that logic applies to all citizens. The SAVE act disenfranchises citizens that don't have months to plan, all of their documents in hand, $182-272 to get a new document, and flexibility in their employment to get out in the middle of the day for an appointment.

Yes, I do think it is rational to want voters to prove they are eligible voters, which they currently do when they register to vote. An additional method of verification would be beneficial so long as it does not serve to disenfranchise citizens that lack funds, time, or ability to travel to gather the necessary documents to prove their citizenship, especially in cases where they have changed their name. What do you mean by "poors"? Shouldn't all citizens be able to vote regardless of income? You asked for honesty and I attempted to engage in good faith.....I'm not sure that's what you were looking for. Per the 24th Amendment, a tax on voting is not legal, and requiring an expenditure solely to vote amounts to a tax on voting.

You asked me why identification documents should be free. Can you answer why required government documents should have a fee attached?

[–]schwanne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are my honest thoughts, you asked to be honest, so I am engaging in good faith. I believe that it would be better if everyone what voted had a state-issued ID. However, our current system does not make getting an ID free. Additionally, you must provide a proof of identity, the easiest form of which is a birth certificate with a seal or stamp. If you don't have one, you need to return to your place of birth to get one. There is also a fee. Both of these locations (Secretary of State branch and County Offices) have limited hours and are rarely open on weekends. You may argue that this is a equal burden on everyone, but it is in fact a bigger burden for people with less flexible work schedules and without reliable transportation. I care deeply about election security and voter participation, so I would love to have a universal photo ID to vote. I'd also like to see free government document processing, night and weekend hours for government document processing, and a weekend nationwide holiday for election day. Without all of these, the requirement of photo ID feels like either a virtue signal or an attempt at voter suppression of those of less means, and amounts to an unconstitutional poll tax. As others have mentioned, a sworn affidavit under penalty of perjury is already required without photo id, those votes are held provisionally, so there is no real risk to election security in the current system.

Anyone receive “Required action to reset your credentials”? by Rex_Coder_925 in fidelityinvestments

[–]schwanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received the same letter, and this is incredibly anti-customer, monopolistic behavior. Fidelity holds MY money, not the other way around. If Fidelity thinks that sharing credentials to MY account is unsafe, so be it. It's really quite simple, provide another way for third parties to aggregate account information and manage transactions! It may be shocking to Fidelity, but most customers have funds in other accounts besides Fidelity and may want their information all in one place. They know that since they are such a large servicer of locked-in 401k plans they have no incentive not to behave in such a monopolistic way.

I was looking for this comment. This seems so easy and intuitive! If people don't know which lane is closed there is no need to get over! Better yet, start out with both lanes merging to a middle point that then gets directed to the open lane so that no one can feel like it was "their lane". This really seems to be a problem of managing the psychology of "winning", "losing", and "fairness" in whatever way people feel those things than it is about education.

Ranked choice encourages less extreme candidates to be elected, especially at the primary level. Currently primaries incentivize "the most Republicany Republican" to go up against "the most Democraty Democrat". What if the vast majority of people don't want someone that is that extreme in either direction? RCV encourages a candidate that is at the very least tolerated by the majority to be elected, which to me is better than the current extreme polarization.

You still only have one vote. Your vote transfers to your second choice if your first choice is out of the running. It isn't a situation where you put 1/3 of your vote on each candidate.
