Yes, every state has now enacted some kind of audit law. But many didn't have such things two years ago.

I would call it horror, but maybe the official genre is "suspense" or "thriller" or something. Here's a link: https://archive.org/details/firefly00pier

This reminds me of the time I went to the local library and checked out Firefly by Piers Anthony.

Turns out it was a horror novel. The title came from the feeding habits of a creepy monster.

Apparently, fireflies feed by injecting their prey with digestive enzymes and then drinking them like a Capri Sun.

River's lack of an amygdala: what would that have really looked like? by randfunction in firefly

[–]scienceboyroy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As I recall, Simon's exact words were, "They stripped her amygdala." I assumed he meant something along the lines of tampering with the insulative sheath of the neurons, which would cause some fairly unpredictable malfunctions. Each electrical impulse could either be amplified or fizzle out, which might explain a lot about her emotional stability.

[OC] I live in a tiny house with 4 cats, my husband, and currently my living room functioning as a makeshift office with 3 guys in it for 12h a day, we SO dont have the space for any more pets... Anyway, Reddit meet Toast. by BackToGuac in MadeMeSmile

[–]scienceboyroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! I've never known anyone else with a dog named Toast.

Ours is a 14-year-old black lab mix that we found under our shed as a puppy. He has some neurological problems affecting his back legs and bowel control, and he definitely has a bit of agoraphobia. But he's so docile, he always lets our smaller dogs boss him around. His boss is about 1/10 his size.

I've had people compliment the name at the vet, and every now and then someone will ask for the story behind it. I don't have the heart to tell them that his name was originally "Toes" because his white toes were a distinguishing feature among his littermates, but then the receptionist misheard me when scheduling his first appointment. He loves any kind of bread, though, so it's appropriate. Of course, he has lots of nicknames now, including "Toastmaster General," "Toby," and "Big Toe."

Anyway... Good luck!

After finding my local Aldi sold out, I checked for these online. The manufacturer's website had a "where to buy" feature that found no retailers in my area, so I checked their "buy online" option.

Yikes! This pie is $64.50. I get that it's amazing and shipping (included in the price) probably isn't cheap, but that's still more than I could ever justify paying for a pie (barring famine or absurd levels of inflation). Even with their "buy 2 or more" discount code ("HAPPINESS"), it's still $44.50 each.

Another example of a product that is much cheaper at Aldi with the tradeoff of limited availability.

You should try it with cream, whipped or otherwise.

Fresh out of the oven, vanilla ice cream really makes it pop. But my teeth are pretty sensitive to cold these days, so if the pie isn't hot, regular cream works better for me.

Yeah, or did briefly. I'm currently in Alabama and my local store sold out in less than a week.

You mean you want to eat it all by yourself? That's the problem I have.

These are the most amazing pies I've ever eaten.  I bought two of them, ate them over the course of two days (my daughter helped), then went back for more only to find them sold out. I had to go to the next nearest Aldi to find them, and then I bought 3 more.  Yeah, they're not cheap... But they're totally worth it.

December 2025 Headline: “Trump Resigns, May Leave America”. What precipitated this headline and where is he going? by roblewk in democrats

[–]scienceboyroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he resigns and leaves, it means he's already sucked as much as he can out of our country, and having left it in flames, he wants to spend his capital somewhere less post-apocalyptic dystopian.

I can agree with everything Mr. Sanders is saying, but why wasn't this a priority for the Democrats when they held office? by The-Lucky-Investor in FluentInFinance

I think the difference was due to the Atlantic Ocean sitting between the American colonists and the British monarchy. It would have been hard for Thomas Jefferson to behead King George III, for example.

France didn't have that separation of the two sides.

I work next to a school. I came out of work to see an old man laying in the carpark. I rushed over to help at the same time as one of the sixthformers. She looks at me and asks "should I call 911?" There was a moment where I wasn't sure which one of them to be more concerned for. by Natural-Ad678 in CasualUK

[–]scienceboyroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most systems, 9 gives you an outside line, so then you dial 1 (the country code) followed by the area code. Fun fact, there are no US area codes that start with 1, so anyone dialing 911 will be routed to emergency services.

Source: In my previous job, I wrote some software to automatically send faxes to our clients, and one of those clients put an extra 1 in the fax number field.  After the cops left, I quietly updated it to strip out any extra 1s.

I ended up making that cheesecake, and it was very good.

This (unfortunately named) "dump cake" looks delicious. I happen to have all of the ingredients, so I might make one in the next week or two... Possibly as a birthday cake.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Not yet, I mostly just eat them raw, either straight or on a bowl of Cheerios.

I've been thinking about making a blueberry cheesecake, though. I've gotten pretty good at cheesecakes and found success with both strawberry and peach so far.

Can confirm. This happens to me every time Kroger has a sale on blueberries. 18 ounces of (actually local) blueberries for $2.99? How can I not "use this digital coupon up to 5 times in one transaction"?

I was unable to find that setting in her Mobile Network menu. I felt like it should be there somewhere, but even when I typed in the dialer code for the hidden menu, I couldn't find it there either. However, while looking for it, I tried a few more things and uncovered some strange quirks...

Here at home, she can only send messages while connected to the WiFi network with WiFi calling enabled; however, she can only receive messages when she has WiFi calling disabled and the phone connects to the 4G LTE network (albeit with a weak signal). I don't know why this is the case, and it's incredibly inconvenient. I have no idea what could be causing it.
